PORTSMOUTH TRIATHLON31ST AUGUST 2014 - CASTLE FIELD. PORTSMOUTH. PO5 3PA

Welcome to the second Wiggle Portsmouth triathlon - a partnership event by Wiggle, Portsmouth City Council and Triathlon England. With a spectacular course starting at Southsea Castle taking in the Solent, Historic Dockyard and HM Naval base this will be another exciting and iconic triathlon event.

The cycling route is on fully closed roads through the city. The Olympic and relay races will take in historic landmarks such as HMS Victory through to the Spinnaker Tower, before entering the HM Naval base - an area not normally open to the public - and heading back for five loops of the seafront.

Transition, registration and the race village will all be located on Castle Field (PO5 3PA) in front of Henry VIII’s historic Southsea Castle.

REGISTRATION:

Registration will open on Saturday 30th August from 2pm - 6pm with secure overnight racking. There will be NO registration on Sunday in order to minimise the volume of traffic crossing the race route.

Please bring along photo ID or, if applicable, your British Triathlon membership card. If you have entered as a British Triathlon member but do not have your BT licence on the day of the race, you must pay an additional £5 at the Wiggle trailer for a race day licence before you will be able to register. No ID, no race.

Race numbers and timing chips will be collected from the registration desk on race day. You will be handed your race pack containing: chip timing anklet, 2 race numbers, three labels (one for your bike, helmet and any left luggage) and a swim hat.

Please attach the timing transponder firmly to your left ankle with the strap provided. This will ensure that all finish results (as well as splits and lap times) are collected by the system. Timing chips will be collected in the finish funnel immediately at the end of the race.

Please attach the labels in the correct place i.e. bike label around the cables at the front of your bike, helmet label on the front of your helmet and luggage label on any bagged items which can be left at the registration marquee.

Safety pins and pens will be available in the registration marquee and in transition. Details of allocated bib numbers will be displayed in the information area at the venue.

PORTSMOUTH TRIATHLON31ST AUGUST 2014 - CASTLE FIELD. PORTSMOUTH. PO5 3PA

Please complete the medical form on the back of your race numbers which can be pinned to your top (front and back), or you can use just one number on a race belt (which we recommend!) but remember to have it in front of you on the run so the commentator can identify you when you approach the finish line.

If you use only one of the race numbers on a race belt, please remember to put your spare race number somewhere secure or hand it back to the registration team to dispose of. This, together with your numbered chip timing anklet is your ‘passport’ into transition and to collect any left luggage.

Race briefings will be available on You Tube in advance of the event - check our website for further information in early 2014. Briefings will also be available at registration and on race day before your swim.

RELAY TEAMS:

Each member of the relay team completes one of the disciplines in the triathlon. At registration you will be given one ankle band which the swimmer will wear first and then pass onto the cyclist in the relay team transition area (within transition). The cyclist will hand over the ankle band to the runner when they have racked their bike. Further details will be in the race briefing.

ELECTRONIC TIMING BY DB MAX MULTI SPORT EVENTS & PRECISION TIMING

Providing fast and accurate results is a critical part of the race. each athlete is given a timing chip. These triathlon chips are re-usable and need to be handed back at the finish of the race. You will incur a charge of £50 if you fail to hand it in at the end of the race. Individual results will be available on a print out on the day and provisional results list from the event website by end of day with final results in the following week.

TRANSITION:

The transition area will be on Castle Field. The transition area will have 2.5m high fencing and be patrolled by security at all times during the day and night.

To get into or out of the transition area you must show your race number at ALL times. you will also be asked to show both your race number & bike number when taking your bike out. This is for your security. Racking will be numbered and marshals will direct you to your racking location.

Please ensure you arrive at least 60 minutes before your wave start time to set out your transition area and get to the swim start area.

SWIM:

The swim course is one 1500m anti-clockwise lap for the Olympic and relay races from Southsea beach. For the sprint distance, the course is one 750m lap. You will be given a race briefing before your swim wave start. Olympic and relay races will take place every eight minutes between 7am - 9am and sprint races from 9am to 10.30am. Your wave time will be sent to you in the week before the event. Waves will be arranged in age groups for each gender.

The swim start will be in waist deep water. If you are a fast swimmer keep to the front, but if you are a slower swimmer keep to the back to avoid being swum over. Keep the buoys on your left as you swim round the course. The swim exit will be clearly marked by a banner. You will run along the promenade into transition on Castle Field. There will be rubber matting to protect your feet from the shingle beach at the exit, but we recommend you bring flipflops or surf shoes to get to the swim start. Write your bib number on your shoes with a permanent marker and place them in the crate at the swim start. These will be available to collect from transition - just look out for the crate with your wave number on it.

PORTSMOUTH TRIATHLON31ST AUGUST 2014 - CASTLE FIELD. PORTSMOUTH. PO5 3PA

BIKE:

An approved cycle helmet must be worn for the cycle section. This is a non-drafting race. Drafting is cycling closer than two bike lengths behind another cyclist to gain an advantage from wind protection. Please obey the rules of the road and keep to the left, unless race signage indicates otherwise. Please attach your bib number to your front while racing so it can be clearly seen when you cross the finish line. Race belts may also be used and will be available to purchase on the day. Bib numbers cannot be folded. Competitors may not race with somebody else’s number.

Competitors are responsible for counting their own bike laps – plan how to do this to avoid mistakes on the day. The timing system will produce results for each lap and anyone not completing the required number of laps will be disqualified.

RUN:

Finally, the run is on a 5km loop to Old Portsmouth and back. Two laps for the Olympic distance. The route will feature a water and feed station every 2.5k. Your race number must be clearly visible at all times. The finish is in Castle Field where you will be awarded with your medal and goodie bag!

PRIZE GIVING:

There will be a presentation of trophies for overall winners. Details of prizes for Sprint, Olympic distance and relay teams will be available nearer to the event. These will be presented by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth at approximately 12.45pm for the sprint, relay and Olympic distance races.

RACE VILLAGE FACILITIES:

There are toilets near registration and transition in Castle Fields. We are pleased to have a range of catering options available including Coffee Cup and other catering.

For all your last minute purchases Wiggle’s super trailer will be available selling goggles through to bikes, all at 10% off website prices!

A bike mechanic will be available for any last minute issues with gears, brakes or general safety requirements before you enter transition. Please note that they will only be able to tighten or tweak to make your cycle safe, they will not be able to do any major repairs on the day or assist with any mechanical issues which arise once you are out on the bike course. If you get a puncture while on the course, you are responsible for repairing it yourself.

There will be fun for all the family at the race village, including face painting and an expo village! Triathlon England will be available to answer all your race queries and general triathlon questions.
