Greetings and welcome to British Co-lumbia’s 2019 Fairs and Exhibitions!

The province’s fairs and exhibition season is a wonderful time of year, to bring friends and families together, share new experiences and shine a bright light on those who are involved in producing B.C. foods.

From May to the end of September, fairs and exhibitions are scheduled all over the prov-ince to give visitors an up-close look at B.C.’s agriculture, and all the different aspects of it. It’s an opportunity for the community to connect with local farmers and food produc-ers and learn more about the people behind #BuyBC products.

I am so proud to be a part of such a unique

and diverse industry. From 4-H and livestock and horse shows, to homemade goodies made with local ingredients and amazing locally grown flowers and produce, each exhibit has something special to offer guests of all ages!

Thank you to all the volunteers, organizers and participants who help make B.C.’s Fairs and Exhibition season such a success, con-gratulations!

Join us Aug 17-Sep 2 for the best part of summer!

As another season of agricultural fairs and exhibitions begins, our association is proud to recognize

several fairs that will celebrate milestone years in 2019, as well as continue our work within the agricultural community to create lasting and positive connections.

Our members are certainly resilient in these changing times, and have faced unexpected challenges. Kudos to the Lakes District Fall Fair in Burns Lake; in 2018 the fire situa-tion caused them to cancel their event, so instead of marking their 75th anniversary

last year, they will celebrate it this year. The Bulkley Valley Exhibition endured last year’s environmental haze in the northern region of our province, and this year will celebrate 100 years. One of our smaller fairs, the Peachland Fall Fair in the Okanagan, also marks its centennial this year, and one of our bigger members, the Vancouver Island Exhibition in Nanaimo, turns 125.

But no matter the size, the dozens of fairs and exhibitions across British Columbia would not be possible without the planning, management, and creativity of their boards of directors and the hundreds of volunteers and community groups that help out, as well as the hard-working staff, and the enthusiastic participation of agricultural associations, sponsors, vendors, and more.

Every fair contributes to the economic health and vibrant spirit of their respective communities, and the history, traditions, education, and overall goodwill that each of these fairs provide is incredible. As you look through the 2019 BC Guide to BC’s Fairs & Exhibitions and are planning on which ones to attend, take the time to think about the rich history that many of them have.

This year our association, BC Fairs & Exhibi-tions, itself is 109-years-old. For more than a century we have been sowing the seeds, literally and figuratively, of agriculture and the critical role it plays in our province. Visit your fair or exhibition this year and join us in giving some appreciation for ev-eryone who makes these events possible!

4-H 4 Futures4-H is an agriculture- based youth pro-

gram that inspires, educates and devel-ops youth into empowered community

leaders. We are commonly known as ‘that’ cow program! Although we love cows, we offer so many other programs and oppor-tunities that help shape our members into caring individuals who contribute to positive change in the world around them.

4-H’s Cloverbud project is for youth from 6-8 years old. Cloverbuds offers members an overview of what 4-H involves and what they can expect to do in future years as part of the 4-H program. After Cloverbuds, youth 9-19 years old are eligible to choose from the 28 other projects that 4-H offers. Projects fall under the four pillars of: Community Engagement & Communications, Science & Technology, Environment & Healthy Living and Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security. Through their project work members learn life skills such as record keeping, budgeting,

judging, communications and leadership.

4-H also offers provincial and national programs for senior members, 13-19 years old. Programs cover areas like personal growth, current ag-riculture markets, public speaking, careers in agriculture and how to represent 4-H in the public. Travelling is often a compo-nent with programs, enforcing the growth of youth into empowered community leaders, through independent travel and meeting and effectively collaborating with new people in team environments.

4-H offers a large variety of scholarships provided by our proud supporters and partners. Investing in the youth of today provides security for our leaders of tomor-row. 4-H also offers Ministry of Education authorized senior secondary external credit

courses. The 4-H courses can only be earned through membership and completion of requirements in the 4-H program.

Parents and volunteers have an important role to play in 4-H as well! Volunteer Leaders are needed to help run clubs and projects within each club. 4-H clubs are a fun and exciting environment where contributing to future leaders of your community is a rewarding experience. We also welcome parents and adult volunteers on our pro-grams as chaperones, so you can enjoy the great experiences that our members are privileged to.

The highlight in the 4-H year is when mem-bers showcase their project at Achievement Day. Some clubs choose their local agricul-tural fair for this. Thanks to BC Fairs, 4-H members all over the province, have the opportunity to participate and demonstrate their skills learned throughout the year as well as be ambassadors for agriculture awareness and promotion. 4-H members are always happy to show and tell you more about their project, so stop by and say Hi!

If you are interested in joining 4-H, please call our provincial office at 1 866 776 0373 or visit 4hbc.ca. We Look 4-ward to seeing you soon!

There is a long tradition in the BC Fairs community of celebrating everything about, agriculture while providing fun

and entertaining education annually through events and exhibitions. Many fairs have had a presence for dozens of years, established long ago by volunteers, farmers, and producers looking for a way to come together.

Several of these events are marking milestone anniversaries in 2019, recognizing their own colourful histories and inviting the public to come and celebrate too. The traditions, education, and overall goodwill that each of these fairs provides is a reflection of many of the great things the agricultural sector does in our province.

Heavy Horse Pull at the Lakes District Fall Fair

And speaking of good things…in 2018 the Lakes District Fall Fair in Burns Lake stepped up in a major way as the region was blanketed by forest fires and the fairgrounds were used not for an annual exhibition, but to house more than 400 livestock and numerous evac-uated families. The fair itself was 75 years-old-last year but was cancelled as for five weeks, the grounds were a temporary home peppered with tents and campers. The anni-versary was recognized last July when the RCMP Musical Ride came to Burns Lake, but this year the Lakes District event is having its “new” 75th.

While the celebration will be a bit subtle with a cake and balloons, scrapbooks detailing the fair’s history will be on display, and as they do every year, a music festival is held during the fair with support from local arts groups who also tell the story of the fair through cultural performances. Cleanup of the fairgrounds has been a long process since it sheltered the community, but it will be spruced up by Sep-tember for the “new” diamond anniversary.

Abundance of exhibits entered at the Peachland Fall Fair

Two fairs are holding their centennial events in 2019. The Peachland Fall Fair celebrates pride in its past, and faith in its future, hav-ing held its first event in 1919; thanks to the many dedicated community volunteers and sponsors over the years, it’s now 100-years-old. Nestled in the picturesque Okanagan Valley with the atmosphere and content of an old-fashioned country fair, the fair is held each September right in the heart of beautiful downtown Peachland. There are opportunities to bake or preserve something, plant some seeds to nurture, crochet or knit, quilt, carve or build, and take photographs. Whether you sew it, grow it, bake it or make it, Peachland wants to celebrate it, noting that its mission is to encourage an awareness to local agriculture by holding the annual fair.

Saddle Bronc at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition

The other centenary this year is in Smithers at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition, held each August. With a rodeo, midway, and lots of entertainment planned, the 100th anniversary is sure to be great. The Canine Stars Stunt Dog Show is a highlight, alongside a variety of headliners (each evening has a theme, such as Throwback Thursday, this year with an ABBA tribute), Shooting Star Amusements, and the rodeo which this year expands from three days to four. Different divisions will be

showing the 100-year history, and the kick-off evening parade is expected to be bigger than previous years. The exhibition’s moniker this year is “into the future, back to our roots”, with strong community support across the region as the single biggest event in the valley.

Vancouver Island Exhibition Agriculture Building (1911)

And rounding out the anniversaries this season is the Vancouver Island Exhibition held in Nanaimo each August, with 125 years under its belt. This year the exhibition wel-comes back West Coast Amusements with several new midway rides, fitting for one of its objectives to “amuse and amaze”, as well as The Laughing Logger, Global FMX moto-cross, and gold panning with Yukon Dan. The other objectives? To promote agricultural awareness, to educate and encourage, and to support local communities. The VIEx has been instrumental in advancing the public’s knowledge about agriculture while show-casing local farmers and 4-H clubs, and just about everyone of any age can participate in the event by entering a display – from artwork to jam to zucchinis – and showing off various skills and talents. Back in Octo-ber, 1894 at the very first event, the bulk of the displays were in horticultural. If you had the best plums, the prize was a box of cigars. Times have changed, but like all fairs and exhibitions across the province, the VIEx has grown and thrived for more than a century thanks to hard-working volunteers, sponsors, and many other supporters.

BC Fairs passes on our Congratulations to these milestone fairs! Be sure to celebrate the history of those who gave their time, ex-pertise, and often their own land to establish these agricultural fairs and societies so many years ago, and cheers to those who have kept them going all these years.

2019 Milestone Celebrations!
