In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge

forms and conventions of real media products?

Page 2: Evaluation-Question 1

Firstly, each one of my products of the front cover, contents page and the double page spread have used, developed and challenged conventions of real media products. My front cover consisted of a large masthead above the main image (which dominates the page). This is written in a large red font; the colour red is repeated throughout the whole page. As well as the red, there is a black shadow around the text; this creates the illusion that the title is even bigger and bolder than it already is, making it the most noticeable text upon the page.

Along the sides of the page, the coverlines are positioned; each coverline is written in white with the smaller text informing more information is again in red. This too makes the text stand out against the main image-the additional shadow has the same effect.

At the bottom of the page there is the strapline alongside the barcode; this gives additional information to the reader.

Also, the colour scheme is consistent throughout each product; this represents my genre of music as well as presenting the most popular colours chosen by others when I asked for feedback on music magazines in the form of a magazine.

In the right hand corner of the page, I have inserted a red and white puff; this gave the audience even more information about the content of the magazine. This puff includes a well-known popular indie band; this will attract the specific target audience towards the magazine. Likewise, the positioning statement is located just under the masthead, which also links with the name of the magazine.

Additionally, the contents page consists of many images as well as text for each story. These images demonstrate what is yet to come within the magazine as well as fulfilling requests of many images upon the page selected by my questionnaire participants; the contents page carries out the continuity of the black, red and white colour scheme.

Down the right hand side of the page, I have included the features of the magazine; these are written in white to contrast against the black background.

Many responses from the questionnaire agreed for the page to include an editor’s letter, to carry this out I included a small letter in red near the bottom of the page. At the bottom of the page, I have demonstrated the subscription box; this demonstrates how the audience can purchase an annual amount of magazines for a cheaper amount than usual.

Furthermore, the double page spread consists of common conventions of real media products such as one large image across the two pages with the text of the article across the bottom of the two pages in four simple columns. These columns are perfectly aligned and adjusted to look like the real magazines.

In addition, I included a simple colour scheme of grey and a large drop capital at the start of the article to indicate where the reader should begin.

The simple colour scheme of black and white (grey) illustrates the simplicity of the artist as well as drawing attention to the audience as these are the pages with no colour. I have chosen this as Adam Davies does not want the focus on how he appears, but on his music instead. Down the side of the page, I have verified who has written the article as well as taken the image by using a by-line next to the image of Adam.

Moreover, the title of the article is the largest text upon the page; this will be the first thing (after the image) that the audience will notice. The stand first is located underneath the title of the article and is written in white; this is the only white writing on the whole page which makes it stand out against the rest of the page.
