IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCTS USE,

DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

Page 2: Evaluation question 1

My media products both use and

challenge conventions of real

music videos, digipaks and

magazine adverts. There are a

number of theories/ideas and

existing media products that I

used as influence

Page 3: Evaluation question 1

HOW DID I USE AND/OR DEVELOP FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS(USING

INFLUENCES)?

ANDREW GOODWIN

In relation to the conventions of music videos that Andrew Goodwin lay down, I

have followed and developed some forms.

The singer in my music video is used as both the narrator and main character

which as suggested by Goodwin is how it tends to be

I stuck to one of the three possible types of relations between songs and

videos. I chose to use illustration which is when the visual performance tells

the story of the lyric. I developed this convention as I also incorporated some

characteristics of amplification which is when the video adds layers of meaning

to the lyrics. For example, when the lyric says something about being

somewhere he never wanted to be, the artist is seen under a tunnel. I did this

to connote the fact that he felt trapped and alone with no way out.

CAROL VERNALIS

Carol vernalis put forward some forms and conventions of music videos

that I have followed

I used a number of master shots (base tracks) to give my video a

structure, e.g.:.

My video contains a lot of jump cuts which are obvious to attract

attention

The camera movement in my video is often in sequence with the

beat/rhythm

There is a lack of continuity editing

MAVERICK SABRE – LOOK WHAT I ’VE DONE TO YOU

The video of Look What I’ve Done To You by Maverick Sabre is one that

had a large influence on my decisions regarding mise en scene,

camerawork and editing. We took and used in our own way the following

elements:Camerawork (side view), location (bus stop), editing (black and white)

Location (tunnel)

MAVERICK SABRE – I NEED

The video of I Need by Maverick Sabre is another video that

gave me some ideas. We used these different things:Mise en scene (water)

One more video that influenced my decisions is London City by Devlin. Initially, I was attracted to this video because of it’s editing however we chose not to use too much fast motion because the pace of I need is quite slow. We used the following elements

MAVERICK SABRE – LONELY ARE THE BRAVE

I believe I followed the main conventions of a digipak(artist name, photo of

artist, album name, tracklist, barcode etc.) however the layout I chose to use is

less common. I got my influence from Maverick Sabre’s album ‘Lonely Are The

Brave’ structure and colour-wise. I thought his digipak was perfectly suited to

his genre which is the same as mine therefore my theme is almost identical.

MAGAZINE ADVERT

I did not use any specific artist’s album magazine

advert as influence for my own however I did follow

the main forms and conventions. This includes artist

name, album name, image of digipak, release date

and company ident’s. One way in which it can be

said I challenged the forms and conventions is that I

didn’t include an image of my artist as well as the

digipak which has a photo of them big and clear.

HOW HAVE I CHALLENGED FORMS AND CONVENT IONS OF REAL MEDIA P RODUCT S ?

Page 13: Evaluation question 1

According to Andrew Goodwin, the singer in

a music video directly addresses the

audience by looking straight into the camera

in order to involve the viewer at home with

the performance. This is something I

purposely chose not to do as I think it makes

the performance more natural and heart-felt.

It ties in with our song in also as it makes it

look like the singer is in his own world and is

in need of direction and support.

Example from my video

Page 14: Evaluation question 1

In our music video we manipulated the speed

of small sections of footage to make it both

faster and slower. It can be said that this

challenges forms and conventions of music

videos as fast motion tends to be used only

for a song with quick pace. Maverick Sabre –

I Need is relatively slow paced however we

decided to use fast motion briefly to keep the

video exciting and interesting to watch.

Page 15: Evaluation question 1

My video consists mainly of scenery and establishing shots

of the city and this is a way that I challenged forms and

conventions of real media products as music videos tend to

include lyrical performance more than anything else. These

types of shots that I used quite a lot are usually only seen at

the beginning of a video to set the scene and make the

location clear.Examples from my video
