Analysis in relation to other texts
Example
My feature
My feature is about the Olympics and how youth are affected by the Olympics. This is a very mainstream idea as this would affect a lot of people young and old. Therefore I decided I was going to look specifically how the youth was affected in the local areas surrounding the Olympics. Within this I would look to get different opinions on how this has affected youth from young people and people who are connected to youth such as universities.

Content
My Feature
My feature is different compared to both the old and new text as these documentaries are aimed at one person who is looking to take part in the Olympics whereas my documentary is looking to see the positive and negative effects on how the Olympics have affected youth in the local communities. I could not find any documentary’s sustaining the same angle on the Olympics as mine as I think this is a very niche topic within the Olympics as a whole. However my content of my documentary was similar to the old text as it had cuts from the news reports within both documentaries.
Old Text
This documentary is very different from my documentary as the angle of this documentary is of a young boy and the upbringing of him to becoming part the Olympic team for Sydney 2000. Within this documentary it gives you background knowledge of the kid. From this knowledge you learn how old he is, where he lives, what sort of upbringing he has had and his hobbies and interests. You find this information from several interviews from family members and coaches and the boy himself. In contrast to my documentary where my angle is not based on one person it is based on an age group, however there are still similarities between this and my documentary as they both have interviews with how the Olympics will affect youth.
New Text
This documentary is similar content to my documentary as they interview several professionals about how the Olympics if affecting Tom Daley. This is the same as I spoke to several people, Chris Cummins, mike gapes and Elizabeth Egan to get their views on the Olympics and how this will affect youth in the local community. This documentary also is quite different to my documentary as it does not contain any Vox Pops or views from the public whereas mine does.
Mode of Address
My Feature
The mode of address used in my documentary was informal; this documentary also consists of an indirect mode of address and is very upbeat. This was the mode of address for my documentary as this is what would appeal to them the most, rather than having a slow and formal documentary. Although some of the interviews within my documentary were formal this still worked well with the rest of my documentary as it gave it a good balance.
The locations I used where casual and easy to access for my target audience. My target audience would either go to these locations or the locations I used where landmarks that would be well known by my target audience.
Old Text
This documentary is completely in contrast to my documentary as it is very formal and direct to the audience. Even in the interviews with the young boy and family the mode of address is kept very formal and direct. As this documentary is quite old and with this mode of address then this documentary would be aimed at a much older target audience then mine indicating why there is a difference in the mode of addresses.
The presenter pieces to camera are very formal and direct, he comes across very posh which would not appeal to my documentary target audience as the people, he is also dressed very smart in a suit which wouldn’t appeal to my target audience as none would wear suits unless they were in school or sixth form. This connotes that the old text is aimed at a much older target audience.
New Text
This documentary is quite new and sustains a very similar mode of address to my documentary as overall I would say this documentary is informal and indirect however there as parts where this documentary comes across quite formal. For example the voice overs within this documentary come across very direct and formal, however the interviews with Tom Daley’s coach and father and very informal and come across chatty which helps the documentary appeal to a younger target audience then the old text. In the new text people are dressed very casual in shirt and jeans, which gives the documentary a laidback and informal mode of address.
Here is two interviews one with Tom Daley’s father and one with his coach wearing casual clothes. Such as jeans and a shirt or a polo and jumper. This helps with the informal mode of address as it gives the documentary a casual feel to it.
Conventions
My feature
In my documentary I feel that I used a range of conventions throughout my documentary, these being; archive footage, graphics, music, voice over, interviews, vox pops, transitions and signing on and off from presenter.
Here is a screenshot of some archive footage I used in my documentary of the announcement of London winning the Olympics for 2012.
Here is a screenshot of the style of graphics I used throughout my documentary.
Here is a screenshot of my presenter Damiano Shehu signing on.
Here is a screenshot of one of my Vox Pops in Stratford.
For the music I used mainstream artists that my target audience would know and appeal to them. I songs I used were Labrinth earthquake instrumental, Coldplay paradise, Louder and Example. These are all well known musicians and all these songs a mainstream to my audience.
Old Text
The conventions in my old documentary were similar to most that I had included in my documentary. The conventions in this documentary were; sign in and sign off, interviews, archive footage and graphics.
The difference between the conventions we used was voice over, music and vox pops. The reason this documentary does not include vox pops because they do not need to get the public opinion on the matter as the documentary is about a 14 year old boy and becoming and getting an Olympic spot. However vox pops could have been included of the boy’s family members talking about the boy who would of gave the documentary more humour and fast paced.
New Text
The new text is more similar to mine as it included much more conventions then the old documentary. This documentary included voice over, graphics, interviews, music, and archive footage. Other then these conventions this documentary was also quite different as not at any point during the documentary was the presenter on screen whereas in mine I had about 3 or 4 parts where my presenter was on screen. Not having a presenter does not make this documentary bad as they include a clear voice over throughout the documentary. I feel this gives the documentary a more formal and serious feel to the documentary as you cant see the person your talking to. Although for this type of documentary it is just affective as having a presenter.
Here is a graphic of the Logo of the company producing the documentary.
Here is a screenshot of an interview from the old text.
The music in this documentary was very different to mine as I used mainstream songs that would appeal to my younger target audience of 16-‐24 year olds, however this documentary only one piece of music which was like a melody at the beginning.
Style and Form
My Feature
In my documentary I wanted it to be like other sports documentary. I wanted there to be a vast variety of shots and the music. The range of shots would appeal to my target audience, as this would allow my documentary to be fast paced and would look good when changing from shot to shot. The music helped the style and form of my documentary a lot as the music was very mainstream and in the charts. This is similar to other sports documentaries, as they would use upbeat music like what I used. I felt that my opening set the style for an upbeat and fast documentary as I used Labrinth earthquake, which is very upbeat and fast. This would appeal to my audience as it has such a distinctive beat it is recognisable straight away. I continue to use similar fast or upbeat pieces throughout the rest of my documentary. Below are a variety of shots I used throughout my documentary.
This convention is of the interviews between both New text and my feature. These shots are both similar side on shots for the interviews, which shows that they are not being direct to audience. Both these shots also having talking space which is the space between the way they are facing and the edge of the shots. For example in my shot on the right the talking space includes Mike Gapes desk, which connotes the location, is in his office whereas the other is against a plan wall.
Old Text
The old text has very few similarities to my documentary. The only similarities that our documentaries shared were the presenter’s pieces to camera as they were both are talking straight to the camera. The reason for not many similarities is because this documentary was very formal and this is what I was not going for as I was going for a more informal and casual mode of address.
New Text
In this documentary I felt the style was very modern. Everything was very clean and simple for example graphics used in the documentary were plain white but still stood out which gave this documentary feel fresh and clean. The shots in this documentary were similar to mine as I felt they worked very well within the new text documentary and would also work well in my documentary therefore both documentaries consisted of similar shots. For example in the interviews in my documentary I had talking space so It doesn’t feel like there talking straight to the camera.
I also felt the editing within this documentary was good as the cutting of shots allowed the documentary to keep a fast pace feel to it. I also felt this would suit my documentary so In interviews I tried to cut them down as much as possible to get the most relevant information out of the interview.
As you can see both of these shots are very similar opening shots where both presenters sign on talking straight direct to the camera.
Technology
My Feature
I think that for my documentary I used standard technology that was provided by my school. I feel that the equipment was good enough for what I was filming although I would have preferred to film on a HD camera so the shots would of come out more clearer as the come out blurry on the normal Panasonic Camera I was given.
I also think the editing programme iMovie on the Mac was good enough for what I wanted to do to my documentary as it had a wide range of transitions and sound effects to chose from. Although If I had more time I would have like to move my work over to Final Cut pro where you can add more effects to clips and also make better graphics using the Live Type software. If I was to use the Live type software I would of made more animated and clearer graphics and as I had to create them on IMovie I felt this let down my documentary as they didn’t fit with what I was planning.
Old Text
For the old documentary you can tell that the technology used back then is a lot less developed then today as the shots are very blurry and pixelated. However the way they used the technology is to a very high standard as all the shots have been filmed properly. The sound of very presenter and interviewee’s is very weak and muffled so it is hard to understand them in parts.
For these shots they are very clever how it was cut and edited as the first shot was of him giving instructions to Tom Daley with a cutaway of a dive then it went to Andy Banks interview, which I thought was very good as you already know who the guy is before the interview.
As you can see even though the graphics on the new text is just white it is more effective and stylish then the graphics on my documentary.
New Text
The new text would be using much better equipment then me as the BBC are the producers of this documentary, where they are going to have the highest quality equipment to film with. The camera used was probably HD as the footage is very clear when watching it and they probably also used a Boom Mic for interviews to pick up the sound very clearly. They probably also used some lighting for certain interviews to allow all the focus on the interviewee’s.
As you can see from the screenshot that the graphic is quite pixelated in this documentary due to them not having the same technology as we have today.
From these three screenshots you can Cleary see that the new text documentary by the BBC is filmed in HD and with much better quality equipment compared to both the old documentary and my documentary.
