In what ways does you media product use , develop or challenge conventions ?

Page 3: Evaluation

In this slide you can see a number of shots from different points within the filmI feel from these shots and the slides to follow that it is evident that the product I

have createdDevelops and challenges conventions. This is because the music is in a genre of it’s

own.The use of live footage is something that the band is quite well known for , they do

alot of small venue gig’s and a couple of videos they have done incorporate live footage.

The special effects at the live shows helped with the overall outcome and a collaboration of my own effects put into the video have had a nice outcome.

A range of shots , long mid and short have been used all though the style of shot really doesn't differ.

When at the gig’s filming I had no Idea that they would be put into my media studies work , this is why some there aren't a range of shot styles.

I feel that this may be a big downfall within my work.

I fell that my work certainly challenges conventions just by the way it was filmed , compared to other music videos there isn't much other than just live clips.

For some people they may find this boring and others may really like it.

Personally I feel that some more shots of going to and leaving the venue would of been appropriate.

Analyse via theory

The theory I will be basing my work on will be a theory of Andrew Goodwins

Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features which distinguish the music video as a form:

There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.

When the clapping kicks in there is a video of everyone in the crowd clapping , this shows a link between the lyrics and the visuals.

There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.

During the “trance” part of the music there are more effects being used and during the heavier parts you can see more people in the crowd getting involved.

Genres are complex and diverse in terms of music video style and iconographyEnter Shikari don't really follow a genre , they base there current albums off there style and then

there influences at the time , this is why there is such a huge difference between the albums “Take To The Skies” and “Common Dreads”

Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist

The close ups I managed to get weren't really that close up , this was a restriction due to the barriers being put in place

Does my music video demonstrate it’s genre through terms of mise-en-scene/camera shots

The music video I have created certainly shows a strong feel of the genre through the mise-en-scene , this is because of it being a live show people will dress up supporting the band of the genre of the band. For instance a lot of bright colours and ¾

shorts/jeans

You can see a typical dress sense from the band themselves wearing a colour coded (which is smart) but youthful dress sense , this alone questions conventions weather young people can be smartly dressed for this type of genre. The type of genre brings out a uniqueness in people , as for one of the lyrics “we music unite” followed by a range of languages shows that

Enter Shikari and there fans feel that there isn't a specific genre , colour , dress sense that will sub divide there fans.

The video flows with the music and follows a feel that Enter Shikari themselves have used in videos for a while , this type of video can be seen a lot in hardcore genre bands , this is because it’s seen as rebellious , having a laugh but also may be seen as

the only way to catch the atmosphere of listening to hardcore music. Set your goals is a perfect example of another band using similar video forms

n terms of camera shots there is a lot of speeding up , slowing down , quick shots , slow shots and then a range of shots due to distance , this was to give the feel of what it was like to be close up to the band , in the middle of crowd and at the back of the venue watching the band , there is often a subdivide with in the venue , something like an unwritten law where as standing at the front gets your squashed but close to the band , in the middle your usually dancing , for this type of music in a mosh pit

and then at the back enjoying a drink or filming.

Is there a relationship between shots and storyline in relation to visuals and lyrics

Being a live video there is little to no story , just the band performing live. As to storyline , the actual video for the “Sorry your not a winner” is similar as by it’s live filming in someone's house while

the band play around them , the story line of that and my video is that the whole genre and meaning of the band is to have fun , during the calmer parts you cool down and then when it’s

hectic get involved.

Does my music video represent a relationship between lyrics and visuals

As mentioned before , within the video there is a huge link within the lyrics and visuals being performed live then.

As you can see in the video during the trance there is a huge number of lights , blurry effects to try and give the effect that your there and during the slower bits it’s more focused. This is te only

relationship between the lyrics and visuals I could make , aswell as the clapping.

Effect of video on ancillary text

The music video it’s self doesn't use any text , it would of been interesting to see how well it would of incorporated into a piece of work.

Might of been a good idea to use some text to introduce the band before the video , or in cases of music video tv programmes such as MTV put a little into in the corner

Main product and ancillary text

For my main products such as the poster and the digi pack I used the closest text I could to the actual style of Enter Shikari’s current text.

This has an effect on fans as straight away they will relate to that font type and notice it straight away and be attracted to the video if they like the band.

Aswell as that using the closes font I could to Kerrang has also out an interest into fans of K! Knowing it straight away

Page 8: Evaluation

Enter Shikari’s album covers next to my final

As you can see the only similarity between the albums is the text being used , I chose the images I got from the live gig because it could be a live gig album only , Enter Shikari have

already produced a DVD of thisIt would of been interesting to see what a similar copy to there albums would of come from , if you look at Enter Shikari’s there is a difference in there style of album art , this is also related

within there music.

Promotional Poster

The ancillary text in the poster is key to the design , and the promotion. As well as using

Kerrang two well known fonts being used to add to the promotion side

Then theres the fact that Rob , Enter Shikari’s drummer is the focal point , this will draw in any

Enter Shikari fan

The use of colour is really important because of the text and focal point , if they were too dark the text may not be able to be read , the background

drop behind rob is also key as it says Enter Shikari but it’s just a snippet of there current font

Feedback from the audience“How did you find the audiences feedback”

I found the feedback really useful , if it wasn't for user feedback there would be alot more wrong with my product. For instance the colour on the poster and the images on the digi – pack , without the

feedback I wouldn't of changed these.

Another use of the feedback is to understand were the people are coming from , this helped give an insight on my graphics work as I took more notice of customer and audience rather than my own

ideas.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research , planning and evaluation stages ?

• To help with the construction of my work I used a video camera and editing software at home I had lying around. Cyber link Director pro was my chosen software as I found it much easier to use than pinnacle which was available at 6th Form. With the construction of my work I also tried not to use a tripod to get a feel for it rather than having a stable camera I wanted to allow the

viewer feel as if they were there with me , watching the band.

• To do the research I used Wikipedia , Google , friends and my own knowledge towards bands and lyrics , from the lyrics came the planning.

• The research , I feel , is the most important part of the product , without the research I wouldn’t of change the band , the style of music of the style of the poster and wouldn’t probably have

finished my product as it was so time consuming.

• The planning was almost , if not just as important as the research , the planning consisted of me getting to the gig to record , getting hold of some friends to help me record and take some quality

photos. The planning was that much of a help it seemed almost like a prototype for me , the development was very well thought out and the evaluation with the development had such an

impact there isn't much difference from the development to the final.

• The evaluation helped me get the feedback and changes I knew.
