Question 3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? A film distributor is a company that is responsible for the marketing of a film. It does things such as sets a release date for the film and also how it is to be viewed such as in cinemas or for home viewing. If the film distributor owns the cinemas or the film distribution networks then it will do this directly, also through theatrical exhibitors and other s0ub-distributors. However, smaller, more limited distributors will only be only to use smaller products such as DVD’s or Blu-Ray’s. For our film we would need a smaller, independent film distributor. This is because it is not the genre of film that everyone would go and see as our film’s target audience is people of the working class, so it would only need to be released on DVD’s and sold in shops so that people who wish to view it, can do. If we were to use a real life distributor then we would use ‘Warp’. This is because this distributor specialises in British crime/drama films such as ‘Tyrannosaur’ and ‘This Is England’ which are small budget films like ours and are also close to the same genre of film. However, these have been a success. They have received good reviews and made a lot of money so we wish to do the same. So this film distributor would likely to be willing to produce, promote and distribute our film. Our film is more likely to be show in an independent art house cinema. This is because it has a niche audience as the target audience is working class males ages 15-25 so this is very particular in who will watch this film unlike a film with a large target audience such as Avatar. This type of film would be shown in a multiplex cinema because a lot of people wish to watch this and it also has a very large budget to deal with.

Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A film distributor is a company that is responsible for the marketing of a film. It does things such as

sets a release date for the film and also how it is to be viewed such as in cinemas or for home

viewing. If the film distributor owns the cinemas or the film distribution networks then it will do this

directly, also through theatrical exhibitors and other s0ub-distributors. However, smaller, more

limited distributors will only be only to use smaller products such as DVD’s or Blu-Ray’s.

For our film we would need a smaller, independent film distributor. This is because it is not the

genre of film that everyone would go and see as our film’s target audience is people of the working

class, so it would only need to be released on DVD’s and sold in shops so that people who wish to

view it, can do.

If we were to use a real life distributor then we would use ‘Warp’. This is because this distributor

specialises in British crime/drama films such as ‘Tyrannosaur’ and ‘This Is England’ which are small

budget films like ours and are also close to the same genre of film. However, these have been a

success. They have received good reviews and made a lot of money so we wish to do the same. So

this film distributor would likely to be willing to produce, promote and distribute our film.

Our film is more likely to be show in an independent art house cinema. This is because it has a niche

audience as the target audience is working class males ages 15-25 so this is very particular in who

will watch this film unlike a film with a large target audience such as Avatar. This type of film would

be shown in a multiplex cinema because a lot of people wish to watch this and it also has a very

large budget to deal with.

For the marketing of our film we would advertise on the internet on social networking sites and

maybe on YouTube. This is because it’s cheaper to do this and we only have a small budget to work

with. Bigger films that are shown in multiplex cinemas would be advertised everywhere like on the

streets on billboards, on the TV etc.
