1. Evacuation Procedures There will be a full evacuation of the school in the event of a fire or any other evacuation required. This means that all staff and pupils

should evacuate and assemble in the allocated area. Pupils will be counted in and out in class groups. • Staff should familiarise themselves with the location and route to the nearest fire exit from all the teaching spaces they use as well

as an alternative exit should the shortest route present a risk to themselves or their pupils. Fire exit arrows are displayed on the corridors

• Pupils and staff alike need to familiarise themselves with the location of the mustering points and should know the mustering point allocated for their classroom, as well as the gate that should be used to enter the MUGA. A specific gate is allocated to each classroom

• All school buildings will be on a common single alarm • There will be a full evacuation • The muster points are in the Multi Use Games Area; the gates into the area are lettered • The muster points are numbered and each classroom will be allocated a muster number • Staff pick up their laminated muster point card from their top drawer and evacuate their class • Each classroom will be allocated a specific gate to use to enter the MUGA so as to reduce congestion • Pupils will be evacuated accompanied by the teacher responsible for the teaching group and will line up in class groups to be

counted by their class teacher. Pupils should line up in one line starting from the fence. This will ensure that there is sufficient space for movement and visibility down the centre of the MUGA

• A ‘Fire Barrier’ will automatically drop to separate the two halves of the building. Staff and pupils must not attempt to pass under this barrier once the fire alarm has been activated. Pupils will be trained during assembly time on the correct procedure to avoid this barrier

• Fire Wardens are to ensure that their areas are clear, including any offices or toilets and confirm this with the ‘Designated SLT’ at the muster area

• The allocated number should be clearly displayed in each classroom • Fire drills will be organised on a regular basis and as a minimum once a term • Staff who are not teaching at the time or not class teachers should report to the staff evacuation point • All support staff and visitors should report to the Admin Manager who will be located at the far end of the MUGA i.e. the end

furthest away from the sports centre. Support staff to help to ensure calm entry into the MUGA before moving to their mustering station. Once checked off they should help manage pupils

• The alarm system is a “double knock” system. This means that when a fire alarm is activated there will be a delay of 3 minutes, unless there is a second activation, before the alarm will go off. During this time an alarm will sound on the control panel,

Page 4: Evacuation Procedure

Page 4 of 14 Malet Lambert School, Evacuation Procedure, Version 21/22-1.0

allowing caretakers to identify if a full evacuation is needed. If a full evacuation is needed then the alarm will sound across the school and all staff and pupils should evacuate without delay.

• Once the nearest exit is used to exit the building, staff should lead the pupils to the MUGA following the directions advised on the attached map if it is safe to do so. If the route is blocked or presents risk to the staff and pupils please use one of the alternative external routes.

• There are some gates that have to be opened in the safety line around the school in the event of an evacuation. These gates are located at the South West Corner of the building (English) and at the West Corner of the Car Park. Procedures are in place to ensure that these are opened quickly in the case of an evacuation to ensure quick movement to the MUGA. In addition the gates around the MUGA need to be opened.

• Specific staff will be given keys for these external gates – South West Corner gate – English staff

West gate at Car Park and MUGA gates - PE staff 2. SEND Pupils

• The evacuation procedures for SEN pupils can be found in Appendix 1 3. Bomb threat or similar

• The evacuation procedures specifically in case of a bomb threat or similar can be found in Appendix 2 4. Risk Assessments The following risk assessments are available from the Site Manager:

• Wood Dust – Hazards and Procedures • Safe Handling of solvents • Safe Handling of flammable gases

Appendix 1 Evacuation procedures for SEND pupils 2021-22 General • Pupils should leave by the closest safe route, as detailed in the whole school evacuation plan • Teaching assistants who are supporting pupils should accompany them out of the building to the muster point • Lifts are prohibited from use during an emergency evacuation • PEEPS are available for pupils who have mobility/ sensory issues Visually impaired pupils • Pupils with a visual impairment may be guided on level surfaces by offering an arm • On stairways if a handrail is available the pupil will use this and the guide will stand slightly in front, to the side so that they can offer an arm Physically disabled pupils/staff • Where disabled pupils are unable to use stairways without assistance it will be necessary to use refuge areas • Refuges areas provide a place of relative safety for disabled pupils and staff before being assisted to a final exit • Where possible the pupil should never be left alone in a refuge point to wait for the Fire and Rescue Services • The refuge can be used as a safe resting place or as a place to wait until it is safe to exit the building. The teaching assistant who is supporting the

disabled pupil should wait with him/ her • The teaching assistant should phone reception/radio SLT and then caretakers and SEND team to report the location of the disabled person, find out

where the fire is and see if there is a safe evacuation route from the refuge out of the building or to a safer refuge point • When a safe route either out of the building or to a refuge point as far as possible from the fire has been identified this should be taken. The

teaching assistant must keep the responsible person in charge of the evacuation informed of this location • If required the fire and rescue services can be informed of the location when they arrive • In the event that teaching assistant support is not present in the class teacher should phone the SEND Manager so that support can be deployed Staff training • Designated teaching assistants have received training in the use of the Evac Chair from IPASS. The SEND Manager holds a record of training • We have four Evac Chairs due to having two pupils with wheelchairs. The Evac Chairs are essential for our current pupils

In the case of a Bomb threat or similar

In the most part staff should treat this in exactly the same manner as a normal building evacuation with a few changes as detailed below:

• The evacuation bell will sound as normal • Wardens will act as previously advised in the policy • Staff pick up their laminated muster point card from their top drawer and evacuate their class as normal. They remain in charge of their class • Pupils may take their bags and coats, if not too disruptive or unsafe to do so, as we could be outside for a while. Staff to judge accordingly. • Count your pupils out of the classroom, ask them to wait and then lead them out of the building • Where possible, a message on the school tannoy will direct as a ‘Field Evacuation’ • Where not possible, or not heard in some areas, members of staff will be strategically placed across the school to ensure that staff and pupils do not

go to the hard courts (used for a fire evacuation) – but will instead be directed to the school field • There are two entrances to the field. Science, Technology, LRC and MFL classes are to use the entrance next to the Dearing building. All other

subjects should use the double entrance towards the left hand side of the field as you look at it • PE department will lock the gate leading to the sports hall behind them when they have evacuated their classes successfully • Staff are to lead their class to the top of the field towards Ings Road as far as possible without causing crowding of one particular area. Please don’t

be afraid to spread out along the top fence • Staff will then line their class up in an orderly fashion, standing at the back of them, so that they can be more easily seen • Count your pupils at this stage to ensure that they are all there • Any pupils unaccounted for should be reported to the Chief Warden immediately • As this is a rare evacuation, the back of the field does not have the muster points displayed as it does in the hard courts. Therefore, we ask that you

simply hold up your laminated muster point sign so that we can account for your class that way • Staff continue to take responsibility for their own class, particularly with regards to behaviour. Keep pupils calm please. Particularly, keep an eye on

mobile phones where our rules continue to apply. • Await further instruction
