Danica Avsec, MD Institut of the Republic of Slovenia for the Transplantation of Organs and Tissues Contact: [email protected] The major outcomes of the survey show that after the EDD event in 2010: Public received more information on organ donation. Information of some particular subjects of organ donation was better spread out. Awareness of EDD celebration among general public was higher. A part of the general public got new and interesting information about organ donation; new information influenced their opinion, feelings and decision making in a positive way. The conducted survey could be used as a base line for future evaluation of impact of EDDs. The sample of the questionnaire for the evaluation of the event is available on the website www.europeandonationday.org. The most interesting results of the survey in a graphical presentation TOOLKIT FOR EVENT ORGANIZERS The main result of the project was a booklet Toolkit for event organizers of European Dona- tion Day which filled the absence of the appropriate framework on a European level. The guidelines are seen as a useful tool for the organization of future celebrations of European Donation Day. With the event the general public, health care professionals, media and po- litical audience should be addressed. They all play a crucial role in the further development of efficient treatment with transplantation. Toolkit offers more information about the motivation behind the organisation of EDD, its history and relevance to communication with public. Moreover it proposes all practical guidelines how to organize and structure the event from the start till its end. To conclude, there are instructions how to evaluate the effect of the event on the public. Toolkit is available on the EDD website www.europeandonationday.org. Nearly all European countries are facing with the challenge of how to increase public awareness and participation in organ donation. Although several studies demonstrate that the majority of the European public supports the idea of organ donation, there is a vast gap between the idea and public participation, since the number of organ donors is by and large in decline. The European average is around 16 deceased donors per million popula- tion (pmp), which is considered a rather low rate. One of the most important factors that influences the organ donation rate is social awareness. Promotion of the transplantation medicine and increasing public awareness for the donation of human body parts for the treatment is a multilevel, ongoing and challenging activity. One of the responses of the European health policy of how to address these challenges is included in the Action Plan (2009-2015) which the Commission of the European Communities has launched. To achieve goals of Action plan, there was a need to establish one day dedicated specifically to organ and tissue donation and transplantation in order to attract more attention to the issue, to spread credible information and to sensitize the public. However there was no vast tradition or guidelines developed for the ogranisation of a European Donation Day (EDD). EU FUNDED PROJECT: DEVELOPING GUIDELINES FOR THE ORGANISATION OF A EUROPEAN DONATION DAY In order to help raise public awareness and attract the attention of the public to the issue of organ donation and transplantation, a common framework for the European Donation Day (EDD) celebration was needed. Scheme of the celebration has been developed during the project “Developing guidelines for the organization of a European Donation Day” (2009 – 2011) funded by EU Health Programme framework. Moreover the goal of the project was to evaluate event’s awareness raising potential. European Donation Day is shorter name for European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation. Tissue and cell donation and transplantation are integrated in the concept of the day as well. The main goals and objectives of a unified EDD celebration are: To raise public awareness in the field of organ and tissue donation and transplantation. To express acknowledgment to all the people involved in transplant process (who are transplant patients and their families, organ donor families, health care professionals). To establish trust among general public towards responsible, high ethical, non-commercial and professional organ donation and transplantation. To share and discuss challenges and innovations in transplant medicine among health care professionals. In a long term to increase the number of organ and tissue donors; with continuous and yearly repetitive EDD events we can achieve a bigger impact. With years the occasion of EDD is seen to become a primary awareness-raising “voice” and event regarding organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Europe. Towards a unified European Donation Day: second Saturday in October. PROJECT SURVEY: MEASURING AWARENESS POTENTIAL OF EDD Part of the project was an evaluation survey of the European Donation Day that was con- ducted in Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic and Slovakia (in 2010). The aim of the survey was to measure awareness raising potential of EDD celebration among general public. Web interviewing (CAWI) was performed in two waves: A month before the event and again right after the event. Questions about public’s information, knowledge, opin- ion about organ donation and awareness of EDD celebration were asked. In each country a sample of 700 respondents, representative according gender, age and region was used. The comparison of the results before and after the celebration showed an impact of the EDD celebration on measured variables. The survey’s statistical results confirmed the pur- pose of having EDD celebration.
