On behalf of the 2016 jury, I would like to warmly congratulate this year’s worthy recipients of the European Language Label Award and the Language Learner Awards. These awards identify, encourage and celebrate language teaching and learning across a wide range of sectors and contexts. They celebrate openness to developing plurilingualism and embracing multiculturalism.

The European Language Label recognises the application of creativity and innovation in improving the quality of language teaching and learning. It is awarded to projects that use and develop innovative ways of motivating and supporting learners in their language learning.

The 2016 winning projects highlight inspiring initiatives that motivate and support learners, from toddlers to adults, to embrace the challenge of learning another language. The projects demonstrate creative thinking about language teaching and learning in a wide variety of contexts, from pre-school to teacher education courses, leading to improved teaching provision and learner achievement.

To ensure the excellence of each award-winning project, the jury intensively examines the applications, shortlists the projects that meet the Language Label criteria and organises a site-visit. This year the Language Label was awarded to eight projects across a wide range of sectors and languages.

These award-winning projects provide a potential source of inspiration and motivation for others teaching and learning languages. They highlight that innovation in language teaching and learning is possible in any context, sector or language.

The Language Learner Award is presented to individuals who have displayed exceptional commitment to the development of their plurilingual competence. The 2016 awards recognise the inspirational application and achievements of four recipients at four very different life-stages. Their motivations for learning languages range from economic necessity to hobby and their plurilingualism has opened life enhancing opportunities for them. They are ambassadors for the benefits to the individual and society of developing plurilingual and multicultural competence

at any age.

Thar ceann giúiré na bliana 2016 ba mhaith liom comhghairdeas ó chroí buaiteoirí an Séala Eorpach Teanga agus na ngradam Foghlaimeoir Teanga. Is maith atá siad tuillte acu. Leis na gradaim seo aithnítear teagasc agus foghlaim teanga, agus spreagtar agus ceiliúrtar é thar réimse fhairsing earnála agus comhthéacsanna. Ceiliúrtar oscailteacht i leith ilteangachas a fhorbairt agus ilchultúrthacht a chuimsiú.

Tugann an Séala Eorpach Teanga aitheantas d’fheidhmiú na cruthaitheachta agus na nuálaíochta i bhfeabhsú cáilíochta an teagasc agus foghlaim teanga. Bronntar ar thograí é a úsáideann agus a fhorbraíonn slite nuálacha chun foghlaimeoirí a spreagadh agus tacú leo agus iad i mbun teanga a fhoghlaim. Díríonn tograí buaiteacha na bliana 2016 aird ar thionscnaimh spreagthacha a chuireann díograis ar fhoghlaimeoirí agus a thacaíonn leo, idir lapadáin agus dhaoine fásta, chun tabhairt faoin dúshlán atá i dteanga eile a fhoghlaim. Léiríonn na tograí smaoineamh cruthaitheach faoi theagasc agus foghlaim teanga i mórán comhthéacsanna éagsúla, idir réamhscoil agus chúrsaí oiliúna do mhúinteoirí, as a leanann go dtagann feabhas ar sholáthar teagaisc agus ar ghnóthachtáil an fhoghlaimeora.

“Crannóg and Spraoi le Brí are games developed to support the Irish language learning community (and speakers of Irish). Learners can enjoy the learning process through fast exciting games. This is done through increasing the players’ word power: in one game by spelling words, and in the other by speaking words. Players learn easily in these speedy and creative games: Crannóg develops players’ spelling ability, and Spraoi le Brí encourages players to think of different words for the same subject.

Crannóg is played with eight special 12-sided dice, giving a choice of eight random letters from a range of 96 letters on every throw. Players must attempt to spell a word from the eight uppermost letters. The object of the game is to move around a board, towards the objective - the Crannóg. The longer the word the more spaces the player moves; although in this game of skill the longest word is not always the best word! Some steps have advantages, some disadvantages, and the players must attempt to ‘spell’ their way onto or past certain steps.

The game Spraoi le Brí has six packs of cards, each with a different theme such as nouns, verbs or adjectives. The player must ‘explain’

the words on the card to the other players without using the words themselves. Players need to be creative to find hints and clues in their vocabulary to help their teammates discover the words. The richness of Irish is also included with the themes of proverbs and common terms in the genitive case, thus covering the genitive in a fun way. Finally, there is a game called ‘5, 4, 3, 2, 1’ where in rapid-fire style players must call out five items they might find in a bathroom, four items in a schoolbag, three items on a pizza and so on - and all this under the pressure of time.

Both games should be played quickly, forcing players to think quickly. Neither game has complicated rules, and neither should be boring. Both games could be easily adapted to use in the teaching of other languages also.”

The games are produced to a high standard and great care has been taken with letter frequencies in Irish and

the use of the síneadh fada…Crannóg and Spraoi le Brí could easily be used in a wide range of teaching and

learning contexts

Sa cluiche Spraoi le Brí tá sé pháca cárta le sé théamaí éagsúla: briathar, aidiacht, ainmfhocal, srl. Is é an sprioc ná go ‘míneoidh’ an t-imreoir cad atá ar an chárta gan na focail féin atá ar an chárta a úsáid. Caithfidh imreoirí a bheith cruthaitheach agus teacht ar leideanna agus nodanna labhartha le go dtuigfidh na himreoirí eile na focail atá ar na cártaí. Tá saibhreas teanga tábhachtach anseo chomh maith, le rudaí fréamhaithe sa Ghaeilge mar seanfhocail agus téarmaí coitianta sa ghinideach ar dhá pháca cárta. Montessori en Français

The Old Schoolhouse Montessori School

“Montessori en Français is a French language programme designed for pre-primary school children. It was devised by Frances Carr, owner/manager of The Old Schoolhouse Montessori School, after observing the success of the immersion method of learning Irish as a second language at her pre-primary school in Lucan.

Montessori en Français began as an after-school session for children registered at the school, taking place after the three-hour ECCE (Early Childhood Care and Education) session. Gradually, the French language was expanded into the classroom throughout the ECCE session and eventually the project evolved into a three-hour bilingual English/French session.

Simply put, a native French teacher speaks French to the children while a second teacher speaks in English. The children speak English initially, but over time they are encouraged and prompted to use their new words. In this way, the French teacher can help each child develop their French vocabulary.

What is unique about Montessori en Français for Irish children is that they learn to hear and speak French in a natural way. Crucially,

the children learn French: the teachers do not teach it. The language is being lived by everyone in the classroom, and is spoken at a simple level so that children as young as three years old can understand. Pre-primary children love when they learn something new and they have no fear of trying out their new language.

The success of Montessori en Français is measured through the child’s delight at mastering a new language. Even at such a young age, they are aware that what they can do is special. Although it took some years to get this project off the ground, this success has made my persistence worthwhile. Being awarded with a European Language Label is an encouragement to me to continue with the project and expand it by making it accessible in other pre-primary schools. Of course, none of it would have been possible without the willingness and co-operation of the excellent teachers in the Montessori en Français classroom, whose obvious enjoyment at being involved in this project is what makes the learning such fun for the children.”

Jury Comments:

This project offers pre-school children an excellent opportunity to learn through French and English in a Montessori setting. There are two classroom teachers, a native English speaker and a native French speaker. Each uses their mother tongue as the language of the classroom. The physical, emotional and cognitive needs of the infants are met and they have the opportunity to learn another language through immersion

Learn Polish Limited

“The Polish School in Galway was founded in 2009 by Polish immigrants, when the need arose to care for Polish children. Its purpose is to preserve and promote the Polish language and Polish-Irish culture, tradition, and history for present and future generations. The Polish School in Galway also organises programmes, courses and events that highlight Polish and Polish-Irish culture and accomplishments. It’s a supplementary Saturday school for children who attend Irish schools during the week.

There are now 430 students and 32 teachers in two locations in Galway and a branch in Tuam. We teach using activating techniques in the classroom. The students range in age from three to 17. The youngest ones learn language through play and fun. The oldest one take Polish as a foreign language at Leaving Certificate level. We also have the world’s largest Polish school library with over 6,000 volumes and a digital catalogue.

Research has shown that bilingualism is beneficial for children’s development and their future. Children exposed to different languages become more aware of different cultures, other people and other points of view. But they also tend to be better than monolinguals at ‘multitasking’ and focusing attention. They are often more precocious readers, and generally find it easier to learn other languages. Bilingualism gives children much more than two languages.”

Jury Comments:

The school offers a very good structured educational setting for the children of Polish parents to learn Polish as

a living language, in tandem with their learning of English and Irish at mainstream primary and secondary

school... The structured school setting gives these young people the opportunity to learn Polish both as a spoken

and written language

“Moontour is revolutionising the way we teach Irish. Founded by Seán Greif in 2015, it was inspired by his experience of language learning with a tribe in the remote Brazilian Amazon and working as a glacier guide in Argentine Patagonia. Having spent over 20 years learning Irish, he was astonished to find that he was able to pick up other languages within six months. Upon his return, he developed an Adventure Learning framework for teaching languages, bringing his experience as an Irish teacher and his love for adventure together.

The Moontour team is brimming with energy, enthusiasm and a passion for teaching Irish. The core team of Seán, Hannah, Karl and Tom each bring their own experience and insight to the organisation. They target the syllabus through a unique methodology that incorporates specific learning outcomes and fun. For example, students learn verbs and tenses through yoga; conversational skills through water sports (including inventions such as kayak hurling and surf rugby); listening comprehension through DJ classes; written composition through photography; and reading comprehension through Moontour’s own bilingual computer game.

The goal is to normalise the Irish language, encourage its use both in and outside of the education system and to help students reach their desired level of fluency. This is done through peer and experiential learning, and positive reinforcement with the language. Students are encouraged and rewarded for speaking Irish, and the use of Irish is encouraged through peer regulation rather than from a top-down approach. This has proven extremely successful, with students continuing to use Irish even when unsupervised, at home with family or when engaging with each other on our social media.

The Moontour Model is self-sustainable, operates as an independent organisation and receives no funding. By creating value and generating revenue, Moontour can - and does - provide scholarships to 10% of all students, increasing the diversity and inclusivity of our courses. This sustainability is very important for the replication of the Moontour model for other indigenous languages, with plans in the pipeline for the Manx and Lakota

(Native American) languages in the near future.”

“Bord na Gaeilge, University College Dublin, founded its Irish Language Student Residence Scheme Teach na Gaeilge UCD in 2000 with the purpose of strengthening the Irish language community on campus. This mini-Gaeltacht offers a unique experience to students from various fields of learning, to live and work together on campus through the medium of Irish. Bord na Gaeilge UCD offers 24 scholarships to students who wish to use and promote the language through various student-led projects. The competition for scholarships is open to speakers from both Gaeltacht and non-Gaeltacht areas and the scheme forms a bridge between the language in the home, school or community and the language in the university and beyond.

Teach na Gaeilge UCD not only contributes to the preservation of the language, its student ambassadors also promote the language among their peers. Each student’s contract is based on active participation and specialised orientation courses have been developed to ensure that Irish is the language of choice within the group. The mix of incoming and current students, the diversity of study and recreational interests and the encouragement of leadership skills have all resulted in numerous innovative student-led projects. A specific accredited module

‘Scileanna Cumarsáide’ was developed through the UCD Horizons programme with the purpose of supporting such projects. The module enables students to organise events professionally and provides practical training in broadcasting skills; the module is a joint project between Bord na Gaeilge UCD, UCD School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore, and the company Gaelchultúr Teoranta. The students’ contribution to the Irish language community is acknowledged by the university at an annual ceremony and is noted on each student’s academic transcript.

The Bord na Gaeilge UCD scheme has succeeded in developing a network of speakers on campus, which far exceeds the 24 participants within the residence. Teach na Gaeilge UCD was the model on which the University of Glasgow, Scottish Gaelic Residence Scheme, Taigh na Gàidhlig.”

“The Alliance Française Dublin’s ‘À Petits Pas’ programme offers an innovative programme for toddlers and their parents which aims to enrich your child’s intellectual development and ability to be open to other languages and cultures, and to deepen the parent-child bond.

It introduces toddlers to French through hands-on, age-appropriate activities like games, songs, dancing and arts and crafts projects.

Specifically designed for children aged one to four by experts in early childhood education, the programme uses multi-sensory and teach-by-play techniques to help children develop cognitively, socially, and emotionally. Creative, themed classes taught entirely in French allow children to seamlessly become familiar with the language from a young age.

The programme promotes a gentle immersion experience in small groups to ensure individual attention for each child. Classes are limited to eight children and divided into four different age groups: classes for 12-24 month-olds last 45 minutes, while classes for two-year-olds, three-year-olds, four-year-olds and our three- and four-year-old bilingual group all last 75 minutes.”

Le Chéile Secondary School

“Last year Róisín Ní Dhonncha, teacher at Le Chéile secondary school in Dublin 15, teamed up with Juan Galván Sombrero of Colegio Montpellier in Madrid to devise an innovative language technology project which soon became known as ‘International Communicative Twins’ (ICT.) This project was done with second year pupils from Le Chéile.

The aims of the project were to practice and improve Spanish/English in the four skills (speaking, listening, writing and reading) through fun and motivating activities; to create an open and positive view of the partnership with pupils from another country through valuation and respect for another language and culture; and to improve the command of ICT.

Le Chéile pupils were divided into different mixed-ability groups for each e-activity and were twinned with a similar-sized group in Colegio Montpellier. The twins communicated through email, Skype and online messaging, giving feedback, advice and assessing each other’s work. All e-activity presentations and sports/dance performances were filmed, uploaded online and reviewed by their Spanish twins. Official assessment of each other’s work was done through the use of a rubric tool. Teachers and parents were also involved in this.

The project was made up of three e-activities. In ‘My Twin City’ pupils gathered information about each other’s twin city through Google map treasure hunts, research, online video presentations, in-house assessments of their twins, Skype video conferences and international Kahoot! competitions. Pupils created presentations using a range of tools including PowerPoint, Keynote, Prezi, Glogster, Padlet, Moovly, Powtoon, and Issuu. ‘Food and festivities’ proved a very popular module with Le Chéile pupils as many of them (and their teacher!) are real foodies! Pupils discovered how to cook Spanish dishes after school and were fascinated by all the different Spanish festivals. In ‘Dance and Sport’ pupils learned how to dance flamenco and play el pañuelo, from watching tutorial videos sent by Montpellier pupils. Le Chéile pupils taught their Spanish twins Gaelic football and how to dance ‘The Walls of Limerick’!”

Bhíodh na cúplaí ag déanamh cumarsáide trí ríomhphost, Skype agus teachtaireachtaí ar líne. Bhídís ag tabhairt aiseolais agus comhairle dá chéile agus ag déanamh measúnaithe ar obair a chéile. Rinneadh scannán de gach láithreoireacht ríomh-ghníomhaíochta agus láithreoireachtaí spóirt/rince. Uaslódáladh iad ar líne agus rinne na cúplaí ón Spáinn athbhreithniú orthu. Rinneadh measúnú a obair a chéile trí uirlis rúibrice a úsáid. Bhí múinteoirí agus tuismitheoirí bainteach leis chomh maith.

Bhí trí ríomhghníomhaíocht ag gabháil leis an togra. I “My Twin City” (“Mo Chomhchathair”) bhailigh na daltaí eolas ar chomhbhaile a chéile trí thoraíochtaí taisce de chuid Google Maps, taighde, láithreoireachtaí físeáin ar líne, measúnachtaí in-tí ar a gcúplaí, comhdhálacha físe Skype agus trí chomórtais Kahoot! idirnáisiúnta. Chruthaigh na daltaí láithreoireachtaí trí réimse uirlisí a úsáid lena n-áirítear PowerPoint, Keynote, Prezi, Glogster, Padlet, Moovly, Powtoon agus Issuu. ‘Tharla go raibh an-éileamh ar an modúl ‘Bia agus Féilte’ ag scoláirí Le Chéile mar bhí mórán acu (agus an múinteoir!) tógtha le bia! Tar éis scoile fuair na daltaí amach conas mar a dhéantar béilí Spáinneacha agus bhí siad faoi dhraíocht ag na féilí éagsúla Spáinneacha go léir. Sa mhodúl ‘Rince agus Spórt’ d’fhoghlaim na daltaí conas an rince flamenco a dhéanamh agus el pañuelo a imirt ó bheith ag féachaint ar fhíseáin a sheol daltaí Montpellier chucu. “Deutsch Lehren Lernen (DLL) is a new and innovative competency-based teacher training programme, aimed at acquiring the knowledge and methodology skills essential to good practice in the classroom. It was devised by the Goethe-Institut in partnership with Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, and in conjunction with an advisory body of leading language specialists from different universities in Germany. It was launched in 2013 with ECTS accreditation. The prerequisites for teaching and learning a foreign language are developed through the six core modules in a blended learning format. Other specialist modules enhance the core curriculum. The course materials are available in printed material and on DVDs, as well as in digital interactive Moodle format. The programme was introduced in Ireland in 2015 to include Irish participants on the international learning platform.

The DLL programme is learner-centric, providing opportunities for individuals to develop teaching skills through independent study within a flexible time frame, and in collaboration with others online. By exploring diverse approaches, participants improve their ability to recognise, manage and continuously build upon their own competencies and evidence of learning. Through

face-to-face seminars, online personal journals and learning portfolios, participants acquire important knowledge and skills during these ten-week modules. In viewing lesson recordings and carrying out Practical Exploration Projects (PEPs), they can reflect on their own classroom practice, apply newly-acquired knowledge and become lifelong learners. PEPs are an innovative element of DLL.

The online facility provides participants with maximum flexibility as they engage in their training or upskilling. The tools on the learning platform facilitate trainers in providing written feedback, guidance, discussions, live chats etc. - all designed to help individuals progress through each module. Videos are incorporated throughout the programme to give participants the opportunity to observe teaching and learning in other classrooms.

In different countries DLL has been incorporated into existing university courses and curriculum structures with ECTS accreditation. Goethe-Institut Irland plans to liaise with Irish universities in the future to integrate DLL into course programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.”

“Clár oiliúna múinteoirí nua nuálach is ea Deutsch Lehren Lernen (DLL) atá bunaithe ar inniúlacht agus dírithe ar an eolas agus na scileanna modheolaíochta a shealbhú atá riachtanach do dheachleachtas sa seomra ranga. Ba é Institiúid Goethe i gcomhpháirtíocht le hOllscoil Friedrich Schiller baile Jena agus i gcomhar le grúpa comhairleach príomhshaineolaithe teanga ó ollscoileanna éagsúla sa Ghearmáin a cuireadh an clár seo le chéile. Seoladh in 2013 é le creidiúnú ECTS (Córas Eorpach um Aistriú agus Carnadh Creidiúintí). Forbraítear réamhriachtanais chun teanga iasachta a mhúineadh agus a fhoghlaim trí sé cinn de phríomh-mhodúl i bhformáid foghlama cumaisc. Cuireann sainmhodúil eile leis an gcuraclam lárnach. Agus triail á baint acu as cuir chuige éagsúla cuireann na rannpháirtithe feabhas ar a gcumas a gcuid inniúlachtaí agus a gcuid cruthúnas foghlama féin a aithint, a bhainistiú agus is féidir leo cur leo go leanúnach.

Language learning and integration go hand in hand. Take the Swedish word ‘Lagom’. It is a uniquely Swedish term that doesn’t have an English equivalent. Lagom is ‘Just enough’, ‘Not too much or too little’, ‘Just right’, ‘Enough to go around’, ‘Fair share’. It indicates balance. Lagom doesn’t have the negative connotation of ‘sufficient’, nor does it claim perfection. It works in a lot of different contexts, which is why it is so interesting and special. This term not only has many applications but it represents the Swedish cultural and social ideals of equality and fairness. To fit that much about one nation in one word is fairly impressive! But then that’s what language learning is all about: learning a few words at a time and yet those few words can open up a whole world of understanding.

Migration is going on all around us and for migration to dovetail with integration, we need language learning. Language learning is a lifelong activity, something that can be taken up at any age,

and is immediately beneficial. Our four Language Learners of the Year are examples of individuals who are clearly outstanding at learning languages and who have benefitted from all the positive effects that language learning brings with it.

Tá foghlaim teanga agus comhtháthú ag gabháil le chéile. Féach mar shampla ar an bhfocal Sualainnise ‘Lagom’. Téarma uathúil Shualainnise is ea é nach bhfuil téarma comhfhreagrach ar fáil i mBéarla. Ciallaíonn lagom ‘dóthain go díreach’, ‘ní farasbarr agus ní easpa a bheith ann’, ‘díreach i gceart’, ‘dóthain do gach aoinne’, sciar cothrom. Tugann sé cothromaíocht le tuiscint. Foghlaimeoir Teanga na Bliana 2016

“Giulia is an outstanding language learner and was nominated by a teacher at Gaelscoil Chluain Meala, where she is now in 5th class. Giulia is a wonderful pupil and gives 100% to everything in school every day. Despite being only ten years old, she speaks English, Irish, German and Italian. She started in Junior Infants at a Gaelscoil with no knowledge of Irish, but it soon became clear she had a talent for languages and was soon speaking confidently to her teachers and to the other pupils. Her teacher then found out that she speaks German at home, and they often have brief conversations in German. Giulia even helps with vocabulary and corrects any mistakes!

Giulia was lucky to be brought up bilingually by a German mother and an Italian father. She learned German and Italian from birth, and English was then introduced. She attended an English preschool and began to learn Irish in Junior Infants. She frequently travels to Germany and Italy to see family and friends,

and speaks to her grandparents in German. She also watches DVDs, listens to CDs and reads in German and Italian.

Giulia has a wide understanding of different cultures and the traditions of countries outside Ireland as a result of her ability in languages. She often reads about Germany and Italy and when she visits her family in these countries she sees the way they celebrate special occasions and the ways they differ from Ireland.

Giulia wants to travel the world when she is older, and knows that speaking four languages will come in handy. However, for Giulia, it’s not just about knowing the languages, it’s about learning about different cultures and she knows she is really lucky to experience so many different traditions. She is very proud of her languages, as are her family - particularly her grandmother who lived in Cork and spoke Irish, just like Giulia, before moving to Germany. She is looking forward to all her future language learning adventures.”

“Is foghlaimeoir teanga faoi leith í Giulia, a bhí ainmnithe ag múinteoir i nGaelscoil Chluain Meala, áit a bhfuil sí i Rang a 5. Is scoláire den scoth í, a thugann 100% do chuile gníomhaíocht ar scoil gach lá. Cé nach bhfuil sí ach deich mbliana d’aois labhraíonn sí Béarla, Gaeilge, Gearmáinis agus Iodáilis. Thosaigh sí ar a Gaelscolaíocht i Nn Bheaga gan Ghaeilge ar bith, ach ba léir súil i bhfad go raibh bua faoi leith aici, agus chualathas í timpeall na scoile ag labhairt go muiníneach le múinteoirí agus scoláirí eile. De réir a chéile thosaigh sí ar Bhéala a labhairt de dheasca tionchar a timpeallachta, mar d’fhreastail sí ar réamhscoil Béarla, ansin thosaigh sí ar Ghaeilge i Nn. Bheaga. Téann sí chuig na Gearmáine agus na hIodáile go minic chun am a chaitheamh lena gaolta agus a cairde, labhraíonn sí Gearmáinis ar an nguthán go minic lena seantuistí freisin. Féachann sí ar scannáin, éisteann sí le ceol agus léann sí i nGearmáinis agus in Iodáilis freisin.

Tá tuiscint leathan ag Giulia ar chultúir éagsúla agus ar na traidisiúin atá i dtíortha lasmuigh d’Éire, mar gheall ar a cumas i dteangacha. Foghlaimeoir Teanga na Bliana 2016

“Alexander shows exceptional interest and ability in language learning. He is 16 years old and has already acquired an impressive grasp of several languages.

In addition to his mother tongue English, Alex has to date learned: Maltese, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Chinese, Filipino/Tagalog, Ukrainian, Danish, Latin and Irish. In June 2016 he sat Junior Certificate exams in Irish, Spanish, German and Italian. He has learned Irish and Spanish in school but studied German and Italian independently. He has already reached a very high level of competence in all these languages.

Alexander’s paternal grandmother is Maltese and lives on the island of Gozo. With her encouragement and support, Alexander has been learning Maltese for a number of years. He plans to spend a period of time in a secondary school in Malta during Transition Year to boost his language skills and immerse himself in the rich cultural heritage of Malta. He hopes to sit a Leaving Certificate exam in Maltese in 2019. He is proud to represent Malta and Maltese language on Language and Culture Day which takes place annually in our school.

Sport provides a further resource for language learning. Alexander has learned Dutch from players on his cricket team. During Transition Year he intends to learn Hindi with help from his Indian team mates.

In 2015 Alex competed in the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad and was placed 18th out of 1200 competitors. This is a challenging test of problem-solving in logic, linguistics and language. He also competed in the 2016 competition and was placed 9th in the main competition (out of the 1,278 participants) and 1st in the Junior Section.

In collaboration with two other students Alex developed a website designed to help speakers of Mandarin Chinese learn English. This project was prepared for entry in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition 2015.

Alexander’s passion for languages has opened pathways to new friendships and cultural encounters with people from diverse backgrounds. Grappling with the lexical and grammatical challenges of language learning has also developed cognitive abilities and intellectual maturation. Alexander is an exemplary role model and inspiration to others who are interested in extending their repertoire of language skills.”

“Tá suim ar leith ag Alexander i dteangacha a fhoghlaim agus atá ardchumas aige. Tá sé 16 bliana d‘aois agus tá cumas fíormhaith bainte amach i roinnt teangacha cheana féin.

De bhreis ar a theanga dhúchais, an Béarla, tá iad seo a leanas foghlamtha aige do dtí seo: Máltais, an Spáinnis, an Ghearmáinis, an Iodáilis, an Ollainnis, an tSínis, an Fhilipínis/Tagálaigis, an Úcráinis, an Danmhairgis, an Laidin agus an Ghaeilge. I mí an Mheithimh 2016 ghlac sé scrúduithe an Teastais Shóisearaigh sa Ghaeilge, sa Spáinnis agus san Iodáilis. D’fhoghlaim sé an Ghaeilge agus an Spáinnis ar scoil ach rinne sé staidéar ar an nGearmáinis agus ar an Iodáilis go neamhspleách. Tá ardchumas bainte amach aige sna teangacha seo go léir cheana féin.

Máltach is ea máthair athar Alexander agus tá cónaí uirthi ar oileán Gozo. Mar thoradh ar an spreagadh agus an tacaíocht a thug sí dó tá Alexander ag foghlaim na Máltaise le roinnt blianta anuas. Tá ar intinn aige tréimhse ama a chaitheamh in iarbhunscoil i Málta le linn na hidirbhliana chun cur lena chuid scileanna teanga agus chun tumadh isteach in oidhreacht chultúrtha shaibhir Mhálta. Tá sé ag súil le dul faoi scrúdú Máltaise san Ardteistiméireacht in 2019. Is ábhar mórtais dó a bheith ina ionadaí do Mhálta agus don Mháltais ar Lá Teanga agus Cultúir a reáchtáiltear go bliantúil inár scoil.

Is deis eile chun teangacha a fhoghlaim é spórt. D’fhoghlaim Alexander an Ollainnis ó imreoirí ina fhoireann cruicéid. Le linn na hIdirbhliana tá sé i gceist aige Hiondúis a fhoghlaim. Chuige seo gheobhaidh sé cabhair óna chomhimreoirí Indiacha.

Sa bhliain 2015 chuaigh Alex sa chomórtas Oilimpiad Teangeolaíochta Uile-Éireann agus bhain sé amach an 18ú háit i ngrúpa 1200 iomaitheoir. Tástáil dhúshlánach é seo ina bhfuil fadhbanna le réiteach i loighic, teangeolaíocht agus teanga. Chuaigh sé sa chomórtas 2016 leis agus bhain sé an 9ú háit amach sa phríomhchomórtas (as grúpa 1,278 rannpháirtí) agus an 1ú háit sa Rannóg Shóisearach.

D’fhorbair Alex suíomh gréasáin i gcomhar le scoláirí eile chun cabhrú le cainteoirí na Mandairínise Béarla a fhoghlaim. Ullmhaíodh an togra seo i gcomhair iontrála chuig Comórtas an Eolaí Óig BT in 2015.

Tá cosáin oscailte ag grá Alexander do theangacha chuig cairdis nua agus teagmhálacha cultúrtha le daoine ó chúlraí éagsúla. Mar thoradh ar dhul i ngleic le dúshláin foclóireachta agus gramadaí a ghabhann le foghlaim teanga tá a chumais chogaíocha agus a aibíocht intleachtach curtha chun cinn aige. Is rólchuspa den chéad scoth é Alexander agus is inspioráid do dhaoine eile é ar suim leo cur lena stór scileanna teanga.”

“Bláithin discovered languages in Transition Year, and her passion for language learning inspired her to stay in school. She worked extremely hard to get three A1 grades in the Leaving Certificate in Spanish, Japanese, and Russian. She did Japanese as an extra subject in school, got up early every Saturday morning to dedicate herself to the study of Russian, and found Spanish friends with whom she interacted exclusively in Spanish.

She studied intensively to learn the grammar of these languages, using many different tools on her journey including apps, watching soap operas and cartoons, as well as talking to native speakers at every opportunity - despite some discouragement along the way! She has also sought out and availed of exchanges to Japan and Ukraine.

Bláithin went to school in St Raphaela’s Secondary School in Stillorgan where she studied Japanese and Spanish and attended Post-Primary Languages Initiative classes in Russian on Saturdays. She is currently studying Russian and Modern Irish in Trinity College Dublin. Her proficiency in Russian was high enough that she was allowed to commence her studies at second year level upon entrance to college. In the future, she would like to have a language-related career and work as an interpreter.

Bláithin is articulate and conveys her message in a personal and moving way. She is a motivational communicator and an ideal ambassador for young people. She provides evidence that hard work and a creative approach to learning produces rewards. She also gives hope to students that although school may not currently meet their needs, there are new territories out there that they just haven’t discovered yet!”

D’éirigh sí go luath gach maidin Dé Sathairn chun staidéar a dhéanamh ar an Rúisis agus fuair sí cairde ón Spáinn nach labhair sí ach an Spáinnis leo. Rinne sí dianstaidéar chun gramadach na dteangacha seo a fhoghlaim. Bhain sí úsáid as mórán uirlisí éagsúla agus í i mbun foghlama. ranganna an Tionscnamh Teanga Iarbhunscoile san Rúisis Dé Sathairn. I láthair na huaire tá sí ag staidéar na Rúisise agus na Nua-Ghaeilge i gColáiste na Tríonóide i mBaile Átha Cliath. Bhí a cumas Rúisise ard a dhóthain go bhfuair sí cead tús a chur lena cuid staidéir ag leibhéil na dara bliana nuair a chuaigh sí isteach sa choláiste. Amach anseo ba mhaith léi dul le gairm a bhaineann le teangacha agus obair mar theangaire.

Duine deasbhéalach is ea Bláithín agus cuireann sí a teachtaireacht in iúl ar shlí phearsanta chorraitheach. Cumarsáidí inspreagtha agus ambasadóir den scoth do dhaoine óga is ea í. Tugann sí fianaise go bhfuil luach saothair ar obair chrua agus cur chuige cruthaitheach i leith foghlama. Foghlaimeoir Teanga na Bliana 2016

“Tatjana Petrova was born in Siberia. A proud Russian woman, and former ballerina, her life changed completely when, on the death of her husband, she found herself middle-aged and with a daughter to support through college. To her daughter’s dismay, she decided to travel to Ireland to find work. As she had never travelled outside the Soviet Union and could not speak a word of English, the future was uncertain. Tatjana started her life here working in the cleaning industry. She first came to the attention of the senior librarian at the Open Learning Centre when she spent entire days studying in the centre. At the time the centre had outdated cassettes, but Tatjana, undaunted by this huge challenge, studied with a fierce passion and determination. When the courses went online, she was the first to try the new system. She even demonstrated it to the Minister for Integration!

Through sheer hard work and application she worked her way from basic English (which she learned through the Latin alphabet) up to advanced and business levels. As her English

language skills improved so did her life chances. She found work in A-Wear, who found her to be such a hard worker and charming individual that they transferred her to River Island when A-Wear went into liquidation. She works there to this day, where she is willing and able to do shifts starting at 6am. Tatjana found love here, and she and her partner spent many happy years together. He introduced her to Irish culture and language, which she embraced with enthusiasm.

They joined An Óige, went hill walking, swimming, and exploring the countryside. He accompanied her when she received her citizenship several years ago - one of the best days of her life. Sadly she received a bitter blow when he suddenly died of cancer, leaving her heartbroken. She has slowly re-built her life. She loves current affairs, and her favourite broadcaster is George Hook. She celebrates her saint`s name day and St Patrick’s Day with equal vigour. She has supported herself all her life in Ireland, and insists on working at 66. She is simply amazing!”

Rinne sí cinneadh taisteal go hÉireann chun obair a fháil, rud a chuir díomá mór ar a hiníon. Ní raibh sí riamh lasmuigh den Aontas Sóivéadach agus ní raibh focal Béarla aici, dá bhrí sin ní raibh aon chinnteacht aici faoina raibh amach roimpi. Is le hobair chrua agus le díograis agus tiomantas a threabh sí ar aghaidh ó Bhéarla bunúsach (a d’fhoghlaim sí tríd an aibítir Laidine) go ardleibhéal agus leibhéal gnó. De réir mar a tháinig feabhas ar a cuid scileanna teanga tháinig feabhas ar a cuid

deiseanna saoil. Fuair sí obair in A-Wear, áit ina rabhthas an-shásta léi de bharr gur oibrí iontach agus duine taitneamhach í. Mar sin aistríodh chuig River Island í nuair chuaigh A-Wear faoi leachtú. Tá sí ag obair ansin i gcónaí, áit a bhfuil sí sásta sealanna a ghlacadh a thosaíonn ag a 6 ar maidin. Thit Tatjana i ngrá anseo agus chaith sí agus a páirtí a lán blianta le chéile go sona sásta. Chuir sé in aithne do chultúr agus teanga na hÉireann í agus ghlac sí leis go díograiseach.

Chuadar isteach in An Óige, thug siad faoi shiúlóidí sna sléibhte, ag snámh agus ag taiscéaladh na tírdhreacha.Chuaigh sé léi nuair a fuair sí a saoránacht roinnt blianta ó shin. Lá de na laethanta is fearr ina saol ab ea é. Ba bhuille trom é nuair a fuair sé bás tobann ón ailse, rud a bhris a croí. Go mall, de réir a chéile tháinig sí chuici. Is aoibhinn léi cúrsaí reatha agus is é George Hook an craoltóir is fearr léi. Ceiliúrann sí lá ainm a naoimh féin agus Lá Fhéile Pádraig leis an bhfuinneamh céanna. Bhain sí slí bheatha amach ar feadh a saoil ar fad in Éirinn agus ní bheadh sí sásta éirí as an obair in aois 66. Bean iontach ar fad is ea í!”

Lá Eorpach na dTeangacha

At the initiative of the Council of Europe, Strasbourg, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated on 26 September every year since 2001.

The day aims to:

• alertthepublicto the importance of language learning• increase awareness and appreciation of all the languages

spoken in Europe• encouragelifelonglanguage learning.

Throughout Europe, 800 million Europeans represented in the Council of Europe’s 47 member states are encouraged to learn more languages, at any age, in and out of school. Linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of our continent, and the Council of Europe promotes plurilingualism all over Europe.

On the day itself, a range of events are organised across Europe: activities for and with children, television and radio programmes, language classes and conferences. National authorities and the various partners are given a free hand to organise activities.

Léargas is Ireland’s National Relay for the European Day of Languages and every year we send out packs with posters, stickers, promotional materials and details of our competition.

Last year we held a “Day in the Life of…” competition, where language learners, with the help of their language and history teachers, were invited to choose a person from a period of history relating to the language they are learning and write a diary entry for them. The winners, from Lucan Community College, invited Tomi Reichental, a Holocaust survivor who lives in Dublin, to the school to speak to pupils, teachers and parents and then produced diary entries which they bound together beautifully into a diary. As their prize the whole class headed off to Belgium to experience languages, history and the Christmas Markets.

This year, our competition is called “Climate Change in …”. It invites pupils, with the help of their language and geography teachers, to look at climate change in a country where the language they are learning is spoken. They have to find out how climate change is viewed there, what effects it has had and what is being done to prevent it, and put together a report on it.

The winning entry will see pupils and teachers heading off to a European country to explore the links between languages and geography. The closing date for entries is Friday 28 October 2016. For further details see www.leargas.ie/programmes/languages.

Is iad na spriocanna atá leis an lá ná:

• aird an phobail a dhíriú ar an tábhacht atá le foghlaim teangacha

• feasacht agus léirthuiscint ar gach teanga a labhraítear san Eoraip a mhéadú

• foghlaim teangacha ar feadh an tsaoil a spreagadh.

Ar fud na hEorpa spreagtar 800 milliún Eorpach a bhfuil ionadaíocht á déanamh orthu i 47 mballstát de chuid Chomhairle na hEorpa chun níos mó teangacha a fhoghlaim in aois ar bith, laistigh den scoil agus lasmuigh di. Uirlis is ea éagsúlacht teanga chun níos mó tuiscint idirchultúrtha a bhaint amach mar phríomhghné d’oidhreacht chultúrtha shaibhir ár n-ilchríche. Cuireann Comhairle na hEorpa ilteangachas chun cinn ar fud na hEorpa.

Ar an lá féin eagraítear réimse imeachtaí ar fud na hEorpa: gníomhaíochtaí do pháistí agus le páistí, cláir teilifíse agus raidió, ranganna teanga agus comhdhálacha. Fágtar faoi na húdaráis náisiúnta agus na comhpháirtithe féin na gníomhaíochtaí a eagrú de réir mar is maith leo é.

Is é Léargas an eagraíocht Náisiúnta Athsheachadta do Lá Eorpach na dTeangacha. Gach bliain seolaimid amach pacáistí de phóstaeir, greamaitheoirí, ábhar bolscaireachta agus mionsonraí faoinár gcomórtas.

An bhliain seo caite reáchtálamar comórtas “Lá i saol....”. Tugadh cuireadh d’fhoghlaimeoirí teanga mar aon lena múinteoirí teanga agus staire, duine a roghnú ó thréimhse staire a bhaineann leis an teanga atá á fhoghlaim acu agus dialann a bhreacadh dó nó di. Thug na buaiteoirí cuireadh do Tomi Reichental, duine a tháinig slán ón Holocaust, agus a bhfuil cónaí air i mBaile Átha Cliath, teacht dá scoil chun labhairt leis na scoláirí, na múinteoirí agus na tuismitheoirí agus ansin rinne siad iontrálacha dialainne a cheangail siad le chéile mar dhialann álainn. Mar dhuais fuair an rang ar fad turas go dtí an Bheilg chun éisteacht le teangacha, aithne a chur ar stair agus tabhairt faoi haontaí na Nollag.

Is é teideal ár gcomórtais i mbliana ná “Athrú Aeráide i....” Tugtar cuireadh do scoláirí féachaint ar athrú aeráide i dtír ina labhraítear an teanga atá á foghlaim acu, le cabhair óna múinteoirí teanga agus tíreolais. Mar dhuais don iontráil bhuaiteach beidh na scoláirí agus na múinteoirí ag imeacht chuig tír Eorpach chun naisc idir teangacha agus tíreolas a thaiscéaladh. The ECML is a Council of Europe institution based in Graz, Austria. In cooperation with the Council’s Language Policy Unit, the centre functions as a catalyst for reform in the teaching and learning of languages. It assists its stakeholders in member states in bringing language education policies and practices together.

The centre operates programmes in four year cycles. The current programme is ‘Languages at the Heart of Learning 2016-2019’. At the beginning of each programme experts are invited to submit project proposals. They can also submit applications to work on projects in specific areas of interest. Projects that are selected for the programme are given support from the ECML and hold their own workshops. These are opportunities to bring together experts in that area from each of the 33 member states.

The upcoming programme will cover:

There are National Contact Points in each of the member states and Léargas is the National Contact Point in Ireland. Anyone interested in applying for a particular workshop should contact Léargas.

Léargas

Léargas is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1986. We manage national and international programmes in education, youth and community work, and vocational education and training. Our programmes connect people in different communities and countries so that we can learn from each other and create a better future together, and aim to bring an international dimension to the work of education, training, and youth and community organisations across Ireland.

In addition to supporting the European Language Label, European Day of Languages and the ECML, our programmes include Causeway (for youth exchanges between the islands of Britain and Ireland), EPALE (an online platform for Adult Learning professionals) and IAESTE (for third-level students of technical subjects). We are the National Agency for the European Union programme Erasmus+, which aims to raise the standards of teaching, training, learning and youth work across Europe. The National Centre for Guidance in Education is also part of our network. Léargas is wholly owned by the Department of Education and Skills.

In 2016 we celebrate 30 years in operation and in that time we have built a national and international reputation for supporting international collaboration and exchange. We have also built a reputation for a friendly and supportive approach to programme applicants and beneficiaries.
