New processes for the fermentative production of glycolipid biosurfactants andsialylated carbohydrates

From 2015-08-01 to 2018-07-31, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

This project aims to develop new processes and solve bottlenecks in the fermentative production of biosurfactants andspecialty carbohydrates. Specifically, the project targets the development of innovative fermentation processes toproduce the following compounds:1. Glycolipid biosurfactants. The project targets four distinct classes of biosurfactants, specifically rhamnolipids, sophorolipids, xylolipids and mannosylerythritol-lipids with a wide range of application fie lds.2. Specialty carbohydrates. Specifically, the project targets s ialylated oligosaccharides, a class of very complex HumanMilk Oligosaccharides that find application as a neutraceutical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic ingredient.

For both product lines, microbial producer strains will be developed through metabolic engineering. The fermentationprocess and down-stream processing will be developed and optimized in order to obtain an industrial process. Secondgeneration technology based on lignocellulos ic substrates will also be developed. Sufficient amounts of the newproducts will be produced for application testing, in order to evaluate their market potential in a wide range ofapplication fie lds. The technical, economic, environmental and social sustainability of the process over the whole valuechain from biomass to product application will also be assessed, with an emphasis on identifying and addressing thebottlenecks in the innovation chain. A valorisation plan will be drafted to complete the innovation process.

The project consortium has all the required players to obtain the expected impact: RTO's to address the researchchallenges in this project, an open innovation pilot plant to optimize and scale up the new processes, three biotechSMEs and three large industries to ensure the exploitation of the project results . In addition, two user groups (one foreach product line) consisting of end-user companies are involved in the project.

Marine Investment for the Blue Economy

From 2015-03-01 to 2016-08-31, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

The primary objective of this MARIBE BG5 project is to identify the most promis ing business models in the Blue Growth(BG) economy (in particular multi-purpose platforms). Plans will be developed to overcome their challenges, proposehow these models can be advanced to large scale pilot stage, and test the feasibility of the recommended businessmodels. The pilots will be enabled by securing support from the investment community and liais ing with EC toimplement the outcomes of the project and continue funding support via H2020. The final aim of this project to unlockthe sustainable growth and jobs potential of BG.

A new consortium has been created with connections to H2-Ocean, TROPOS and MERMAID having with the desireddegree of independence, impartiality to ensure neutral business model assessment. The partnership comprises thefull spectrum of academic and SME partners, including expertise from all re levant BG sectors, as well as FAO as keyglobal partner to secure Trans-Atlantic pilot, and Business Models Inc. as the business model expert.

Business models will first be mapped according to best practice methodology, cognisant of their value chains. Thetechnical and non-technical challenges of the business will be measured based on their life cycle stage and proposalsmade for their mitigation. Key stakeholders from all sectors of Blue Economy to BG will be engaged, as well as keyinvestors.Following these reviews and engagements, four Think Tank workshops will be organised to envis ion innovative newbusiness models, in particular considering multi-purpose platforms. The final workshop will then define implementationplans for best business model for each of the four basins.

Outcome from the project will include toolkits and guidelines for stakeholders and investment community with regardsto the BG socio-economic trends and technical and non-technical challenges as well as reports on best businessmodels for BG.

Processing Underutilised Low value sugarbeet Pulp into VALUE added products(PULP2VALUE)

From 2015-07-01 to 2019-06-30, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

Sugar beet pulp (SBP) accounts for approx. 13 million tonnes in Europe and is a major res idual stream from the sugarbeet industry, which is currently valorised as low value feed and/or green gas. In order to increase the value of its s idestreams, PULP2VALUE developed multiple extraction techniques to isolate more valuable products from this largefraction of sugar beet pulp. Roughly 65% of the dry matter mass can be isolated as high value products being:microcellulose fibers (MCF) (33%), arabinose (16%) and galacturonic acid (16%).

The overall objective of this project is to further establish the value chains based on MCF, arabinose (Ara) andgalacturonic acid (GalA). By demonstrating an integrated and cost-effective cascading biorefinery system to refinesugar beet pulp, Cosun aims to s ignificantly increase (20-50 times) the value of the sugar beet pulp by demonstratingapplications for approximately 65% of its mass in high value markets.

For each of these products PULP2VALUE identified multiple product market combinations (PMC’s). For the MCF fractionapplication supply chains towards detergents, personal care, oil & gas, paints & coatings and composites aredeveloped. Throughout the years Cosun developed a pilot facility in which the state-of-the-art unit of operations weretested. Together with partners, Cosun is now planning to optimize, integrate and scale-up these processes to ademonstration scale to further supply product development in order to establish long lasting supply chains.

The PULP2VALUE will target 9 new value chains resulting in a market potential of at least 350.000 tons and a potentialrevenue of 200 million euro. The PULP2VALUE makes available a mild and environmentally friendly biorefinery processfor beet pulp compared to other biobased and foss il products. It will spur rural development in sugar beet growingdistricts by connecting them in new cross-sectoral value chains with the chemical and food industry.

ValChem - Value added Chemical building blocks and lignin from wood

From 2015-07-01 to 2019-06-30, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

"ValChem demonstrates the technical and economic viability of sustainable and integrated process from wood to aselected platform chemical and lignin based performance chemicals . ValChem will demonstrate that this process canproduce wood-based chemicals that are competitive with identical or s imilar-in-application products based on foss il rawmaterials in terms of quality and production cost.

ValChem utilizes existing demonstration plants of the project partners. All process parts have been demonstrated atleast in pilot scale before. ""Wood to sugars and crude lignin process"" has been verified in demonstration scale forethanol production, but in this project it will be combined with ""sugar to platform chemical"" process, for which thecompany has been using first generation sugars so far. Crude lignin from wood dis integration process will be upgradedto be suitable for reactive applications (different types of reactive res ins). The process will demonstrate thevalorization of over 75 % of the wood raw material.

Pre-marketing and application tests are done at potential customers. Lignin based performance chemicals ’ focus is inhigh value added reactive applications (value >6 times higher than lignin energy value). The largest markets for thetargeted platform chemical are unsaturated polyester res ins, paints and coatings, and industrial (heat-transfer and de-icing) and personal care (value 2-3 times higher than current products).

Potential plants based on this technology will be located in rural areas due to feedstock availability. Only sustainablysourced wood will be used. The sustainable forestry and wood-harvesting will be proven by internationally acceptedPEFC and FSC certificates. The ValChem project will be a boost in the Biobased chemical development and open up forfurther actors to invest in and continue the development for a sustainable industrial sector."

Nutrient recovery from biobased Waste for Fertilizer production

From 2015-07-01 to 2018-12-31, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

Biowaste valorisation is an attractive approach in the framework of the EU Waste Management policies and thedevelopment of a circular economy. Waste from biostreams and different biobased sources are being under-utilised aspotential resource of valuable compounds. Fertilisers play an important role as suppliers of nutrients relying on theirproduction heavily on foss il mineral resources. European Fertiliser industry is besides very dependent on imports ofthese raw materials , being vulnerable to supply and pricing policies.Main objective of the proposal is to build up a breakthrough concept of Fertiliser Industry, strengthening Europeancompetitiveness and boosting the biobased economy potential, through the development of a new value chain, whichwill achieve turning solid and liquid res idues, specifically ashes of different origins and livestock effluents, into highquality valuable products, a new generation of fertilisers. NEWFERT will focus on a viable and cost-effective industrialnutrient recycling scheme, developing new biorefining technologies aimed at increasing nutrient recovery ratios andmitigating environmental and socio-economical impact of the current fertilisers by replacing non renewable and foss ilnutrients with biobased materials in their composition. Projected benefits also include substantial energy savings andCO2 emiss ions reduction. NEWFERT aims to decrease raw material dependency, prevent resource depletion andreduce the environmental impact increasing s ignificantly the Fertiliser industry sustainability. The work organisation hasbeen designed to link and pursue a successful industrial integration supported by a solid life-cycle cost analys is . Thestrategy of the work plan is based on 8 workpackages. NEWFERT consortium is lead by FERTIBERIA and composed by abalanced set of 6 partners from 4 European Union member countries: biobased industries, SMEs, RTOs and academicinstitutions covering nutrients recovery from biobased waste fie ld.

Cost effective lignin-based carbon fibres for innovative light-weight applications

From 2015-07-01 to 2019-06-30, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

The overall objectives are to demonstrate a new biobased, renewable and economically viable carbon fibre (CF)precursor – lignin – produced in Europe with European raw material and to develop conditions for its processing into CFand structural CF composites. The target is a cost-effective biobased CF for use in reinforced composites deliveringsufficient enough strength properties for large-volume automotive applications. Reducing vehicle weight is a decis ivefactor for successful fulfilment of the future targets in EU regulations regarding CO2 emiss ions from the automotivesector. CF reinforced plastics has been introduced as a low-weight material replacing/complementing steel andaluminium. Today’s CF production is based on use of a petroleum-based raw material, PAN, which is costly due to thestarting precursor and the process for turning it into CF. Most PAN used in Europe is imported. The automotive sectorhas identified a need for a cheaper lower-grade CF to meet the demands of components in normal consumer cars.Lignin from kraft pulp mills is a green, sustainable, abundant and cost-efficient new potential CF precursor. TheEuropean pulp and paper industry has a need for additional revenues due to the global competition and the decline inprinting and writing paper. Successful lignin applications like CF will create new business opportunities and new jobsalso in rural areas where the pulp mills are located. The development of lignin-based CF is still in laboratory scale andmaterial properties meeting high-quality product demands is the main challenge. Now a new technology in commercialoperation makes it possible to produce lignin with new properties, higher purity and with less impact on the pulp milloperation. The idea is to tailor kraft lignin properties already in the lignin separation/upgrading and optimise the ligninfor target automotive applications. The consortium has unique competence through the complete value chain to realisethis new concept.

PROVIDESProject ref erence: 668970

PROcesses for Value added fibres by Innovative Deep Eutectic Solvents

From 2015-07-01 to 2018-06-30, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

The main objective of the PROVIDES project is to develop a radically new, sustainable and techno-economically feasiblepulping technology for wood and agro-based lignocellulose raw materials based on deep eutectic solvents (DES), a newclass of natural solvents which have the unique ability to dissolve and thus mildly fractionate lignin, hemicellulose andcellulose at low temperature and atmospheric pressure for further processing into high added value materials andchemicals .The aim is to transfer recent scientific findings in novel lignin dissolving DES to process concept level that can beevaluated against current pulping processes. The technological breakthrough expected through the development ofsuch new DES pulping technology could reduce process energy intensity by at least 40% and investment costs by 50%compared to traditional chemical pulping technology. In paralle l, the development of efficient novel cellulose-dissolving DES and other DESs to process lignocellulosematerials , starting with paper for recycling, is aimed at with focus on sustainability in selecting DES chemicalcomponents and technical and economic applicability of the solvent system.PROVIDES will create both fundamental and industry driven technological knowledge based on lab to bench/pilot scaleexperimentation, through: mapping and selection of most effective DES families; investigating processes and processtechnology options, including DES regeneration and recycling, in order to define full industrial processes that wouldisolate high quality cellulose/fibres, lignin and hemicelluloses; providing products for industrial evaluation; establishingtechnical data to evaluate industrial feasibility and integration; performing life-cycle oriented assessment ofenvironmental and socio-economic performance; assessing impacts in terms of energy and cost reductions as well asnew high added value applications PROVIDES could provide to the pulp and paper industry sector.

ProBIOProject ref erence: 652683

Professional support to the uptake of bioeconomy RD results towards market, further research and policy for a more competitive European bioeconomy

From 2015-03-01 to 2017-08-31, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

ProBIO is a support action directly benefiting consortia of FP7 KBBE and H2020 bioeconomy. The overall objective is two-fold: 1. To support the flow of knowledge-based bioeconomy project results from research to market, as well as back to R&I.2. To foster the networking and knowledge exchange between different European bioeconomy initiatives under H2020and FP7 and the most important players in the fie ld thus rais ing awareness towards policy makers and engaging thegeneral public.

To achieve its objectives, ProBIO screens all 411 KBBE projects for results , describes them in interaction with the KBBEconsortia, and finally class ifies each result according to its nature. The results will be of different technological maturitylevel: some will be mature for direct market introduction, others need further development to reach a higher TRL, andsome are not technological results , but knowledge and instruments of re levance to policy makers. The ProBIO experts take this diverse nature and maturity level of research results into account and support each typeof result with dedicated profess ional coaching and tools with a view to:a. Accelerating market entry through business coaching of the most promis ing R&D resultsb. Facilitating the flow of knowledge into new R&I projects in order to reach a higher TRL levelc. Feeding policy-relevant results into the political process to inform policy making

ProBIO also foresees a range of events and communication activities supporting knowledge exchange and linkage ofdifferent actors along the bioeconomy value chains and making use of synergies through networking.

The multi-disciplinary team of the ProBIO consortium is built around highly specialised green innovation consultanciesand a European expert group who together have an outstanding track record in promoting the uptake of results frompublic research. Additional thematic expertise is ensured by two technical centres, and communication is in profess ionalhands, too.

BLUE IODINEProject ref erence: 663292

Boost BLUE economy trough market uptake an innovative seaweed bioextract forIODINE fortification

From 2015-02-01 to 2015-07-31, closed project

Project details

Objective

The main objective of the project is to produce in a cost effective way new high quality seaweed iodine products andbecome market leaders in this niche market. The expected revenue in 5 years will be 3,3 million euro and we expectto increase our staff in 20 people. Iodine deficiency is one of the three most common nutritional deficiencies and is spread all over the world and 40% ofthe world’s population remains at risk for iodine deficiency.Seaweed is the most reliable source of natural iodine. However, seaweed creation is dominated by larger players, mainly from Asia. Our strategy is not to compete with them, but target for a niche market that is yet incipient - highquality seaweed creation for the development of natural protein products, rich in essential aminoacids and naturaliodine.

The seaweeds created in the fish aquaculture farms are autochthonous from our region and have a high iodine contentand a high degree of stability. They are better than the products in the market (iodine composition 30% higher andvitamin C 300% higher than usually commercialized seaweed products) and with our already tested innovativebiorefinary process we will be able to put the product in the market at a competitive price (10% to 30% lower).Anutritional analys is has been done. The biorefinary process has been developed for small production. This has now tobe better defined in order to process a higher amount of products.

UBQ is a high-tech company, and are specialized in the production of natural extracts obtained from marine seaweed. For the 1st stage project, the objectives are to study the: 1.1. Refinement of the nutritional and biochemistry analys is of the selected seaweed1.2. Requirements for upscale the innovative biorefinary process for a higher production 2.1. Refinement of the Market analys is at EU and global level 2.2. Business Plan, including defining in detail the prices, commercialization strategy, possible partnership.

NOVEL, SUSTAINABLE MARINE BIO-SURFACTANT / BIO-EMULSIFIERS FOR COMMERCIALEXPLOITATION

From 2015-09-01 to 2020-08-31, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

Surfactants and emuls ifiers constitute an important class of chemical agents that are widely used in almost everysector of modern industry. The huge market demand is currently met almost exclus ively by synthetic, mainlypetroleum-based, chemical products, which are usually non-biodegradable and mostly toxic or GM plant based products(used in foods), which are undesirable by some end-users. Their biologically produced counterparts (i.e. bio-surfactantsand bio-emuls ifiers) offer more green sustainable alternatives. This has led to a number of manufactures, looking forways to increase competitiveness through searching for underexploited sources such as the marine environment. Ourobjectives are to develop (1) innovative approaches in discovering, characteriz ing and producing novel marine-derivedbio-surfactants from a large bacterial collection (greater than 500 strains) housed at Heriot Watt Univers ity, originallyisolated from various coastal and open ocean waters around the world, (2) novel, economic, and eco-friendly end-products with commercial applications in order to replace synthetic counterparts , and (3) to demonstrate thefunctionality of new product development for commercial exploitation. Our collection consists of novel bacterial species, originally isolated for their ability to degrade oils , with proven promise in this respect. For this reason, our consortium(consisting of academic institutions, industrial companies and end-users) offering a wide range of expertise, willaddress the technical bottlenecks for meeting our objectives, namely those of marine resource identification, sustainable supply, discovery pipeline and efficient production in biological systems. The relevance of our proposal tothe work programme is underlined by its expected impact in increasing efficiency of discovery pipelines, thedevelopment of more economic and eco-friendly end-products and finally in contributing to the implementation of theobjectives of the EU Blue Growth.

Sea-More-Yield: A Blue Biotechnology Solution for the Reduction of Pod Shatter inBio-Oil Producing Crops

From 2016-12-01 to 2018-11-30, Grant Agreement s igned

Project details

Objective

Sea-More-Yield is a revolutionary non-transgenic platform for trait introduction via s ingle 1.5L/Ha foliar spray, enablingimmediate expression of desirable anti-shatter traits in OSR. This pioneering technology enables growers for the firsttime to modulate OSR pod physiology to minimise seed loss and yie ld risk with an early season spray (in the absenceof pods). With a global population set to reach 9 billion by 2050, OSR is a key crop for human and animal consumptionand is central to mitigating a future food and/or energy security cris is . OSR due to its re latively recent domesticationsuffers from a number of defects which limits its success as a modern day crop. Fully mature pods of oilseed rape areextremely prone to opening, resulting in seed loss (pod shatter). Typical losses vary between 15% and 25% of thepotential yie ld, but reductions of up to 50% were estimated in seasons when weather conditions were poor prior to andduring harvest. A reduction in the tendency of pods to opening is the number one trait sought by farmers and wouldserve to increase the proportion of the yie ld recovered by the combine harvester and thereby improve productionefficiency and sustainability of OSR as alternative food and energy source. To address this industry-limiting problem,SMY offers a unique blue technology that modulates OSR pod physiology to control unsynchronized pod shatter leadingto recovery of an additional 20% of the yie ld potential.

Platform of bioeconomy ERA-NET Actions

From 2015-03-01 to 2018-02-28, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

PLATFORM brings together ERA-NETs in the area of the bioeconomy. The current proposal will continue and expand thework of FP7 PLATFORM (2012-2014) with the following objectives: to further increase collaboration among actors, tofoster inclus iveness, to increase capacities for efficient and effective ERA-NETs, and to inform research policy making.

FP7 PLATFORM organised inspiring annual events, dedicated workshops, a master class for call managers, fruitful two-way interaction with the Commission, the EIP AGRI and with the BBI-JU, and produced a comprehensive book about thebioeconomy ERA-NETs and their activities. Surveys, analys is and events also engaged ERA-NETs from neighbouringthemes with bioeconomy relevance, JPIs Oceans and FACCE, SCAR WGs, and self-sustained ERA-NETs.

PLATFORM2 will build on these activities and will further strengthen mutual learning, maximise synergies and increasecoordination. PLATFORM2 will expand the network to new ERA-NET actions (Cofund), to more JPIs and will also seekstronger interaction with SCAR. On the website, a searchable database on bioeconomy ERA-NET joint calls will beconstructed, including statistics and impact assessments, such as on leverage. Data may flow into other datarepositories, e.g. an EIP Agri database on projects in the area of agriculture. A World Café workshop is scheduled toponder new, sustainable and alternative models for cooperation between public research programmes. PLATFORM2 willmake an inventory of alignment actions taken by ERA-NETs. The series of Annual Events will be continued and enableactors to discuss emerging cooperation needs, opportunities and tools . PLATFORM2 will foster inclus iveness in all itswork, in particular by a master class directed at new Member States and sessions at the Annual Events on improvingboth involvement and performance. Capacities will be increased by sharing experience and by way of master classeson planning and managing (Cofund) calls , as well as through evaluation and monitoring of ERA-NETs. The reflections andrecommendations will be summarised in policy briefs .

CELBICONProject ref erence: 679050

Cost-effective CO2 conversion into chemicals via combination of Capture,ELectrochemical and BI-ochemical CONversion technologies

From 2016-03-01 to 2019-08-31, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

CELBICON aims at the development, from TRL3 to TRL5, of new CO2-to-chemicals technologies, conjugating at oncesmall-scale for an effective decentralized market penetration, high efficiency/yie ld, low cost, robustness, moderateoperating temperatures and low maintenance costs. In line with the reference Topic text, these technologies will bridge cost-effective CO2 capture and purification from theatmosphere through sorbents (with efficient heat integration of the CO2 desorption step with the subsequent processstages), with electrochemical convers ion of CO2 (via PEM electrolys is concepts, promoting CO2 reduction at theircathode in combination with a fruitful oxidation carried out s imultaneously at the anode), followed by bioreactors carryingout the fermentation of the CO2-reduction intermediates (syngas, C1 water-soluble molecules) to form valuableproducts (bioplastics like Poly-Hydroxy-Alkanoates - PHA -, isoprene, lactic acid, methane, etc.) as well as effectiveroutes for their recovery from the process outlet streams.A distinctive feature of the CELBICON approach is the innovative interplay and advances of key technologies brought inby partners (high-tech SMEs & companies, research centres) to achieve unprecedented yie ld and efficiency resultsalong the following two processing lines: i) High pressure process line tailored to the production of a PHA bioplastic andpressurized methane via intermediate electrochemical generation of pressurized syngas followed by specificfermentation steps; ii) Low pressure processing line focused on the production of value-added chemicals byfermentation of CO2-reduction water-soluble C1 intermediates.Over a 42 months project duration, the two process lines described will undergo a thorough component developmentR&D programme so as to be able to assemble three optimised TRL5 integrated test-rigs (one per TP) to prove theachievement of all the quantified techno-economical targets.

EggPlantProject ref erence: 718097

A feasibility study, to investigate and verify the commercial and industrial viabilityof a wastewater processing solution to generate bioplastics from agri-food andmunicipal wastewater sources.

From 2016-02-01 to 2016-05-31, closed project

Project details

Objective

Currently, the bioplastics industry is restricted by the high cost of PHA and PHB bioplastics, despite the global capacityfor their production outstripping commonly-used hydrocarbon-based thermoplastics and alternative bioplastic solutions;contemporary bioplastics that can compete with hydrocarbon thermoplastics are derived from crops (primarily us ingstarch compounds), creating a conflict between using crops for food or as an industrial raw material, and increasing thecost of food. Furthermore, wastewater presents itself as a constant burden for industry, particularly wastewatercontaining nutrients that can potentially lead to a high biological oxygen demand (BOD) which damages aquaticecosystems. The Eggplant is an innovative two-phase water treatment procedure that filters industrial wastewater andapplies a three-stage post-filtration process. Through this process, each Eggplant uses wastewater as a raw materialfor the production of bioplastics us ing a commercial bacterial culture. Critically, the water at the end of the process ispurified and safe to be used as drinking water or for re lease into watercourses. The primary value of Eggplant is thereduction of waste from agri-food industrial wastewater from twofold to zero – filtration removes the majority ofpollutants and fermentation removes organic contaminants. The resulting concentrate is then processed into PHA andPHB bioplastics. Moreover, an Eggplant, through the use of concentrated substrate can generate 3-4 times as muchbioplastic from an equivalent volume of wastewater.

CORNpositeProject ref erence: 717829

Valorisation of corn processing by-products into plastic bio-composites

From 2016-03-01 to 2016-07-31, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

The presence of mycotoxins in food and feed may affect human and animal health as they may cause differentadverse health effects such as induction of cancer and mutagenicity, as well as gastrointestinal disorders. ECRegulation 1881/2006 concerning foodstuff, one of the strictest in the world, is causing a major increase of agriculturalrejects of almost 20 million tonnes due to the concentration limits imposed for certain mycotoxins in food products. Onaverage 10-30% of total corn stored for our annual production is not able to comply with these limits , representingeconomic losses up to €1M. In addition, in corn by-products mycotoxins concentration is up to 20 times more of than inthe final product. This is causing a reduction in competiveness of EU agro-companies like Corn Valley, which currentlyhave to direct fractions with high peaks of mycotoxins to animal feed or for biogas production, lowering the potentialincomes from these by-products (over 30% of our total production).CORNposite wants to use the parts of the corn with the highest levels of mycotoxins to produce a new sustainable andstabilised material, as the thermal process to manufacture our corn-based plastic composite has proved to destroy thetoxins. CORNposite will bring a revolutionary system for agro-waste valorisation, which can be applied by a hugenumber of agriculture companies (as technology can be replicated thanks to state-of-the-art machinery), at the time thata new line of green products will be put in the plastics market. We Corn Valley and NaturePlast are working together with the aim of developing our process prototype (currently atTRL6) to establish a new model for sustainable supply chain of raw materials for bioplastics production, through thevalorisation of corn processing rejects into a novel range of bio-based composite plastics for 3 different applications:construction (decking and fencing), automobile interior parts and packaging.

Promoting stakeholder engagement and public awareness for a participativegovernance of the European bioeconomy

From 2015-03-01 to 2018-02-28, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

The bioeconomy holds potential solutions to important challenges of the future. The social, economic and environmentalimpacts associated with its products and processes, however, will require extensive dialogue processes on the futuredevelopment of the bioeconomy. For this purpose, BioSTEP will apply a three-tier approach which aims at reaching allre levant actors in the bioeconomy domain, particularly policy makers, various stakeholder groups (scientists , business,non-governmental organisations, etc.), and citizens. Tailored communication tools , including workshops, conferences andexhibitions, will be developed for each target group in order to maximize outreach and to facilitate active engagementin public debates on the bioeconomy. At a regional level, a ‘living lab’ approach will be applied and tested, whichfacilitates the involvement of public-private networks of stakeholders in bioeconomy-based innovation and businessmodel development processes.

ALTERFORProject ref erence: 676754

Alternative models and robust decision-making for future forest management

From 2016-04-01 to 2020-09-30, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

European forests are expected to provide a broad range of ecosystem services (ES). This capacity is howeverthreatened by the uncertainties of climate change, the complex dynamics of evolving global markets and the pressuresfor increased use of bioenergy. Such challenges cannot be effectively addressed with an uncritical regional or nationalcommitment to traditional forest management models (FMMs), as these are unlikely to ensure the sustained long-termprovis ioning of desired ES, let alone their optimised delivery. ALTERFOR’s goal is thus to facilitate the implementation ofFMMs better suited to meeting the challenges of the 21st century by: (1) Identifying and developing FMMs robust in theircapacity to deliver ES and overcome projected socio-ecological risks and uncertainties; (2) Assessing the impact ofdifferent FMM combinations in terms of resultant ES baskets on the European and landscape level, and (3) Facilitatingthe implementation of desired FMMs and improving cross-national knowledge transfer regarding their benefits , costs, management, and utilization. The project will involve a consortium of 19 organisations from nine countries chosen dueto their possession of the transdisciplinary expertise necessary to achieve these objectives, and for ensuring anencompassing representation of Europe’s socio-economic conditions and prevailing forest management paradigms.Based on carefully designed case studies, the consortium will make sure realistic models of forest owner behaviourare employed; guarantee the involvement of forest stakeholders throughout the project; anchor the desired FMMs torelevant forest actors; and help disseminate project findings to local, national and European stakeholders. The mainlong-term impact of ALTERFOR is the implementation of FMMs that secure the capacity of Europe’s forests to continueproviding a balanced ES basket that societies will depend upon over the coming century.

COMPSULEProject ref erence: 697822

COMPostable capSULE for instant coffee delivery based on an innovative chemicalfunctionalizationof biobased plastics

From 2015-11-01 to 2016-02-29, closed project

Project details

Objective

Compsule is a compostable capsule designed for instant espresso coffee machines such as ones produced by Lavazzaand Nespresso, that operates at a high temperature and pressure. Compsule aims to contribute to reduce the amountof recyclable material being sent to landfills as a result of the increased use of capsuled coffee. In Italy alone over 1billion plastic coffee capsules are consumed annually. Albeit being made of 100% recyclable materials , coffee capsulesare barely recycled due to the time and effort required in cleaning and sorting the capsule’s components after use.Point Plastics have developed an innovative chemical additive that when mixed with bioplastics increases their thermalstability, making them compatible for extreme operational applications such as espresso coffee extraction. Thisprocess technology has a great impact on biobased polymer producers enabling a wider market share in fie ldsimpossible to target today. Compsules will be able to be disposed of with other food and green waste that is commonlycollected by municipalities within the European Union, thus reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfills byhundreds of thousands of tonnes per year. For coffee producers the capsules will reduce their carbon footprint andrespond to the demand of an increasingly environmentally conscious consumer base. For the capsule printingmanufacturers, the Compsule does not impose any new machinery on their current production line as the Compsulescan be manufactured s imilarly to the polymers currently used. For capsuled coffee drinkers the Compsules are bothairtight and designed to fit user’s current machines, allowing them to be easily adopted. The Compsules have been developed and validated in an operational environment (TRL 8) and now require funding tooutline a sound business development and industrial implementation and validation plan.

Smart Technologies for the Conversion of Industrial Lignins into SustainableMaterials

From 2015-07-01 to 2018-07-01, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

SmartLi aims at developing technologies for us ing technical lignins as raw materials for biomaterials and demonstratingtheir industrial feasibility. The technical lignins included in the study are kraft lignins, lignosulphonates and bleachingeffluents, representing all types of abundant lignin sources. The raw materials are obtained from industrial partners. The technical lignins are not directly applicable for the production of biomaterials with acceptable product specifications. Therefore, pretreatments will be developed to reduce their sulphur content and odour and provide constant quality.Thermal pretreatments are also expected to improve the material properties of lignin to be used as reinforcing filler incomposites, while fractionating pretreatments will provide streams that will be tested as plasticizers. Lignin is expectedto add value to composites also by improving their flame retardancy. The development of composite applications is ledby an industrial partner. Base catalysed degradation will be studied as means to yie ld reactive oligomeric ligninfractions for res in applications. The degradation will be followed by downstream processing and potentially by furtherchemical modification aiming at a polyol replacement in PU resins. Also PF type res ins for gluing and laminateimpregnation, and epoxy res ins will be among the target products. Full LCA, including a dynamic process, will supportthe study. The outcome of the research will be communicated with stakeholders related to legis lation andstandardisation.

Springwave2014Project ref erence: 663942

Transitioning to microalgae as a sustainable, high-quality large-scale food sourcethrough launching the first daily drink containing spirulina

From 2015-02-01 to 2015-07-31, closed project

Project details

Objective

To meet the challenges of growing world food consumption, environmental preservation and sustainable foodproduction, spirulina has been identified as an extremely valuable solution by many international bodies. However, thismicroalgae is still a largely underutilised food resource. The reasons are organoleptic (foul taste and smell) and, mostimportantly, cultural (algae are not part of the Western culinary art).

To eliminate organoleptic barriers, ALGAMA brings a strong innovation by extracting high-quality nutrients frommicroalgae. To overcome cultural res istance, ALGAMA wants to create consumer awareness through an appealingmass-market product: “Springwave”, the first daily drink containing high-quality spirulina nutrients. This first product willbe followed by a large variety of spirulina-based food products.

User needs to be met upon completion of the project are the trends (and societal challenges) health and well-being.Consumers are increasingly concerned with the nutritional properties of their food, but also that the food is natural andsustainable. Other user benefits are taste, texture s imilar to water and the ready-to-use approach.

The feasibility study will assess 3 key levels:1. Commercial: Define strategy for mass-market expansion in France, UK, Germany, Netherlands and Sweden2. Industrial: Analyse and decide on environment-friendly model to increase production capacity from 15 000 to 1 000000 bottles per year3. Legal: Identify legal and IP issues for the launch of Springwave outs ide FranceFor mass-market commercialisation of our spirulina-based beverage, total funding requirement during 2 years forPhase 2 is estimated at € 3 300 000.

After testing its beverage in France, ALGAMA intends to expand in Northern Europe (UK, Germany, Netherlands andSweden) where the health awareness is strongest and the functional product consumption highest, before entering intothe first two biggest functional beverage consumption markets: USA and Japan.

Slimming MIcroaLgae Extract : Development of a new highly effective microalgae-based slimmingingredient for nutraceutical applications

From 2015-03-01 to 2015-08-31, closed project

Project details

Objective

The SMILE project aims at developing a microalgae-based innovative natural marine ingredient with scientificallydemonstrated benefits on weight management and metabolism issues.Obesity and overweight concerning 37% of world population in 2013 (The Lancet, 2014) represent major global healthchallenges causing millions of deaths worldwide. Well integrated comprehensive strategies can contribute tooverweight management. Specifically developed bioactive compounds used in food supplements can help peoplewanting to lose weight. Consumer are looking for safe, effective (scientifically proven), affordable and natural solutionson these issues that represent today an unmet need. Marine environment is full of biological compounds that couldrepresent relevant answers to these needs. Especially, a specific marine carotenoid found in algae, has received astrong and recent interest from the industry as several scientific publications have demonstrated superior efficacy ofthis molecule in comparison of existing products targeting weight reduction. However, the only available sourcing (amacroalgae) presents several drawbacks such as the presence of micro-pollutants and some sustainability issues.Through an innovative and patented technology, Microphyt produces sustainably and markets unique bioactivecompounds extracted from the untapped divers ity of microalgae. Microphyt has identified few strains which are difficultto produce in competitors’ systems and that are able to produce high quantities of this specific marine carotenoid. Moreover, our specific process allow the optimal production of this compound combined with PUFAs which exhibitdemonstrated synergistic effects on metabolism. In this context SMILE ingredient represents a high added valuepotential for Microphyt. Phase 1 feasibility study aims at further analyzing IPR and regulatory status of the differentstrains, re leasing a detailed business plan based on market feedback and pursue the scale up of the best selectedstrain.

Plants for PlantsProject ref erence: 712214

From plants for plants: enhancing crops potential and resilience by reliable newgeneration biostimulants

From 2016-02-01 to 2016-08-31, ongoing project

Project details

Objective

Objective of the innovation project is the worldwide market introduction of a new generation of plant-derivedbiostimulants able to enhance crops yie lds without resorting to chemical inputs and to improve plant res ilience toclimate change in a stable, re liable way. With the conventional cropping systems, the potential of cultivated plants is close to the maximum. Moreover, climatechange impacts (drought, extreme temperatures, etc.) are on the rise, putting further constraints to yie lds andchallenging food security. Meanwhile many fertilizers are outlawed by ever-stricter environmental laws, leavingfarmers and industry in search for alternatives. Pressures which are reinforced by a ris ing demand for healthy andeco-friendly products. Landlab biostimulants have been designed as an answer to these challenges. Breakthrough is the opening of a newand precise pathway, much more s imilar to the pharmaceutical/natural product industry than to current agricultural one. This will lead to the buildup of a strongly integrated source-to-s ink production chain, able to generate a flow ofinnovative products, specifically tailored on critical stages and conditions of manifold crops and supported by accurateidentification of their active compounds and by efficacy studies, as to counter the main drawback of state-of-the-artbiostimulants: their inconsistent stability of performances. In order to transform these R&D outcomes into successful products, 1st aim of the feasibility study is to assess themost convenient direction of prototype demonstration and market introduction efforts . Technical and market data will becrossed with cost analys is to identify which biostimulants launch first and benchmark the potential business models. Then matured information will be elaborated into a business plan and commercialization strategy, to be validated inPhase 2. After the launch, Landlab expects to double its growth pace, triggering jobs for highly skilled scientists and investments.

PLANTIBIOTICSProject ref erence: 697125

Functional ingredient from fermented vegetable waste streams to diminish the useof antibiotics in pig husbandry

From 2015-10-01 to 2016-02-29, closed project

Project details

Objective

PROVALOR is a highly innovative Dutch SME dedicated to the development of functional foods located in Hoofddorp (TheNetherlands) and employing 15 people. Since 1998 we have been working in processing food wastes, particularly fromvegetable remnants and obtaining functional ingredients for human consumption. Our strategy focuses in obtaining high-value ingredients, and we have a vast know-how in this fie ld having released to the market several successful productssuch as foodfibers refined from vegetables, a meat substitute made exclus ively from vegetables (first without soja),and juices refined from vegetable remnants. We have obtained a functional extract from fermented vegetable remnants through our ad-hoc exclus ive methodology. When included as a functional ingredient in pig feed in an amount of 0.02-0.05%, it promotes agglutination of hazardousbacteria in the pig’s gut, allowing them to get expelled with the faeces, minimis ing illnesses and reducing the necessityof the use of antibiotics.Antibiotics are a key tool against infectious bacterial diseases. The use of sub-therapeutic doses of antibiotics in food-animal feeds (growth promoters) has been a very common practice to prevent animals from diseases and to improveproduction performance in intensive animal husbandry, but this practice has been banned s ince 2006. This problem is abig issue, in the EU and worldwide, and great effort is being put to find viable alternatives. Actually there is a recentlyconstituted Focus Group within EIP-AGRI, dedicated to “Reducing antibiotic use in pig farming”. They encourage to“further examine use of plant-based pig feed additives”. We have obtained an effective solution in this line, and considering an average content of 0,04% of PLANTIBIOTICSthere is a potential market for 20.000tn yearly only in the EU.
