The organizational macroclasses

• Based on how capital is allocated/absorbed by each BU, 7 organizational macroclasses, including all Top 20 European Banking Groups, have been

indentified:

1) The main organizational macroclass (24% of Total Assets of the sample) is characterized by two main BUs (Retail + PB & AM, Corporate & Investment Banking) and in some cases an additional BU including Specialized Financial Services (Consumer Finance, Asset Finance; Credit Card, ...)

2) The second organizational macroclass (13% of Total Assets) is characterized by 4 BUs (Retail, PB & AM; Corporate Banking; Investment Banking)3) The third organizational macroclass (11% of Total Assets) is characterized by 2 BUs (Retail, PB & AM + Corporate Banking + Investment Banking)4) The fourth organizational macroclass (11% of Total Assets) is characterized by 3 BUs (Retail + PB + Corporate Banking; AM; Investment Banking) and in some

cases an additional BU including Specialized Financial Services (Consumer Finance, Asset Finance; Credit Card, ...)5) The fifth organizational macroclass (10% of Total Assets) is characterized by 3 main BUs (Retail, PB & AM; Corporate + Investment Banking) and in some

The organizational macroclass 2 with 3 main BUs (Retail Banking,Corporate Banking and Investment Banking) and a remaining BU ( Private Banking and Asset Management) presents the highest 2012-15 average profitability [2012-15 Avg. RoTAE: 8,7%]The organizational macroclass 5 with 2 main BUs (Retail Banking and Corporate Banking + Investment Banking) and 2 other secondary BUs with all remaining operating areas (Private Banking and Asset Management and Specilaized financial services) is second in terms of 2012-15 average profitability among the 7 macroclass [2012-15 Avg. RoTAE: 6,5%] The organizational macroclass 3 with a main BU (Retail Banking) and a second BU with all remaining operating areas (Private Banking and Asset Management + Corporate Banking + Investment Banking) is third in terms of 2012-15 average profitability among the 7 macroclass [2012-15 Avg. % breakdown of Allocated/Absorbed Capital by Business Unit for the first 20 European Banks by Total Assets

• Based on how capital is allocated/absorbed by each BU, 7 organizational macroclasses, including all Top 20 European Banking Groups, have been

indentified:

1) The main organizational macroclass (24% of Total Assets of the sample) is characterized by two main BUs (Retail + PB & AM, Corporate & Investment Banking) and in some cases an additional BU including Specialized Financial Services (Consumer Finance, Asset Finance; Credit Card, ...)

2) The second organizational macroclass (13% of Total Assets) is characterized by 4 BUs (Retail, PB & AM; Corporate Banking; Investment Banking)3) The third organizational macroclass (11% of Total Assets) is characterized by 2 BUs (Retail, PB & AM + Corporate Banking + Investment Banking)4) The fourth organizational macroclass (11% of Total Assets) is characterized by 3 BUs (Retail + PB + Corporate Banking; AM; Investment Banking) and in some
