From The Director It has been an exciting year at Eugene Airport. For the fourth year in a row, we have increased our commercial passenger traffic. As Transponder is published, we are, up 2.3 percent over our record-set-ting 2013. To help accommodate that growth, we completed a beautiful ticket lobby renovation and just a few months ago embarked on a $17m terminal expan-sion project which you can read about in this issue of the Transponder Quarterly. The excitement doesn’t stop at commercial service. In 2014 GA traffic rebounded slightly and operations were up approx-imately three percent. These numbers are encouraging because as most of you know, general aviation nationwide took a significant hit during the 2008 recession. Another bright spot about GA at Eugene Airport is the continuing growth of the experimental/ homebuilt market and the success of Synergy Air’s RV12 manufacturing operation. General Aviation is important to the airport and community. It covers a broad spectrum of activities from Sunday fliers to corporate aviation. These activities help the airport bring economic pros-perity to our region and provides a stepping stone into the avia-tion industry. Challenges continue to face GA and legislatures around the country will have their hands full in 2015. The new Congress will be tasked with completing the FAA Reauthorization Bill. The FAA Bill is very important to our industry. It will likely include conver-sations on NEXTGEN funding, including funding sources like fuel taxes. Last but not least, the final rulemaking on hangar use will likely be introduced. The people and businesses that make up general aviation are still recovering from the worst economic times the aviation industry has ever seen. The impact of the struggling economy on the busi-nesses that rely on general aviation is visible in all parts of the country. The Eugene Airport is a diverse organization that provides transportation services to the region. General aviation, air carri-er operations, military operations and charter activity are all vital parts of the airport’s success. The airport values our general aviation community and we look forward to a prosperous year in 2015. — Tim Doll, AAE

Speed Limits Keeping the airport safe is a big priority for airport opera-tions. Posted speed limits on

the ramp should be adhered to. Most areas of the ramp are 15 mph. As you pass in front of Atlantic Aviation, the speed limit is 5 mph. Please do your part to observe airport speed limits.

It is everybody’s responsibility to fol-low airport regula-tions, entering and exiting the secured area correctly. It is a violation to allow others to piggyback in and out of the fenced areas of the airport. Please stop and make sure the gate completely closes so that others cannot enter or exit using your access ID.

Kathy Nasholm

Kathy Nasholm has been em-ployed at Eugene Airport since June of 2007. Her primary fo-cus in her position is contracts, accounts receivables and cus-tomer service. She efficiently keeps track of leases, coordi-nates hangar inspections, in-voices annual rents and tracks insurance certificates for the GA community. “I love that EUG looks so sharp and operates so well,” Kathy said. “We have a small staff but we do a lot of work. It is impressive.” Kathy is often the face of airport administration. She works alongside Kimberly Boothe in the front office of the administration building. She is a friendly face and can answer just about every question you might have. If she cannot an-swer it, she will find somebody who can.

Lawrence Air Service Ground Handler for The Ducks

Lawrence Air Service is the ground handler for the Pac-12 champion Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers, as well as other NCAA teams who fly into Eugene to play our two local schools and a variety of other charter operations. Lawrence Air Service han-dles several NCAA charters during the football season. The Ducks and Beavers have been using EUG for years but the

streamlined operation of Lawrence Air Service from the South Cargo Ramp make the process seamless. Players and coaches board aircraft only feet from their vehicles and pass through a TSA- approved security process which enables pas-sengers a seamless boarding experience. Lawrence handles vacation charters on a variety of aircraft. GO DUCKS!

Fourth Quarter GA Forum Held

‘Super Scoopers’ Based Here

Nearly 60 members of the general aviation community at Eugene Airport attended an Open house/ General Aviation Forum to discuss important issues to the airport commu-nity. Snacks and refreshments were provided. The forum preceded the monthly meeting of the Eugene Airport Exper-imental Aircraft Association who partnered with the airport for the event. The next GA Forum will take place in April. The forums are important to the communica-tion process and gives voice to the GA community at EUG.

You probably noticed the U.S. Forest Service Fire and Avia-tion Management Amphibious Aircraft Team’s Bombardier CL-415 water scooper and two Canadair CL-215 water scoo-pers that were based at EUG this past summer. These aircraft can drop be-tween 1,400 and 1,800 gallons of water from heights as low as 100’ over open flames and were critical to firefighting in Oregon this past fire season.

Oregon Aviation Appreciation Month Declared Eugene Airport hosted air-ports from around the state of Oregon for the Oregon Airport Management Association (OAMA) conference. The three day conference was held at Valley River Inn and included presentations from numerous aviation experts who spoke about issues critical to the success of aviation and air-ports in the state of Oregon. Airport director, Tim Doll, AAE, received the distinguished

‘President’s Award,’ for his commitment to leadership in the aviation industry. Highlights from this year’s conference included Gov-ernor, John Kitzhaber, declaring October Avi-ation Industry Appreciation Month.

Terminal

Expansion Project

The Eugene Airport

terminal building is under-going a major expansion project which started in November. The project is focused on accommodat-ing increased passenger use. RS&H, an architecture and engineering firm spe-cializing in airport planning, designed the project. Essex Construction will complete the build-out, in multiple areas, simul-taneously over a two-year time period. Project com-pletion and commissioning is targeted for early 2017. Passenger traffic increased six percent in 2011, four percent in 2012 and six percent in 2013. Final num-bers for 2014 are not yet in but the airport is expected to set additional records.

Given the new demands, airport management recogniz-es the need to improve termi-nal services. “The exponential passenger increases we have been experiencing the past few years have brought on some growing pains,” said Eugene Airport Advisory Committee Chairman John Tamulonis. “This renovation project will bring relief at a couple of key pinch points in the terminal building and provide an overall improved passenger experi-ence.” The remodel will focus on several areas including the security screening check-point, B-gate hold room, A-gate concourse and the baggage claim area, with a goal of eas-ing congestion and improving functionality for passengers. The project is funded by the FAA grants, passenger facility charges and airport revenue.
