Ethan Draddy: What is STEM?

Standing for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, the STEM project operates as a Boy Scouts of America initiative that is designed to encourage member interest in these disciplines through existing scouting programs. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, significant math or science training is a key requirement for 15 of today’s 20 fastest-growing occupations based on ten-year employment projections. BSA helps provide its youth with a strong STEM-based education and fosters a new generation of innovation.

The Nova Awards program stands as a key part of BSA’s STEM initiative. Available at all levels of scouting, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers, the Nova Awards are merit-based awards that are given to members who fulfill requirements and complete activities in the four STEM fields. By showing how these disciplines apply to everyday life and making them enjoyable and accessible, BSA aims to spark further interest in scientific pursuits for young people.
