As one of the many engaging daily programming blocks from top broadcasters around the globe, Africa Today TV (daily from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.) delivers a unique new link between the U.S. and 21st century Africa.
The Emmy-nominated In the Loop, WYCC’s
flagship news program, has been covering important
topics from the city, state, and nation since 2013. The
program prides itself on its in-depth coverage and
analysis, going deeper to help viewers understand
complex issues.
Chris Bury and Barbara Pinto, two of the country’s
most respected journalists, have been co-hosting
In the Loop since the beginning. The pair is now
welcoming celebrated Chicago journalists Robin
Robinson and Lauren Cohn to the program. “In the
Loop is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our
viewers,” said Paul Buckner, General Manager of WYCC
PBS Chicago, “and the addition of Robin and Lauren
will help broaden our coverage and provide more
insightful stories our viewers have come to expect.”
Through its unique combination of investigative
reporting, one-on-one interviews, and panel
discussions, In the Loop provides a new spin
on news coverage that can’t be found on other
stations. Notable guests join the hosts each week to
discuss a variety of topics. In Season 6, some of the
subjects addressed will be education, politics, and
transgendered teens.
In the Loop has new episodes Thursdays at
7 p.m., with encore presentations Saturdays at 1 a.m.
and Sundays at 6:30 p.m.
The sixth season of WYCC PBS Chicago’s news series returns with new faces bringing

Thursdays take viewers away from North America, to the far reaches of Scandinavia and Asia. New Scandinavian Cooking airs at 2:30 p.m., followed by Martin Yan’s Taste of Vietnam at 3 p.m.
Finally, beginning cooks can get a boost of confidence under the instruction of Joanne Weir’s Cooking Confidence Fridays at 3 p.m. Joanne teaches students by using her home kitchen as a classroom.

While WYCC is the place to see and hear musical performances from popular and up-and-coming artists every Friday evening, you can also tune in to WKKC—the official radio station of the City Colleges of Chicago—on 89.3fm or streaming online 24 hours a day at wkkc.fm.
WYCC PBS Chicago offers teachers of different grade levels an excellent selection of high-interest, educationally rich programs for students, along with accompanying resources—absolutely free! Here are some of this month’s highlights categorized by content area.
LANGUAGE ARTSProgram: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Focus: American Literature Grades: 3–12 Airing: Saturday, October 31 at 7 p.m.
Overview: First written in 1820 by author Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has alternatively been called “A Classic of American Literature” and “The Great American Ghost Story.” In this new short film, a storyteller uses most of Irving’s original language as actors bring the story to life.
Free Additional Resources: PBS Parents has excellent resources supporting this classic story.
Students might read or watch an age-appropriate version and create a flipbook.
Students might also research Sleepy Hollow, NY, using these PBS resources. They might preview all of the locations, then choose one of their favorites, and create a travel brochure that includes reasons to visit.
SOCIAL STUDIESProgram: Life on the Line: Coming of Age Between Nations Focus: Current Events Grades: 5–12 Airing: Sunday, October 4 at 4 p.m.
Overview: Eleven-year-old Kimberly Torrez lives in Mexico and crosses the border every day to attend school in America. Her American father is unemployed, ill with Hepatitis C, and in need of a liver transplant, while her Mexican mother is barred from the U.S. Kimberly is holding the family together and soaring at a school that is used to teaching “transfronterizos” (people who cross the border daily).
Free Additional Resources: Students might read an article about youth and immigration, and respond to it in an essay or verbal report. The documentary’s website has a link of articles.
Students might do further research by reading all of the articles, then debate the issue by sharing pros and cons about this complex issue.
Chris and Martin Kratt, who are better known as simply “the Kratt brothers,” have been teaching children about wild animals since 1996. They first appeared on PBS with the program Kratts’ Creatures. Then, from 1999-2001, they hosted Zooboomafoo. Since 2011, their cartoon selves have been the stars of Wild Kratts, which airs on WYCC PBS Chicago weekdays at 8:30 a.m.
The Kratt brothers were born and raised in New Jersey. Martin was born on December 23, 1965, and Chris was born on July 19, 1969. Martin attended Duke University, where he earned a B.S. in zoology, and Chris went to Carleton College and earned a B.A. in biology.
Chris and Martin started filming their own wildlife documentaries in college, when they would film the animals they saw while camping and then edit their film in their basement. Since then, they have traveled all over North America, South America, Africa, Australia, and Asia to meet creatures large and small.
Chris’ goal in life is “to find out all he can about creatures and the creature world.” Martin’s goals are “to meet all his creature neighbors and convince people to be kind to creatures.” Through their educational programs on PBS, they have been helping young people around the country achieve these goals as well.
