president’s reportoctober 2013

Dear Neighbors, As you know the weekend of September 14th and 15th was a very special one for our Neighborhood. The brand new entry sign on the corner of Fall Creek and Brokenhurst was unveiled Saturday morning with a ribbon cutting ceremony and our annual Fall Picnic wrapped up the weekend on Sunday afternoon. We are so lucky to have so many great neighbors who are active and involved in our community. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was the culmination of over 6 years of planning and represents a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication to our Neighborhood. After a few

opening remarks from myself and John Haines the beautiful stone entry sign was unveiled to the cheers of the crowd. A heart felt thank you to The Landmarks & Legacy Committee consisting of Paul Aikins, John Haines, Ron Lantz, Steve Sergi and Ron Taylor (in alphabetical order) for all their untold hours and sheer determination to see this project through. This was truly a community effort; without donations from a majority of neighbors this would have never been possible. And finally many thanks go to Dr. Charlie and Sandy Kinsella for generously allowing the en-try sign to be placed on their property. The Fall Picnic, our largest neighbor-hood social event of the year was well attended by about 200 people. We enjoyed outstanding live Jazz from ZMC Band, plenty of excellent foodand lots of fun for all ages. I would like to thank all those who joined us

for this great annual event. It takes a village to put together this event and we could never have done it with the help of so many.

A special thank you to Victory Baptist Church, Pastor Don Whitecotton and his congregation for again this year kindly providing the host location, sponsoring the Photo Booth and providing so much help with both set-up and clean-up. To Steve Sergi and his very able assistant Chris for arriving early to make sure there were more than enough hot and delicious hamburgers and hot dogs for everyone. To Heidi Houston our Social Chair who did so much before, after and during to make the picnic such a success. She even made Sno-cones! And finally the Board Members and Laurie Murphy for jumping in and handling all their tasks flawlessly. It was so wonderful seeing everyone, meeting new residents and members of Victory Baptist Church. Hope you were able to join us and if not, be sure to plan on it for next year.

don’t forget the binford Farmers market is still going strong saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm through october.

Many companies and individuals are fighting for your mortgage business. Only a few are exceptional and I believe you’ll find that Stonegate Mortgage and I rise above the rest. I can assist you with buying your first home or your sixth.

Rates are at historic lows and I would love the opportunity to help you refinance, if you haven’t taken advantage of this opportunity already. Whether you want to save money each month by having a lower rate, or if you’d like to reduce the term on your mortgage to a 10, 15 or 20 year term, I’d be honored to assist you with options.

Take advantage of my services and I will make a $200 donation in your name to the Devonshire III & VI or BRAG project of your choice.

The September, 2013 meeting was held at the home of Kate Thedwall at 6380 Brixton Ln on March 21, 2013, at 7pm. In attendance were Doug Snow, Denny Dinn, Sheryl Holko, Sally Roscetti, Kate Thedwall, Laura Weiger, Heidi Huston and great neighbors Dean Phillips and Laurie Murphy.

The August minutes were approved.

Treasurer updates from Paul Aikins will be in the Crier (he was unable to attend the meeting).

Denny Dinn updated the group that there were no incidents in OUR neighborhood in the past month.

After all of her prodding of the city, Sally Roscetti was able to confirm that all neighborhood fire hydrants have been painted except for those on Harbridge and Breamore (at this writing). She is following up on those two streets to make sure they are not missed. Sally then presented some ideas for a contract for snow removal this winter; on her advice the board voted to again retain the service of Mike Noll primarily because of the great job he’s been doing for us.

Kate Thedwall and Laura Weiger updated us on their work with the block captains and on their system for get-ting out new neighbor welcome baskets. Kate and Laura are going to host a meeting for all block captains on Wednesday, October 23rd at 7pm at Kate’s home at 6380 Brixton Lane. They will be discussing such things as a “door-to-door census” to obtain updated information for the next neighborhood directory.

Ron Taylor and Lori Taylor were not able to attend but they informed us that several neighbors have not yet paid their annual dues so an invoice will be going out to them.

Heidi Huston notified us that the Halloween Hayride is planned for Sunday, October 27th. She and Doug led us on a discussion about the Fall picnic and our feedback on the success of that event.

Doug finalized our picnic discussion and addressed our concerns over the religious fliers that were distributed. We discussed Paul Aikins’ idea for a neighborhood BUSINESS directory. That discussion was temporarily tabled.

There being no further business and no new business the meeting was adjourned.

the Next NeIghborhood meetINg WIll be held oN thursday, october 17th

at 7pm. It WIll be hosted by doug sNoW at hIs home at 5606 ashurst.

All board members and ALL neighbors are invited AND ENCOURAGED to attend.

Respectfully Submitted, Sheryl L. Holko, Secretary

Remember to Plant Trees !! It’s been two hard summers with very dry conditions. This, along with the emerald ash borrer, has let to many neighborhood trees being cut down. Devonshire is known for its many mature trees. It we want to keep up this positive attribute we need you to replace the trees that have been lost. The fall season is a great time to plant.

Please plant trees today for our future neighborhood residents!

to Fall pIcNIc atteNdees: It was brought to the attention of the Devonshire III & VI Board of Directors that one or two individu-als distributed religious materials at the Fall Picnic held on September 15th. As a civic organization it is our goal that all our residents and invited guests feel welcome at our events. We want to make it clear these individuals did not have permission to do so nor were they in any way associated with Vic-tory Baptist Church, We are putting safeguards in place to make sure this doesn’t happen at any of our future events. If anyone was offended, we apologize and we will make every effort to ensure it does not occur again. Sincerely, Devonshire III & VI Board of Directors

Hello Devonshire Neighbors,

I hope you are all enjoying the cooler temperatures and start of the fall colors. Speaking of color, has anyone noticed that our fire hydrants have recently been painted? Thanks to Denny Dinn for suggesting the idea. They look much nicer and should be easier for our fire fighters to spot them in case of an emergency. Thanks so much to my Brixton neighbors John Timble and Bill West who both offered to paint their own hydrants. You are officially off the hook.

I have been in touch with our neighborhood liaison a few times in the last few months and found him very helpful. If you have a question or concern that in some way involves the city of Indianapolis, our liaison Gary Loveless ([email protected]) can probably at least point you in the right direction or give you the name of the department or person with which you need to speak. I had a chance to meet Gary at our neighborhood picnic and he is excited to help with communication between our neighbors and the city.

Finally, I wanted to let you know that we have again contracted with Noll Landscaping to take care of snow removal for our neighborhood this winter. The labor charge increased 3%, but there was no increase last year. Noll does a great job of getting out early for us and making the roads and, especially the hills, safe for neighbors and school buses after a snow-fall or ice. Many neighborhoods rely on the city to do their plowing after major roadways are cleared. I think we can all imagine how long it would take for many of our roads to be addressed if we did not have a private contract. Last year our cost was about $4500. The money collected from our voluntary neighborhood dues is critical for covering this service. If you haven’t paid your 2013 dues, please do so that we can be sure to have money in reserve to pay for snow removal and all of the other fun things we have each year like our recent picnic.

As always, if you have ideas for improving our

neighborhood in some way, please do not

hesitate to share your ideas with me or other

board members. We all think that

Devonshire III and VI is pretty special

and strive to make it a great neighborhood!

Happy raking and keep those street drains

clear of falling leaves!

Have you seen the new sign at Brokenhurst and Fall Creek? Officially unveiled on September 14, it is the latest addition on keeping Devonshire III & VI one of the best neighborhoods in Indianapolis to live. Additional landscaping and lighting are soon to follow. The Knyghton Rd. sign is making progress as the survey has been completed and stakes have been placed. We will keep you posted on its progress.

Thanks again to Ron Taylor and his staff at Taylor Siefker Williams design group, Paul Aikins, Steve Sergi, and Ron Lantz for a job well done and to all the neighbors who pay their dues each year and to those who pitched in a little extra to make this happen.

CRIME WATCH

burglary preVeNtIoN tIpsEach year in the U.S. there are more than five million home burglaries. Nine out of ten of these crimes are pre-ventable. The risk of being burglarized can be greatly reduced by taking simple steps to make your home more difficult to enter and less enticing to would-be burglars.Remember, some of the greatest weapons in the fight to prevent burglaries are light, time and noise.

• Makesurethatexteriorlightsaremountedoutofreach,sothatburglarscan’teasilyunscrewbulbs.• Considerbuyingmotion-sensitivelights,whicharenowavailableatrelativelylowprices.• Usevariabletimerstoactivatelightsandradios/TVsinsideyourhome.• Trimtreesandshrubsneardoorsandwindowssoburglarscan’thideintheshadows

Make it time-consuming for a burglar to break into your home by:• Installingdeadboltlocksonallexteriordoors,andUSETHEM...!• Installingdoublekeylocksindoorswhichcontainglass.Thiswillkeepaburglarfrombeingabletoopenthe door simply by breaking the glass and reaching through. (Note: so that everyone in the house can get out in the event of a fire, be sure to keep the key in designated place).• Placingadditionallocksonallwindowsandpatiodoors. If you and the people in your household are ready, have the time and can afford it, get a dog, especially from a shelter. Remember, you don’t need a large attack dog; even a small dog creates a disturbance that intruders would prefer to avoid. Consider having someone care for your dog(s) in your home while you’re away, instead of boarding them. If you can afford it, install an alarm system that will alert neighbors of a burglar’s presence. Most systems can even summon local police directly.Remember to keep the code to your system safe and updated, and most important: USE IT...!

one of the very best crime prevention tools that you can use are your neighbors! Help keep an eye out on each other’s houses and belongings! You can see their houses better than they can. Report anything out of the ordinary at that moment. Watch for strange vehicles on your streets. Do not wait to ask questions and miss an opportunity to help prevent a crime.)

OTHER TIPS TO PREVENT BREAK-INS:

• Think like a burglar. “Case” your home the way a burglar would and look for easy ways to enter your home.

• Be sure valuables such as guns, electronic devices and artwork are not visible from the street.

• Be sure to lock up ladders and tools which could be used to break into your home.

• Work together with your neighbors. Organize a Neighborhood CrimeWatch and let your neighbors know when you will be away for an extended period of time.

• While on vacation, have someone pick up your newspapers and mail, so that they do not accumulate and alert burglars of your absence.

• Display your house number clearly and have it well illuminated. This will help police and emergency personnel find your home quickly when necessary.

JUST IN CASE...Sometimes, all your efforts won’t stop a determined burglar. It’s wise to take some precautions that will help you get your property back should a criminal successfully break into your home:

• Make an inventory list of your belongings (be sure to keep receipts, especially for expensive items like jewelry, electronics, computers and tools). Be sure to update this list periodically. Keep copies of your inventory list and receipts in a safe deposit box or with a friend. (This is also important in the event of a house fire.)

• Photographing and/or videotaping your possessions is a convenient way to keep a record of what you own.

• Engrave your valuables with an identification or mark to deter burglary and to prove ownership should the article be stolen and recovered by the police.

• Be sure you have the right coverage. You may need to purchase additional coverage to protect special items like expensive jewelry or rare antiques.
