Education is the future
At the dawn of the twenty first century, the world is facing a serious crisis which the media of communication
portray as unprecedented. Mass unemployment, poor life-quality in the cities and global warming are in the top headlines
of most newspapers they are with no doubt issues that deserve attention. However, there are many reasons to believe
that the problems related to technology, overpopulation and the environment can be solved having hope in mankind s
strongest card: education.
A large number of people still have a deep distrust of computers. What they ignore is that they are a force for
good in education. With the advent of information and communication technologies (ICTs), students of all ages are
becoming more attracted to learning. In fact, the Internet allows learners from different parts of the world to
communicate and experience language and culture in an innovative way. If social networks, wikis and virtual platforms
to mention only some of the most recent developments are used by educators, the results can be spectacular.
Overpopulation is claimed to be one of the most serious problems in Western society with ominous implications
resulting from overcrowding. Thus, life is becoming more stressful. But there is a growing trend towards educating the
mind by means of relaxations techniques. For example, Tai Chi Chung is an oriental discipline practised by many young
people in order to dispel tension and enhance life-quality. The Chinese highly value this type of education, which has
been practically unknown to the Occidental tradition. Notwithstanding overpopulation in the Eastern countries, people
live happier and they are a living proof that the hectic pace of life can be changed.
Scientists repeatedly insist on global warming and the loss of biodiversity - pollution is taking a heavy toll on our
planet. However, a pro green generation is growing up which will with no doubt reverse the downward trend. Never
before has the ordinary citizen been more aware of his responsibility for the care of the Earth. Plenty of educational
initiatives are aiming at pooling efforts in order to collectively tackle these postmodern problems. As a result, people are
growing organic vegetables, recycling paper and using synthetic fabrics. Education is the key since children learn the
healthy habits at school very quickly and pass on their knowledge to adults.
In conclusion, while there are reasons why mankind should worry about the future in connection to technology,
overpopulation and the environment, more emphasis should be placed on education as a cure for all of the post-modern
problems that affect us. It is clear, therefore, that society has a future and that the change should start from everyday life
things.
