WELCOMEBenjamin Franklin was one of the Found-

ing Fathers of the United States, a leading

author, printer, political theorist, politician,

postmaster, scientist, musician, inventor,

satirist, civic activist, statesman, and dip-

lomat. Most of all he was an entrepreneur,

someone who was willing to launch him-

self into a new venture and accept full re-

sponsibility for the outcome.

Everyone says enthusiasm, capacity to

overcome failure, and determination are

all necessary elements to become a suc-

cessful entrepreneur. But how do you find

the right idea, the right contacts, as well

as access to finance ,along with finding

the ability to advertise most effectively?

This is what young people need to know

when starting their journey as an entre-

preneur.

Our aim is to give you the opportunity to

find an answer to all these questions.

In the Entrepreneurship Summer School

Hong Kong, this is done in an innovative

and interactive framework that will give

you the chance to learn firsthand from

successful entrepreneurs.

At ThinkYoung, we truly believe that youth

is the engine that drives the future, and

that young entrepreneurs are the future of

the economy.

Our mission is to foster entrepreneurship

and lobby for three key points: access to

education and mentorship for young en-

trepreneurs, elimination of the stigma of

failure, and less bureaucracy for start-ups.

Be entrepreneurial,

ThinkYoung team

ABOUT US

What is ThinkYoungThinkYoung is a think-tank concerned with young people.

Why do we exist?

Rather simple, we are the next generation.

We believe it is imperative to empower and provide a voice

for young generations.

Through a variety of programs we aim to get our voices

heard by decision-makers.

ThinkYoung currently boosts a network of more than 250.000

young individuals involved in student organisations, and

various corporate and institutional connections in Europe

and Asia.

We are now based in Brussels and Geneva, aiming to es-

tablish an office in Hong Kong to unfold our Asia activities.

OUR BATTLES

EntrepreneurshipBecause young entrepreneurs are key to innovation and growth, we are acting to in-

spire young Europeans, boosting confidence levels and encouraging them to pursue

entrepreneurial dreams.

EducationThis is a particularly focal point at ThinkYoung. We invest in young people’s education

with a vision to create better citizens for tomorrow. Our goal is to develop an infra-

structure where we offer highly beneficial learning programmes.

EnlargementWe want to show young Europeans the diverse living conditions and the variety of

cultures within our continent. We think that mutual understanding is the first step in

improving integration and therefore European strength.

EU/AsiaWe aim to connect the European young generation with their Asian counterparts.

Through this, our goal is to extract the best practices in educational, entrepreneurial

and environmental cultures from the two environments, additionally highlighting simi-

larities and acquiring a greater degree of awareness.

Energy and EnvironmentWe want to ensure young Europeans have a say and allow them to raise their voice

on the matter. We want to improve a network across Europe, whilst sharing and en-

hancing knowledge on this topic.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Entrepreneurship Summer School Hong KongFollowing the success of the Entrepreneurship Summer Schools in

Brussels, ThinkYoung and the University of Hong Kong are presenting

the 1st edition of the Entrepreneurship Summer School Hong Kong.

No professors or teachers, only real entrepreneurs, ready to share their

ideas, experiences, and knowledge. In Hong Kong we welcome 40 par-

ticipants from various cultural, creative and occupational backgrounds,

offering a true international experience. The event will take place at the

grounds of the University of Hong Kong.

In addition to our workshops, we will provide a morning trip to the Hua-

wei HQ’s in Shenzhen to witness an example and hotbed of innovation

and entrepreneurial spirit.

9

Page 10: ESS HONG KONG 2013: SURVIVAL GUIDE

The ESS is unlike any other entrepre-

neurship learning program out there. This

is due to its unique methodology which

is driven by the idea that Entrepreneur-

ship goes beyond opening a business; it

is a life which enables people to turn their

ideas into action.

Therefore, we believe being a student of

entrepreneurship means you should learn

in a proactive and direct manner. This is

why at the ESS Hong Kong you will find

no professors, no books, and no lectures;

only real entrepreneurs passing on real

business experience directly to you, giv-

ing invaluable knowledge you cannot find

in books.

Active participationBy concentrating on concrete projects,

you can effectively work in teams to de-

velop the necessary skills to establish and

achieve goals, as well as gain confidence

through truly experiencing the satisfaction

of building upon your own ideas.

Each workshop output will be generated

by you, the participants, as it is your task

to interview the established entrepreneurs

to seek their views, principles, and (good)

practices, on a series of themes relating

to entrepreneurship. Each interview will

be designed and reviewed by teams of

nine who will be assigned their themes in

advance.

You will create your own guideThe overall goal is for each team to de-

velop their own outline guide to entrepre-

neurship, gathering information on all the

themes from interviews with each speak-

er. On the final day the eight teams will

give a formal presentation of their guide

and outcomes.

How it works: teams, speakers, themes.Overall, there are 41 participants that form

5 teams of 9 students.

There are 4 days of workshops.

Every day is divided into 2 sessions: morn-

ing and afternoon. In total 40 participants

will attend 5 workshop sessions.

Methodology of the School

10

Page 11: ESS HONG KONG 2013: SURVIVAL GUIDE

What happens in the interview rooms? Each of the 5 teams in the room is given

20 minutes with each speaker to interview

him or her about one of the 4 themes.

Each time the speaker rotates, the inter-

view theme changes as well. This means,

that each team and each class gets to

cover every one of the 4 themes.

It’s all about you!The invited speakers are here to act as

mentors, to inspire and to guide you.

However, the success of the workshops

relies much more on your own efforts.

The workshop output will be generated

entirely by you and your fellow partici-

pants. You learn to work in a team and to

collaborate with other entrepreneurs.

Remember, two heads are better than

one!

The workshop format gives you practi-

cal first-hand experience of organising

a learning event – real entrepreneurship

in action, not simulated business games.

The competitive element reflects the com-

petitive environment in which all entrepre-

neurs must survive.

Themes of the School:1. Entrepreneurial idea

2. Market and media

3. Resourcing your Entreprise

4. Networking
