    The t h i r d s p a c e c r a f t i n t h e s e r i e s , HEOS A - 1 , waslaun ched from Cape Kennedy, F l a . , by a Del t a r oc ke t onDecember 5 , 1 9 6 8 . I t s m i s s i o n i s to s t u d y t h e E a r t h ' sm a gne t i c f i e l d from a h ig hl y e l l i p t i c a l o r b i t r a ng in gup to 139,000 m i l e s above t h e E a r t h .
