In this issue we present a great selection of students’ writing and artwork related to the topics of Music and Spring. Just soak in, open your ears and your eyes. In this digital version of the magazine we have got quite few surprises for you! Some pages contain interactive elements (but-tons), try them out (click, click!) and see what happens. You will be taken places, have your speakers ready!

Some students have shared their opinions, you are encouraged to do so as well for another issue! What is more, another brilliant group activity is de-scribed - students seem to correspond more and more with well known peo-ple. This time the letter was sent to a very special person - award winning international Chef - Albert Roux. Do you have an idea who your class could write to?

Sweet time of Spring! I bet everyone is hoping for good weather and for Glasgow to become colourful with flowers starting to bloom. Watch out for an unexpected visitor! Our cover butterfly looks like it is almost ready to leave its spot and fly away. Maybe it will sit on your window sill?OASIS editor

    Students’ achievements: Rainbow of Recipes

Every day more and more bad news about politicians is heard. Ordinary people are getting annoyed and tired of information about politicians’ cor-ruption, impunity and love-affairs, their abuse of office and expenses. No won-der that their behaviour often has re-percussions in media. Persons involved in politics have existed for thousands of years but often were corrupt, arrogant and incompetent. That is why the public commonly criticize and even hate them.

Is it thus possible to live without politi-cians and would our life be better then? Those or similar questions have been asked for hundreds of years, especially when new political affair occurs. Journa-lists from leading broadsheets and tablo-ids challenge each other thinking up ori-ginal and unusual titles for their articles. However they probably cannot compete with Cicero, who described politicians in this strong and forcible way: „Politicians are not born, they are excreted”. Those words, written by the ancient Roman thinker, philosopher and orator, testify that politicians have always been contro-versial, even in the ancient civilizations.

These days most people believe that po-litics is „a dirty game” and politicians lie and waste public money. What is more they do not look out for public interests but for their own. In addition persons involved in politics are very active befo-re election and promise everything that their electors want and only say what they want to hear. Afterwards politicians forget their promises and „play their game” raising taxes and restricting wel-fare policy.

Since politics and politicians have so many drawbacks and they are global-ly criticized, we will ask: Why do they still exist?, and finally: Is it possible to „liquidate” them? Unfortunately no, be-cause nobody can imagine what a coun-

try without a President, Prime Minister or without the government would be like. Unfortunately politicians have to exist but for sure there are too many of them. A large number of politicians ge-nerate higher taxes and consequently poorer society. Everybody knows itbut nobody knows how to change it.

For many decades in the past powerful statesmen like: Roosevelt, Churchil, Hi-tler, Stalin, Mussolini or De Gaulle „ru-led” the world, demarcated the borders and decided on the fate of millions of people. After the Second World War for many years the President of the United States has been considered the most powerful person in the world. Howe-ver the world has been changed. In the last twenty years when the Information Technology, the Internet and social me-dia like Facebook and Twitter blew up, a new generation of rulers was born.

When on 17 February 2012 the US Presi-dent Barack Obama met with Marc Zuc-kenberg- the CEO of the world’s largest technology firms Facebook at a private dinner, New York magazine titled the story: „The world’s most powerful man meets President Obama”. At the time Zuckenberg’s company had over one bil-lion users.

Is it really the beginning of the end of political rulers in the world? Who knows, probably our life is too short to see what will happen.

Life would be better without politicians. To what extent is this statement true?

Do you agree with this statement? Or maybe you’ve got your own valid arguments?

Whether it’s about politics, life in the UK, studying or life experiences, share your opin-ion and it will be published under this section.

Students of ESOL do all sorts of amazing things with their teachers. Again, they proved that classes do not have to be predictable and thinking outside the box is very welcome! What fantastic activity did they come up with this time? Joining forces with Tourism students they created together Rainbow of Recipes, a booklet containing some really amazing ideas for meals to be prepared, which was then sent to a very special person...This Rainbow of Recipes is the result of over 50 ESOL and Tourism students coming together with a view to learning more about each other and exploring their cultural identities through the uni-versal and unifying theme of food. The students met to discuss their favourite recipes and then planned an International Cooking Event Day where they cooked and laughed together, sharing their knowledge and customs from their individual countries. Meaningful friendships were forged on that day and this book is testament to those and the dishes co-oked, some of which also had meaningful memories for the students. After it was all ready ESOL students (Access 3) with the help of their teacher Christine Palmer contacted one of the most famous chefs in Great Britain... and after waiting patiently for some time, the response from Albert Roux himself has arrived in their inbox! Congratulations, it must have felt amazing!Ask your teacher where you can get Rainbow of Re-cipes from. We hope you enjoy trying out some re-cipes from this rainbow of cultures. Enjoy cooking!

    Where am I now?

my new life because of the language barrier and cul-tural differences. I felt lost and had to start from the bottom again. Then one of my Iranian friends here told me to apply for ESOL classes and I did so. Not long after, I got an offer from City of Glasgow College.

How did you find the college and did you like it?From the first day I liked the teacher and the other students. My teacher Emily was very nice and help-ful. Unfortunately, there were no Iranian students in my class. However, there were students from all over the world; all of them were kind and friendly. I felt as if they were my new family. It was a great pleasure to see and talk to them every day. The structure of the course was excellent and we studied all language skills including listening, speaking, writing, reading, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, and with my teacher’s help my English improved massively and soon after Emily moved me to the higher class. What are the things that helped you improve your language skills?Focusing on the four skills reading, speaking, writing and listening is essential. It is not ideal to concen-trate on only one skill and leave the rest as it is crucial to be good at all of them. Also learning new words and studying grammar is fundamental. The reason my English has improved in such a short time is that I tried to balance between these four skills. I used to read the newspaper in the morning while I was on the bus on my way to the college and this helped with my reading skills and learning new vo-cabulary. I also used to borrow books from the col-lege library, it has very good resources and I strongly recommend the Penguin Readers stories, they are great fun and an excellent way to improve your read-ing and boost your confidence, as there are stories for all levels from access 1 to higher level. In terms of the speaking and listening I made a lot of friends so I can speak English with them and we used to go out together. The majority of my friends were not from my own country and this made me try to communi-cate with them only in English because they don’t un-derstand Farsi. For this reason my speaking improved tremendously. Furthermore, I used to watch English films with subtitles and listen to the radio; my favou-rite channel was Radio 4. The other thing that helped me expand my vocabulary and learn grammar is us-ing the BBC learning English and British Council web-sites. The internet has great resources for learning English language. I think every ESOL student should use the internet for learning. My best advice is to do your homework and give yourself plenty of time to do it. Don’t leave it to the last moment, especially the writing. In my opinion the most important thing

in the learning process is to use the new words you have learned as much as you can in your daily con-versation because that way you will remember them and they will be stored in your long-term memory. I strongly agree with the saying :“if you don’t use it you will lose it”.

What do you do now?I have a very busy life. I am studying a Psychology degree in Strathclyde University. It was always my dream to study Psychology and understand human nature. I love it and enjoy every moment of study-ing. Every ESOL student can study whatever they like if they study hard now and improve their language skills. Now because I am so occupied by my universi-ty tasks I don’t have any time to study the language so I would like to give you very good advice: your best opportunity to master your language skills is now while you are in college so don’t waste it.Why did you choose Psychology? I have always been fascinated by human nature, why people have different personalities and what makes us who we are. I wanted to know more about the individual behaviour, how our brain works. It would help me to learn how to interact with all kinds of peo-ple, especially children. It is a very interesting sub-ject. In addition to this I will understand myself and other people more. I am also keen on learning about mental health problems such as depression. Having a Psychology degree would open the door for me to a variety of careers such as counselling, clinical psy-chology and health psychology. I believe working as a psychologist will be fun and rewarding because it will help me make a difference in peoples’ lives. What are your plans for the future?I would like to complete studying at PHD level and get a job. I also want to get married and have a family. How important education in your opinion?Personally, I think education is vital for everyone because it provides a better future. Education gives us the critical skills to provide for ourselves and our families. It is definitely easier for an educated per-son to find a career. Moreover, education makes you knowledgeable and nobody can fool you because you will be more able to distinguish right from wrong. In my view, education means a brighter future.

Mehry is a former ESOL student. She is a bright young Iranian lady who is very ambitious, en-thusiastic and hardworking. In just two years, she managed to improve her English by attend-ing ESOL classes at City of Glasgow College and then studied an access course in order to prog-ress to higher education. Not only that, but she also made new friends and got to know more about the local culture in Scotland, where she now lives. At the moment she is studying at Strathclyde University. Having a difficult life and feeling lonely in a new country didn’t stop her from concentrating on her education and trying hard to achieve her goals.

What was like your life in Iran before coming to the UK?I lived all of my life in Iran and studied Persian litera-ture at University there. After finishing my university degree, I started working as a secretary for an Iranian company. I had a very happy life and a lot of friends. My family supported me during my studying and af-ter, they were always there for me no matter what. I miss them so much now. Because of some political issues, I decided to leave my country and come to the UK. At the beginning, it was really difficult to adapt to

Our ESOL students explain what music means to them and... what it means!

It happens to everyone once in a while that they like the song, but cannot

understand lyrics. ESOL students have taken care of that by producing some

exclusive and unique translations. Enjoy this little journey with international

    music!

Metallica’s concert, live in San Francisco

I love listening to the music. I listen to many genres of music, classical music, jazz, dance music, rock, metal and rap. I like musicals, opera or operetta. People express their feelings or moods through melodies or songs. The music heals, soothes or changes the mood. Musical concerts leave incredible expe-riences in humans. I’ve had one such an experience. The con-cert was Metallica and The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra it was a wonderful fusion of orchestral fineness with the hard and dangerous music of Metallica. Some of the songs sounded even better than the originals. It was just great. Music belongs in my life. Music is an art which does beautiful things to our world. by Mia Smrekova, Access 3

My favourite song is ONA TANCZY DLA MNIE by WEEKEND.My favourite lyric is SHE’s DANCING FOR ME because it is very positive. This song puts me in a good mood, It makes me want to dance and go to a party. This song is about a girl who is wonderful. The singer loves a girl and describes what he likes about her and describes his feelings for her.

“Ja uwielbiam ją. Ona tu jest

Spring in Scotland is the best season for sightseeing, it is perfect for hill walking and fishing. At this time of year, we have the big-gest chance of having good weather. However, it is worth remembering that constantly chang-ing weather creates an amazing aura in Scot-land – it becomes gloomy, mysterious, with shimmering colours of the rainbow and also, misty and grey. That is what makes this place unique, full of magic and very spectacular. In Spring, there are not a lot of rainy days, so we can spend our free time very actively. Scot-land looks green all the year, but, only in the spring sunshine it has this green lusciousness. The days get longer and warmer although the climate is cooler than it is in England, so it would be good to have a jacket with you. Spring is a wonderful time, when everything comes to life and everything looks very colourful. photos and text by Monika Filipiak, Access 3

Spring is the best season of the year. I love spring time because everywhere is green and the weather is beautiful. During spring time in my country every-body goes to the country side for a par-ty and a festival. People cook nice food, barbecue and kebab and sometimes they don’t get home until midnight.

English Translation:“It’s important to study from the cradle to the grave. Having the same heart is more important than having the same language.

When people are happy and relaxed like on the beach, they don’t see when you are drowning and feeling low. When you are alone and you wish someone was with you, think of them and you can

speak to them in your mind. Your heart is like Spring, new feelings and new beginnings.”

Welcome Spring – a poem by Abbas Hatampour, Access 3 (Persian-Farsi)
