Yes, we are planning a new season of Seller's Faires. The first Faire will be Saturday, March 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

The Eco Waste Company will be our first business guest com-pany. So while you are cleaning up after the holidays, set aside those

small electronics and bring them to the Faire for recycling.

Our favorite theme, Garage Sale, will kick off the season. Again while you are tidying up after the holidays, set aside any unused, tired items and bring them down to the Seller's Faire to sell.

Rob Enfield, (L) treasurer for the Hidden Meadows Community Foundation, presented a check for $937 to Fred Serfas, treasurer for the ARO, for the Parade of Homes event. The money will be used for the beauti-fication of the medians. The proceeds were also used to present a $50 check to Chris and Jacque Joslyn as well as Therisa Cash and Margaret Lesinsky, who tied for first place in the Outdoor Decorations Contest. Thanks to all who participated in the contest and contributed to the holiday cheer in Hidden Meadows.

Our Foundation Needs You

By Wendy Smith-Rogers Hidden Meadows has had an

established community founda-tion since 1999. Over the years the Hidden Meadows Community Foundation (HMCF) has spon-sored a variety of events such as a fashion show, Fiesta Night and a

golf tournament to raise funds for the benefit of our community. At this time, the Parade of Homes is our only established event.

In the past few years the Foundation’s membership has dwindled and thus there have been fewer and fewer events. I took over as president of the HMCF when past president, Tom Francl, moved because I hate to see it die. Treasurer Rob Enfield and I are seeking more members to help us breathe new life into the Foundation. We are look-ing for people who love Hidden Meadows, who would be amena-

ble to meeting once a month in the evenings, who can help generate ideas on fundraising, who are will-ing to help implement the ideas, and who like to have fun.

An informational meeting will be held on Monday, February 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the Pavilion for anyone who is interested in know-ing more about the Foundation, or is willing to serve as a director on the board or a worker bee for fundraising events. If you can-not make the meeting, but would love to help, please contact me at [email protected] or 760-749-5652.

The ARO-sponsored Hidden Meadows Artisan Guild will be hosting its first art show and sale on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1 in the Pavilion. Members will be displaying their work in a variety of media, such as watercol-or, oil, acrylic, silk painting, fab-ric, Chinese painting, mosaic, clay, and more! Mark your calendars now for chance to view the amaz-ing talent within our community.

It's that time of the year again--time to start gathering together everything you don't want or need anymore. Our community garage sale will be the first Saturday in May or, in case of rain, the sec-ond Saturday. This year will be somewhat of a challenge since we lost one of our biggest advertising

tools, The PennySaver. If anyone has any ideas (except Craigslist) in this department please contact Linda Kennedy at 760-715-3690.

It will cost $1.00 again this year to put your address on the map. We will be at the Seller's Faire in March and April with a signup sheet. The dollar is to help pay for the signs, the maps and whatever advertising we can come up with. Let's all join together and make this the best one yet.

Boulder Oaks Golf Club to Open February 6!By Wayne Dauber

The two big items of interest this month are about openings. Naturally I will take the second one first.

Last month I passed on the planned opening date of January 1 for the first nine holes of our renamed “Boulder Oaks Golf Course” and my skeptical opin-ion of that date. By the end of December the anticipated open-ing date had been pushed back to January 23 and El Nino turned out to be a mischievous child, wreak-ing havoc in the form of erosion on much of the course, severe in places. The golf course manage-ment just informed me they will be opening on February 6.

I was told back then that the back nine holes would open first, followed by the front nine some-time later in February. I assume they are planning for a split open-ing, with the new back nine to

open first and the remaining holes a month or so later. Again the weather will have a lot of influence on the final schedule. I understand the course will stage a grand open-ing when all of the holes are ready for play.

All hole number references are still confusing to a lot of us so I will include this table of old and new hole numbers until the course actually opens. Note again that the old holes numbered 18, 1, and 2 have each been split into two holes to compensate for the area occu-pied by old hole numbers 10, 11, and 12 no longer being in play.The second opening I mentioned last month, the “Meadow Oaks Bar and Grill” in the club house opened a couple of weeks before Christmas. The restaurant is also planning to stage a grand opening in coordination with the golf course's opening event. I have seen a number of comments in the Town Crier and on the Nextdoor Hidden Meadows web site. The

comments have for the most part been very favorable and some have included some constructive comments and suggestions. Our own experience there has been very good and it is clear they are trying to provide us with a restaurant the community will support and enjoy. We want a good restaurant here. If we support it well they have the enthusiasm and will to provide us with a good and lasting dining experience.

One last thing, I mentioned a featured signature hole at the end of last month's article. I said it was the number five hole but in fact the signature hole is number six, where the configuration of boulders and Engelmann Oaks provide inspiration for the new name of the course. Number six, as you can see from the table above is now the first half of old number eighteen.

I have noticed some of us are not getting the information we are af-ter from the CrimeMapping.com site. There are several features on the site that you can use to improve your experience.

If you enter your address the map will be centered on that address and it defaults to a coverage area which is a circle around that point with an adjustable radius, the de-fault of which is one mile. You can

set the radius from several options up to two miles. My preferred op-tion is to “Delete Radius”. This make the reported coverage area the same as the area shown on your screen.

The next option is to reset the coverage dates. I have found that the program allows us to go back about five weeks. This works pret-ty well, and if you have deleted the radius limitation

If you have done this and now move the map around you will see some interesting comparisons between the incident level in our community and some of the areas surrounding us. We are pretty for-tunate and I believe that is thanks to the efforts you and your neigh-bors take to protect yourselves and your properties. Good work, neighbors.

On December 17th, a group of very merry ladies from the Hidden Meadows Women's Social Group gathered in the home of the crazy Christmas lady, Valerie Targia. The awesome decorations, a lot of them handmade by Valerie, were admired by everyone, Most of the ladies competed for best, outland-ish Christmas sweaters and hats. Some beautiful Christmas orna-ments were exchanged, and deli-cious food and wine was enjoyed amid constant happy conversation. The warmth of friendship and laughter filled the house until ev-eryone left overflowing with of the spirit of the holidays.

It’s February…have you been getting your exercise? Walking and hiking are two of the most uncomplicated ways to enhance your cardiovascular health. All you need are some good shoes and maybe a hat. The bonus of living in Hidden Meadows is that it has the perfect terrain for REALLY getting your heart pumping – roads like roller coasters!

Try one of these walks to ex-plore the 'hood, get fit, feel good, and make your dog happy, too. You can view many of these routes on Google Maps, which has great aerial views of the Meadows.

EASY: Oak Ranch RambleRoute: Park near the Deli, walk behind the buildings, and go along Oak Ranch Road and back. Distance:~0.5 miles, 10 minutesVisual rewards: Seeing a small, gated community of well-kept town homes with lovely mature landscaping.

EASY: Moon View MeanderRoute: Start at the T intersection of Meadow Glen Way and Grassy Way. Walk along Grassy Way, go right on Moon View, then right onto Meadow Glen to return to your car.Distance: ~0.6 miles, ~14 minutesVisual rewards: Viewing cool front yards and well-kept custom homes.

MODERATE: Sage Hill SashayRoute: Park at the intersection of Meadow Glen Way East and Sage Hill Way. Go right along Sage Hill and left on Glenmeade, which loops back to Sage Hill. Go left to

Turn around and on your way back take Quail View Drive (a cul-de sac), then go back to High Vista. CHALLENGING: Golf Course GroanerRoute: Park near the Deli. Walk east along Meadow Glen Way East to Hidden Meadows Road. Go left and continue to Mountain Meadow Road. Turn right to return to the Deli.Distance: ~2.8 miles, ~1 hourVisual rewards: Glimpsing many of the changes being made to the golf course and enjoying views to the south and east.

CHALLENGING: Cougar Pass ChallengeRoute: Park at the end of Hidden Meadows Road (heading away from the freeway before you take the first left. Walk North on Hidden Meadows Road, turn right on Meadow Glen Way East and veer right on Cougar Pass Road. At Alps way turn right to stay on Cougar Pass road and travel the dirt road to get to the entrance of Daley Ranch.Distance: ~2.4 miles, ~48 minutesVisual rewards: If you haven’t been down this way lately check

out all the avocado trees they have cut down. It is very sad. Cougar pass has amazing views of our community. If you have more time and energy why not venture into Daley Ranch. There are some amazing hikes in Daley Ranch.

KILLER: Meadow Mesa Madness Route: Park near the intersection of Mountain Meadow Road and Meadow Mesa. Walk up the steep hill to the end of the cul-de-sac, and then go back down. Distance: ~1.2 miles, ~36 minutesVisual rewards: Near-panorama views of Hidden Meadows to the south, the ocean to the west, Palomar Mountain and Valley Center to the east and the Lagunas to the north.

KILLER: Sage Hill StairmasterRoute: Park at Meadow Glen Way West and Sage Hill Way. Go north-west up Sage Hill to where the road ends, then turn around. Check out the Gladstone Court cul-de-sac on your way back. Distance: ~0.6 miles, ~ 30 minutesVisual rewards: See some of the Meadows' most interesting homes, built around immense boulders with decks that cantilever over steep drop-offs.

KILLER: Lotus Pond Elliptical (by invitation only)Route: Please call me if you would like to try this challenging yet re-warding hike and I can join you! Park at my house and walk down-hill to the lane's lowest point, then turn around and go back up. We used this hill to train for our Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike and it is a lung burner. Distance: ~1 mile, ~30 minutesVisual rewards: A hidden canyon in Hidden Meadows with a pond at the bottom. If you want more you can walk up the hill to the gate and come back to my house or call someone to come get you!

On January 15th, twenty-four members of the Garden Club met at the home of Dave and Lisa Lonsdale for their annual Schedule Planning Meeting. With temperatures in the 50’s, it was a good morning to have an indoor meeting. The kitchen quickly filled with a cacophony of wel-coming voices as everyone en-joyed a hot cup of coffee or tea and some cookies and homemade zucchini bread. The group was called to order with the thanking of Françoise Geiser for agreeing to remain the president of the group for a second year. Four new mem-ber were introduced: Pat Witman (a thirty-seven-year resident of the Meadows), Lynn Allen & Judy Dunn (residents for less than one year) and Barbara Rangan (resi-dent of Jesmond Dene.) Welcome to all of you.

We moved on to the business of

planning our schedule, starting out with a chaos of ideas and smooth-ing them out into a full schedule for the next eleven months. Some of the activities are as follows: Olive Oil Farm Tour & Tasting, Safari Park Botanical Tour, San Diego Botanical Gardens Tour, Winery Tour and Tasting, Pumpkin/Succulent Planting and Wreath Making. Thanks to all the participants, the great ideas and for volunteer hosts, coordinators and helpers who will make the ac-tivities happen. Final details of the schedule are being worked out but the hour and a half jam session was deemed a success.

After the meeting, Lisa took the group on a quick tour of her winter vegetable garden and greenhouse and distributed milkweed plants for the 2016 Monarch Butterfly season. Native Milkweed seeds are still available, so contact Lisa if you are interested in growing some this spring. The group also admired some of the blooming succulents around the yard, espe-cially pink-flowered Kalanchoe. Moving out of the cold and back into the house, a portion of the at-tendees enjoyed their brownbag lunches amidst a variety of con-versation topics that ranged from gardening to rattlesnakes to food.

How often have you thought about the kids at Christmas who don't find anything under the tree? Well, this year there will be 450 kids enjoying gifts who otherwise might not receive gifts, thanks to the ARO Toys For Tots event in

Hidden Meadows. There were also 150 smaller stocking stuffers donated. This happy situation hap-pened as a result of a record turn-out of our residents at the Hidden Meadows Toys for Tots breakfast on December 5th. We are proud to say there were 208 generous Hidden Meadows attendees who participated in the delicious Toys For Tots breakfast and donated gifts.

The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. In communities without a Reserve Unit, the campaign can be con-ducted by a Marine Corps League Detachment or group of men and

women, generally veteran Marines, authorized by Marine Toys For Tots Foundation to conduct a local Toys For Tots campaign. Assisting the Hidden Meadows ARO with the Toys For Tots breakfast event was a U.S. Marine Corps volunteer group from HUGS (Humanitarian, United and Giving), led by Debra Anderson.

Special recognition goes to all the bakers and servers who volun-teered their time and effort toward helping the ARO with this event. And Santa deserves a big shout out too. He did a jolly good job of listening to all the children in attendance. The weather was so beautiful the morning of the break-fast that people were able to sit on the veranda of the Pavilion and en-joy their breakfast in nature. We are already anxiously anticipating next year's Toys For Tots breakfast and the good that will come of it!

The Parade of Homes and Christmas Boutique lit up the community on Sunday, December 13. Beginning at the boutique, par-ticipants shopped at the variety of booths for holiday gifts hand made

Here is yet another example of why people learning English have trouble with the language. Learning the nuances of English makes it a difficult language. (But then, that's probably true of many languages.)

There is a two-letter word in English that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is 'UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as being used as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v].

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awak-en in the morning, why do we wake UP?

At a meeting, why do topics come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends and we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.

At other times the little word has a real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.

We open UP a store in the morn-ing but we close it UP at night. We

seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets UP the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on & on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now.........my time is UP! So, can you come UP with any other examples?

Phenomenal Two Letter WordAssociation of Resident Owners

of the Hidden Meadows/Rimrock Area – ARO

Organized in 1973 for social, civic, and lobbying purposes, the ARO has changed its mission to be the social well being of the com-munity. The ARO sponsors events for all of the area residents living in the ARO community. The ARO receives funding from the various Home Owners Associations and each year asks members of the community to join the ARO for dues of $25.00. With the dues the ARO has events such as the Toys For Tots Breakfast, Easter Egg Hunt, Parade of Homes, 4th of July Parade and Barbeque, Trunk or Treat, and several other social activities. The ARO publishes the Meadowlark as a service to the community. The Meadowlark pub-lishes articles of community inter-est and information on upcoming social events. The Meadowlark welcomes articles from all resi-dents, associations and community organizations. The ARO sponsors the Social Groups and other com-munity organizations and events. The ARO has donated the tables and chairs used at the pavilion to the MHA. The ARO has also placed the benchs in the MHA park area and the Garden Stepping Stones in the Lifetime Volunteer Park. The ARO is the main com-munity entity in the maintenance of the median strip.

Hidden Meadows Community Foundation

The Foundation offers residents

an avenue for community partici-pation in the life of the Meadows. Through the tax-deductible gifts of residents and fundrais-ers each year, the Foundation is able to focus on two main pro-grams: Beautification Projects and Scholarships for graduating high school seniors. In addition, we may give aid in time of need to individuals who find themselves in disastrous situations.

One of the latest projects of the Foundation has been the Park area of the Meadows Homes Association, with the purchase of the picnic table with benches. The Foundation also helps support the maintenance of the median strip at the entrance to the main portion of the community on Mountain Meadow Road.

The Meadows Homes Association – MHA

The Meadows Homes HOA is comprised of approximately 570 homes in and around the Boulder Oaks Golf Club. MHA is the larg-est association in the area. MHA is a non-profit organization char-tered primarily to enforce build-ing codes and the community's CC&Rs. MHA owns and operates the Hidden Meadows Pavilion, tennis court, swimming pool and the related grounds, as well as thir-teen of the community's roads.

Use of the MHA Pavilion and facilities is available to members of the MHA. Many of our commu-nity's groups, boards and classes

meet here as well. If you do not live in the MHA, use of the facili-ties is available on a yearly basis by paying the same assessment as members of the MHA pay.

The MHA is a separate entity and dues paid to the MHA, or any other Association, do not support the other community organiza-tions.

Deer Springs Fire Safe Council – DSFSC

The Deer Springs Fire Safe Council is a volunteer organiza-tion that provides education to our area and the entire Fire Protection District to preserve lives, property and natural resources by mobiliz-ing all members of our community to make our neighborhoods fire safe. The Council conducts neigh-borhood meetings throughout the entire area to make all of us bet-ter informed. The Council operates the Emergency Communications System, which includes the Reverse 9-1-1 calling system and lookout stations. Sawa-i-lau Cave in Fiji

Fijian people are among the friendliest in the world and are characterized by their cheerful 'Bula' greetings, always accom-panied with a big grin. And don’t be surprised when they remember you from a prior visit!

You will immediately feel at home among Fijians and you cer-tainly won't find it difficult to re-lax into their laid-back way of life, called 'Fiji Time'. One thing you'll instantly recognize is that the Fijian way of life is based largely on their history and traditional ceremonies that are passed down from one generation to the next for centuries.

Fiji flight #811 arrived right on time in Fiji at 5:30 a.m., I cleared customs in the Nadi airport. Then I was off for my first resort inspec-tion at 6:30 a.m. I chose Raffles Gateway Resort, because I haven’t seen it before, it’s opposite the air-port. It’s such a convenient place to relax poolside before the late Fiji Air flight back to the U.S. It’s also a great place for stop over’s on the way to Australia & New Zealand, to catch some sleep or refresh by the pool. The next inspection was

the Westin Resort & Spa and home of the Westin bed. Yes, it’s very nice, but no beach. But they do have an adult only pool area that is nice and quiet.

The Fiji Princess is a small boutique ship, with sixty-eight passengers, if fully booked. She sails the Mamanuthas & Yasawa Islands year round. Allowing chil-dren only on a few select dates. One of our adventures off the ship is a stop at the Sawa-i-lau caves! It was even more spectacular this trip than last year. It's a dive into the unknown. You need a modi-cum of courage, as you scrape your head along the rock in the dark be-neath. But it's only by visiting this inner sanctum, say the Fijians, that you actually arrive at the heart of the Yasawas, the islands created by a dramatic fault that runs into the South Pacific on the north-western fringe of Fiji. When the tide is high, both chambers are under wa-ter and in pitch darkness. At less than high tide, the "curtain" is just a few centimetres out of the water. To get to the inner limestone cham-bers of Sawa-i-Lau, you must dive under a rocky curtain and swim through an underwater tunnel. It's not completely black in the cave: there's a vent dropping down on the way in, through the limestone walls and ceiling from the tall, rocky island above. But it's black

enough to make the nervous quea-sy and you will need a torch inside. The outer cave is a tall atrium, well lit through its southern side, which is open. The inner sanctum is very different. Most of the twenty me-ter long space is little more than a low gap between the sea water, at whatever the tide, and the roof.

They say there no sign of sea life in here, although the guide tells us there are small eels in there . . . somewhere.

This trip we were there at low tide, making the turquoise blue water color more intense and the clearest that I have seen. Did I mention that the water is cold? Our bonus for going into the sec-ond chamber this trip, was being able to swim into a third chamber! It was mesmerizing with a shaft of sunlight beaming down from above. Only when you’ve visited this cave, say the villagers, can you say that you have been to the Yasawas.

After our cruising the Mamanuthas & Yasawa Islands and our island resort stays, I chose to visit the Coral Coast area be-cause I have not been there before. And it was time for a little adven-ture nearby! The drive is about an hour south of Denarau. We stayed at the Outrigger on the Lagoon, our home for the evening. While larg-er than the island resorts, it didn’t appear that large because of all the well laid out tropical gardens, that were well kept up beautifully. It’s very reminiscent of the Castaway Island resort, then to find out, it was the same owner many years ago. The shops in the main build-ing had a real nice selection of clothing and gifts; sure, I checked them all out. At the Sundowner

restaurant on the beach, I enjoyed the best meal of this trip and the Sundowner it wasn’t even the high end restaurant of the resort. What better way to end a holiday – Fiji giving us a beautiful sunset. What a way to spend our last night in Fiji!

JetBoat Safari - At 8 a.m. we were picked up by our mini-coach driver, who transferred us to the base in Sigatoka town. At the de-parture point surrounded by Fijian natural beauty, we received our life jackets and safety briefing from our jet boat captain, “Magic Mike” and then it's time to board. As we began our seventeen km scenic cruise into the Sigatoka fertile valley area known as the "salad bowl” of Fiji. Mike did a few slow 360 degree spins, so we didn’t get soaked. Along the way, you will hear about the history of the region, including its cannibal past! Women and children were along the banks doing their daily chores. The Sigatoka River is the longest river on the island of Viti Levu, running from the hills of the Navosa Province right down to the sand dunes in Kulukulu, on the famous Coral Coast. When we reached our landing point for the village, we, both men and women had to a put on our sulu’s (sarongs) as respect to the Fijians. It was an uphill walk on uneven terrain,

to reach VillageToga. Once there, we were greeted warmly and were taken into the community hall. You have to take your shoes off before entering the community hall, it’s a custom. The village chief wel-comed us and accepted our gift of Kava. We were told about the vil-lage way of life and how to partake in a kava ceremony. Then we were given a tour of the village, while the ladies set up our traditional Fijian lunch, which you eat while seated on the floor. It was local Fijian dishes ending with won-derful fresh tropical fruit. I found myself going back for thirds. But then I am used to the food, I felt sorry for the little boy who only ate chicken fingers! The villagers said they only go to town to purchase sugar, salt and flour, everything else they live off the land. Our village visit ended with traditional Fijian farewell song, Isa-lei. Then it was time to board our jet boat again for the return trip. Sigatoka River Safari is careful to visit a dif-ferent village every day, to mini-mize the impact of tourism on the village lifestyle in this remote part of the world.

This is where “Magic Mike” showed off his skills with his fast, water soaking 360 degree spins. Did I mention Adrenalin Rush? It was refreshing in the heat of the day. Lucky for us, we were pre-pared to come with a change of dry clothes that we left in a locker, so, we enjoyed a dry ride back to the resort. Would I do it again? Most certainly, the Sigatoka river ride is so beautiful.

When you plan your next trip, please consider checking out PackForAPurpose.org. Since the 1970’s, I have usually taken candy, pens and pencils where ever I trav-eled for children. Then I found this web site called, PackForAPurpose.org. The website updates month-ly and tells you what is currently needed by an orphanage, village or school in the country that you are traveling to. Check it out be-fore you travel to see what you can do to help the people of the coun-tries you are interested in traveling to. It only takes a little space to help someone. Think about pack-ing items in your shoes, in odd spaces in your suitcase.

For this latest trip to Fiji, I packed thirteen pounds of cray-ons, coloring books, and school supplies. One soccer ball, a back pack, Halloween pencils, pens & erasers. The tooth paste & tooth brushes, skin crèmes and pre-na-

tal vitamins were all donated by my personal doctors, Dr. Charles Mastrovich and Dr. Nancy Chen of Escondido and Dr. Karen Lee of Solana Beach. The crayons and coloring books were courtesy of my favorite Escondido bank, First Rebuplic Bank.

When I returned home, I went in to thank Dr.Chen, she said to let her know anytime I need anything. Her nurse asked if I wanted to start collecting supplies right now for my next trip!

Treasure House Orphanage is

in Nadi near the airport and houses twenty-seven children ranging from two weeks to seventeen years old, in a four bedroom house. Since I didn’t have time to go to Treasure House, I had planned to drop all of the items off with Rosie Holidays at the Westin in Denarau. My friend, Maureen Young who works for Rosie’s would see that the thirty-nine boxes of crayons, coloring books and the soccer ball were delivered to Treasure House.

Next, the Yasawa high school in the Yasawa Islands got pencils and pens like last year. This time I let the staff hand them out, because last year I got mobbed while hand-ing them out!

The rest of the items went to Kese village and the Kese Health Centre on Naviti Island which was established in 1970 and supports five settlements, three schools and five villages. It is staffed by only one nurse and helps roughly 500 children and 315 pregnant women each year. Much of the support provided there is for maternal, in-fant care and community health. To

get these donations to Kese village on Naviti Island, I had to plan. I had to be on the Fiji Princess, four day sailing going up to the Yasawa Islands. I know that on day three, while anchored at Drawaqa Island they have Dan Bowling, a local Marine Biologist, Dive Control Specialist Instructor and Vinaka Fiji Marine Program Coordinator comes on board to share what they are doing to help Fiji in protect-ing their natural resources. They are studying the sometimes elusive giant Manta Rays, I say elusive; because I have missed swimming with them both times when they are supposed to be in season. Dan has introduced clams back to the local area. To the extent of going under water to clean them off with tooth brushes! After Dan’s lec-ture, I asked if he could take the donations to Kese. He asked if it was for “Pack For A Purpose”? Yes, of course he would! Then I ran back to my stateroom to get the donations for Kese. THIS AND THATVery little news as we have played very little golf because holidays and weather have cancelled golf. We are now back in the groove though. We are still playing at Eagle Crest Golf Course, anxiously waiting for Boulder Oaks (formerly Meadow Lake) Golf Course to re-open. Lots of setbacks with the bad weather and more expected in the next few months.

We held our general meeting on January 14 at Eagle Crest after golf. Nothing to report from the meeting.

Airports are hubs for more than just flights. Complaints fly nearly constantly across check-in desks, customer-service counters, and gates at every airport in every city in the world. And, sure, with de-layed flights and bad seats galore, there's plenty for passengers to rightfully complain about.

But with so many gripes, the best way to be heard when you have a problem is to rise above the din. Here are our tips for com-plaining the right way next time something goes wrong for you at the airport.

Center Yourself: Anger is likely fueling your complaint, but all that rage and indignation will work against you when it comes to negotiating a satisfactory out-come. Before you lodge your com-plaint, take a minute to breathe deeply and re-center. Once you feel calmer, you'll be able to order your thoughts, complain strategi-cally, and recognize a reasonable outcome when it comes your way.

Don't Be a Jerk: Don't put your listener on the defensive with abusive language, eye rolling, fist pounding, or, that old classic, the

nostrils-flared, jaw-clenched com-bo. Instead, before you start your complaint, take a moment to say hello and make eye contact.

Know What You Want: Effective complaining requires you to know what you want. Don't leave it up to the gate agent to read your mind and know what you would consider a reasonable reso-lution. Before you start, decide what you hope to get out of the complaint—for instance, food or hotel vouchers, a reimbursement, or airfare credit.

Be Reasonable: Know what you want, but be reasonable about it. A delayed flight doesn't war-rant an upgrade to first class. And remember that the person you're talking to can't make a flight board faster or a plane come sooner. Make your requests reasonable and you'll have a much higher chance of seeing your needs met.

Choose Your Wording: Saying "I demand" or "I insist" is a bad way to present your reasonable request. It cuts off any negotiation and puts the person you're talking to on the defensive from the get-go. Instead, try something less instantly confrontational, such as, "Here's what I think seems rea-

sonable," or "This is what I would like."

Make a Complaint Sandwich: Win over your listener with this classic strategy by starting with an "ear opener": something that plays on the sympathies of the person you're talking to. Then state your request and follow it up with a phrase or sentence that will moti-vate the listener to help you. For example, if you get to the airport and realize the aisle seat you paid extra for has, on your boarding pass, turned into a dreaded middle seat, you might say something like, "I've been flying with your airline for years, and I have generally been very happy with the service. The aisle seat I reserved has been changed to a middle seat, and I'd like to get it switched back. I really want to continue being a happy and loyal customer, so I would ap-preciate if you could help me get an aisle seat."

Ask a Question: If you're at an impasse, ask the airline employee what they would do in your situ-ation. Another way to help them see you as a reasonable person is by asking them how they think the problem can best be solved.
