From the ES Administrationrom the ES AdministrationDear Elementary School Parents,
Filipiniana has been an event happening at ISM for manyyears, in the Elementary School the past few years it asincluded an assembly followed by a Barrio Fiesta with theES playground becoming a festive area with huts, Filipinodishes and delicacies for our children to enjoy, traditionalgames to play, Jeepney rides, and a parade of High Schoolstudents and marching bands. This has been an excitingtime for students and a celebration for our ElementarySchool.
In light of the recent natural disaster in Manila and theeffect it has had, we have been reflecting on the most ap-propriate focus of this event. We would like to reframethis day somewhat and make it more meaningful for stu-dent learning about the Philippines and our response tothe current situation as a community. Our day will nowbe A Window into the Philippines
We will begin the day on Friday October 23, 2009 with awhole ES assembly at 8:00 in the Fine Arts Theatre. Thiswill begin with a music video of the country, followed by a

From the CMCrom the CMC
Dear Parents,
Recycled materials are continu-ally being utilized in our early
years art projects. In fact thegrade 1 fairground project whichis comprised mainly of boxes, plastic containers and parts ofbroken toys will next week beexhibited in the CMC, you arewelcome to visit. We thereforenow need to replenish our stocksof recyclable materials. In particular we are looking for small boxes, bottle caps (metal or plastic), broken or functioning toys, utensils, small plastic containers (including take out food tubs) and any other
object you are discarding that you think we could use. Please ensurethat none of the materials have sharp edges or contain any traces offood. Drop offs to room 1189 would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Olivia [email protected]
From the Art Departmentrom the Art DepartmentI am looking for some volunteer
parents who could help create art
labels for the classroom in variouslanguages. Volunteers need to be
native speakers and writers of the
following Mandarin, Korean,
Japanese, Thai and Dutch. This is
not a big job and your assistance
would be much appreciated. The
labels can be handwritten, or
printed from a computer. They
would be of specific art vocabulary
which we are reinforcing in class.
So far, only about ten words! Can
you help? If so, please contact meat [email protected].
Many thanks,
Helen Arnold
Hello Parents! The Childrens Media Center ishumming with activity! We launched our CMC
Book Club for grade 4 students last week. Wereceived lots of very convincing applicationsbut, alas, had to limit our membership to just 12.Well run another Book Club next semester, sotheres a second chance!
Preschool and ECLC children have settled into their brows-ing and borrowing routines and are showing such responsible be-havior! Please reinforce how to care for books at home. Grade 1 stu-dents are able to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction booksand are learning where to find books about their favorite subjects orby a favorite author. Grade 2 used non-fiction books to researchhabitats and animals and will be practicing using our new library
search engine, Destiny Quest, this week. Grade 3 students are focus-ing on making personal connections to stories and some classes areusing non-fiction books to learn about the affects habitats have onpeople. Grade 4 classes are using non-fiction books to help them cre-ate realistic characters for their migration stories and passports forImmigration Island.
Its important to teach our children that books arent just forinformation, that its fun to read! Try to spend fifteen minutes eachevening, reading with your child. Reading aloud teaches sequenceand voice, builds vocabulary, and demonstrates left to right text di-rection. Children love spending time with you and a good book!
The Physical Education De-
partment now has a green
box in the Plaza with sportsequipment for children to use during
their play time. It has jump ropes, (short,
long and Double Dutch ropes) balls of many
sizes and shapes and Frisbees. Grade 2, 3
and 4 children are allowed to borrow equip-
ment but need to hand in their school ID to a
supervisor who is stationed at the green
box. At the end of play when children return
the borrowed equipment they will be given
back their school ID. This system helps students
be responsible. We continue to emphasize
that all sports equipment be used safely andproperly. You can assist us as parents by
playing jump rope with your children,
(teaching them Jump Rope Chants) throwing a
Frisbee, or simply playing throw and catch
with a ball. Our purpose is
to encourage children to
be active, learn safe be-
haviors when using sports
equipment and be respon-
sible.

WELCOME

Grade 1 fairground exhibition in theCMC at any time during the next
week (from Oct 12th - 16th).The exhibition is the collaborative
achievement of all grade 1 studentswho have constructed these art
pieces almost entirely from recycla-ble materials.

Hey 4th Graders!!!
Its time to ask yourself those all-important questions about yourself ~ Do I like to sing? Do I like to act? Do I like to
dance? Do I like to dress up in costumes? Do I like to perform in front of audiences? Do I like to do all of the above
with my friends?
If you answered yes to some or all of these, then we want you to be a part of this years Childrens Musical Theater.
We will be presenting the youth musical Dig It which is a fun and comical story about ancient civilizations around
the world.
