Europen Train Control System (ETCS)

Europen Railways Traffic Management System

(ERTMS=ETCS + GSMR)

ETCS, the European Train Control System, is an automatic

train protection system (ATP) to replace the existing national

ATS-systems.

GSM-R, a radio system for providing voice and data

communication between the track and the train, based on

standard GSM using frequencies specifically reserved for rail

application with certain specific and advanced functions.

ETCS LEVEL 1 SIGNAL SYSTEM

• Point motion transmission

• Permanent on-vehicle speed control

• If necessary conventional signal system can be used

• Communication infrastucture is fiber optic

• Interlocking is free from communication

ETCS LEVEL 2 SIGNAL SYSTEM

• Continuous motion transmission

• Permanent on-vehicle speed control

• Conventional signal system is unnecessary

• Communication infrastucture is fiber optic and GSM-R.

ETCS LEVEL 3 SIGNAL SYSTEM

• There is not block formation, there is in motion block

• Continuous motion transmission

• Permanent on-vehicle speed control

• Conventional signal system is unnecessary

• Communication infrastucture is fiber optic and GSM-R.
