Research achievements

Research focus areas

In my research, I have a strong focus on intercultural communication in Danish-German

context. Furthermore, my other research approaches involve the interdisciplinary exploration

of formalized language and the lexicon at the intersection of the language system, language use

and the linguistic competence of the language user. Central questions concern the description

of the content of (vocabulary units) and relations within the lexicon in theoretical, applied and

cross-linguistic disciplines as well as the relation between language and culture:

˗ Intercultural communication: Interculturality and intercultural skills in foreign language

teaching and business communication. Development of research based teaching materials

aiming to raise linguistic and cultural awareness in German and Danish within the SMiK-

project.

˗ Danish-German communication as a specific field of intercultural communication with

focus on business communication and communication in organizations.

˗ Stereotypes: Exploration of stereotypes as patterns of thinking and categorization as well

as linguistic (word, multiword unit, text and discourse) and non-verbal actions at the

intersection between language and culture. Design of questionnaires and corpus analysis

for the collection and description of German and Danish stereotypes (a) in the speakers

linguistic and cultural knowledge and (b) as they manifest in written language.

˗ Foreign language acquisition and language didactics (German as a foreign language)

from a cultural and linguistic perspective, focusing on the interplay of vocabulary and

grammar in a communicative context (text and content based language learning,

multimodality).

˗ Cross-linguistic research in all areas of language description incl. grammar.

Page 8: Erla Hallsteinsdóttir CVhallsteinsdottir.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/...2018/06/07  · Erla Hallsteinsdóttir – CV 2 Curriculum Vitae Name: Erla Hallsteinsdóttir (born 14.06.1970

˗ Word formations in the language system, in language use and from a cognitive perspective

in a cross-linguistic approach.

˗ Phraseology as an interdisciplinary discipline that deals with all areas of language and

culture description in the broadest sense with focus on (1) phraseodidactics, (2) cognitive

aspects and the phraseological competence, (3) equivalence in phraseology (in the

linguistic system and in language use (texts)), (4) phraseology in dictionaries and (4)

phraseology in corpora (frequency, corpus based description).

˗ Corpus linguistics: compilation of corpora and frequency dictionaries and method

development, especially in relation to the intersection of cognitive aspects of language and

the language system.

˗ Lexicography and the history of the German-Icelandic lexicography.

˗ Translation research: translation theory and practice as a complex understanding and

writing process and analysis, characterization and evaluation of translations.

˗ Text linguistics (‘Leipziger Schule’): inclusion of both linguistic and non-verbal aspects of

texts as a complex cultural phenomenon that are analyzed and described in their socio-

cultural and communicative contexts.

˗ Multilingualism with focus on how to advance competences in the neighboring languages

in the Danish-German border region with small language and culture projects. Furthermore,

multilingualism in the Danish-German communication by the example of the

communication in kultKIT.

Research projects and results

Intercultural understanding in Danish-German organizational communication: is a

planned research activity in the new kultKIT project that will start on the of August 1th 2018 if

Interreg allows the application (budget 1,9 m. Euro, decision on June 20th, 2018). The research

activity is based on an innovative participative approach to research in intercultural

communication, whereby the project partners from the Danish and German municipalities

(Næstved Kommune, Vordingborg Kommune, Lolland Kommune, Guldborgsund Kommune,

Hansestadt Lübeck, Stadt Fehmarn, Kreis Ostholstein and the kindergarten Kastanienhof in

Oldenburg) actively contribute to the research work with their experience from the Danish-

German co-operation in the kultKIT projects, and it aims to document challenges and provide

solutions (guidelines) for the successful Danish-German organizational communication.

Cross-linguistic word formation – German, Danish, Icelandic (ongoing project): Based on the

data in the dictionaries of the series Frequency Dictionaries the word formation in the three

Germanic languages German, Icelandic and Danish is studied. First, the fragmentary research

results of the Icelandic and Danish word formation are systematized on the basis of results from

German research. This systematization provides a framework for the analysis and description

of the word formations among the 10,000 common word forms in the three languages. Hereby,

a systematic description of word formation in Icelandic and Danish can be completed. Then, a

comparison of interlingual differences and similarities in the actual utilization of the word

formation potential of three related languages in relation to the frequency is planned. In

addition, word formations of the conceptual area "ethnic group" are recognized on the example

of word formations with the nationality names for Icelandic, German and Danish as components

in the corpora, which are based on the frequency of dictionaries.

Nationale Stereotype und Marketingstrategien in der deutsch-dänischen interkulturellen

Kommunikation - SMiK (www.stereotypenprojekt.eu): 2012-2015, I was PI in an

INTERREG4A-project on Danish-German stereotypes in co-operation with Prof. Dr. Jörg Kilian.

The main aim of the project was to describe the actual stereotypes of Germans in Denmark and

Danes in Germany. The results have been published in around 20 publications and

implemented in teaching materials for Danish and German as a foreign language as well as in

guidelines and a textbook for the Danish-German business communication. Those materials are

freely available on the project homepage, a short version of the textbook Deutsch-dänische

Geschäftskommunikation || Dansk-tysk virksomhedskommunikation is under preparation (in co-

operation with Philipp Baunsgard Koll) and will be published in 2019.

Íslenskur orðasjóður - Icelandic corpora on the Internet: During the work on my postdoc-

project, a productive ongoing co-operation with Uwe Quasthoff at the University of Leipzig was

established. Here, the idea of compiling a large Icelandic corpus with the know-how from the

Wortschatz-project was born. The National and University Library of Iceland provided us with

its collection of all Icelandic internet domains as a text basis for an Icelandic corpus (Internet

archives 2005 and 2010). The corpus, that contains 545 million text words, consists of 6 sub

corpora that are part of the Wortschatz project:

˗ Íslenskur orðasjóður - Isländischer Wortschatz I: A large Icelandic corpus based on all

Icelandic domains from the National and University Library of Iceland in 2005 (ca. 227

million text words).

˗ Íslenskur orðasjóður - Isländischer Wortschatz II: A large Icelandic corpus based on all

Icelandic domains from the National and University Library of Iceland in 2010 (ca 366

million text words).

Those two corpora and further planned corpora (every 5 years) build a solid fundament for

cross-linguistic research as well as for research on the development of the modern Icelandic

language.

Cross-linguistic phraseology in the project Widespread Idioms in Europe and Beyond. A Cross-

linguistic and Cross-cultural Research Project; work on Icelandic and Danish idioms.

Postdoc-project: In my postdoc-project – Deutsch ↔ Isländische Phraseologiedatenbank –, I

explored the possible conceptions for a bilingual electronic dictionary of idioms as the

theoretical-methodic preparatory work for an Icelandic-German Idiom database. A part of this

preliminary work was research on frequency of multiword units in corpora (co-operation with

Uwe Quasthoff). The data from this research has been used to compare frequency in corpora

with native speaker’s knowledge of idioms. This comparison has resulted in a phraseological

optimum (phraseological basic vocabulary) for German as a foreign language.

PhD-project: My doctoral thesis – Das Verstehen idiomatischer Phraseologismen in der

Fremdsprache Deutsch – includes both the critical discussion of existing theories (phraseology,

semantics, contrastive and cognitive linguistics, language acquisition) and a methodic

development for the detection and analysis of empirical linguistic data (questionnaires). In the

thesis, I have used empirical linguistic data from speaker with Icelandic, English or German as

Page 10: Erla Hallsteinsdóttir CVhallsteinsdottir.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/...2018/06/07  · Erla Hallsteinsdóttir – CV 2 Curriculum Vitae Name: Erla Hallsteinsdóttir (born 14.06.1970

a native language to describe what strategies are used to understand – known and unknown –

idioms. One of the important findings of the research is the important role of the native

language in the process of recognizing and understanding less known and unknown idioms in

a foreign language.
