nATCRo® can be used for a widerange of cutting tools. Sometimes it is toohard and brittle for forming. You take outthe silicon and use the ALL® layer, whichis depicted as a nanolayer (Ti, Al, Cr)Ncomposition. To improve the glidingbehavior, the ALL® is supplemented witha top tribological layer CrCN (Fig. 2).

With a (or a few) base coating(s) youcannot do innovative job coating today.Adapted layers are required for thevarious applications in order to meetthe requirements of the different users.Let us show a couple of new, interes-ting examples from Pannon:

nATCRo – ALL® - Universal for

very different applications

The common universal layers (such asTiN, AlTiN, AlCrN etc.) are of course alsooffered if the customer absolutely wantsthem ...

Pannon has been used nATCRo® as abase layer for many years, over 40% ofsales are generated by this coating. It is ananocomposite layer with a continuousnanolayer structure. It contains Ti, Al, Crand Si, i.e. all elements that form thebackbone of today's PVD layers. It can doreplace all universal layers, namedbefore, and offers higher performanceand enables cost-effective job coatingoperations.

P annon has been offering a very flexi-ble and fast service since 2005, inclu-

ding pre- and post-treatments (with dryand wet micro-blasting, drag finishing, brushing) and the latest PLATIT® techno-logies with 3 coating units. In addition toconventional ARCs, hybrid (ARC + sput-ter) processes can be carried out.

The basic drive of the company is theproduction of innovative new layers.

X + ZrCN - Top layer to avoid

built-up edges

ZrN is a recurring well-knowncoating, primarily used for aluminum

processing. Alone, it performs well as abase layer, but it is too expensive toreplace the TiN. Supplemented withcarbon nitride, it is currently experien-cing a renaissance as a top lubricatinglayer that is overcoated on a hard baselayer.

TiXCo® - For hard cutting

and for more

TiXCo® also includes the above 4 basicelements (Ti, Al, Cr, Si), but it is con-structed as a multilayer (CrTiN, CrTiAlN,TiSiN), uses an uppermost, extremelyhard TiSiN top layer, which predestinesthe layer for hard machining.

Impressed by the performance of thelayer in hard machining, the layer wasalso used by customers in other ways.Good results were found at wet graphitecutting even against CVD diamondlayers or at reaming.

The combination of TiB2 and ZrN isinteresting for machining aluminum, whereby the usual 2 layers are doubled.

We were able to achieve particularlyexcellent results when milling (Fig. 4)superalloys (e.g. Nimonic) using thelayer combination nA(T)CRo+Zr(C)Nand BorAC+Zr(C)N [user: Siemens,Budapest].

ta-C - The hard DLC layer

for components and

micro tools

DLC1 and DLC2 layers with hydrogenare based on metals, nitrides, water andcarbon. The carbon (mostly from acety-lene) is deposited as a top layer as alubrication layer [1].

One can speak of hard DLC layers, ofta-C coatings over a 50% proportion ofsp3 crystals. It means a hardness above50 GPa and a roughness smaller than Sa =50 nm. The thin (~ 1um) layer is ideallysuited for coating micro tools and com-ponents that are exposed to constantfrictional loads on the moving compo-nents (Fig. 5).

BorAX - High Entropy Coating:

The next big step in coating

technology?

High entropy alloys are the currenthype in metallurgy. The 5 or more com-ponents form alloys that have signifi-cantly better physical properties thanconventional alloys. E.g. – better strength / weight ratios,– higher bending and tear strength and– higher resistance to corrosion and oxi-

dation.

Why should it be different with coa-tings. The first results of the BorAX =Crn-AlCrTiN/BN/SiN layer prove thisstatement (Fig. 6). The continuous dosing
