Language Arts General Literature Course #1198 Grade Level 11, 12 Prerequisite: English II Dual Credit with NCCC: (1/2) This course will involve extensive reading of significant literature, and involve significant experience in viewing, speaking, and listening. Insight papers will also be written. English Comp I Course #1199 Grade Level 12 Prerequisite: English III Dual Credit with NCCC: (1/2) English Composition 101 consists of instruction and practice in the fundamentals of writing with emphasis on grammatical correctness, acceptable usage, and effective organization of ideas. Exposition is the primary basis for such emphasis. English Comp II Course #1200 Grade Level 12 Prerequisite: English III Dual Credit with NCCC: (1/2) This course will consist of constructive writing with the emphasis on a long investigative paper in MLA style. A book of short articles on moral, political, and social issues is used to acquaint students with contrasting opinions and to encourage them to organize their own ideas on these issues. English 1 Course #1201 Grade Level 9 Prerequisite: None Credit (1) English This course will continue the development of writing, vocabulary, and reading skills. English 2 Course #1202 Grade Level 10 Prerequisite: English I Credit (1) English This course focuses on building critical reading comprehension skills, vocabulary mastery, literature study, and recurrent practice in writing. Grade Level 11 Prerequisite: English 2 Credit (1) English This course continues to develop students’ writing skills, emphasizing clear, logical writing patterns, word choice, and usage, as students write essays and begin to learn the techniques of writing research papers. Students continue to read works of literature, which often form the backing of the writing assignments. Emphasis will be placed on communication skills, both written and oral. Classroom activities will also integrate 21st Century Skills. English 4 Course #01004 Prerequisite: English 3 Credit (1) English This course blends composition and literature into a cohesive whole as students write critical and comparative analyses of selected literature, continuing to develop their language arts skills. Typically, students primarily write multi-paragraph essays, but they may also write one or more major research papers. An emphasis on 21st Century Skills (college and career readiness) with career portfolio development is integrated into this course. Communications Course #01155 Grade Level 10,11,12 Prerequisite: None Credit (1/2) Elective This course focuses on the application of written and oral communication skills through a variety of formal and informal experiences. The courses are performance-based and emphasize effective interpersonal and team-building skills. Communications courses may also involve the study of how interpersonal communications are affected by stereotypes, nonverbal cues, vocabulary, and stylistic choices.

ACT Preparation Course #1219 Grade Level 11 or first semester 12 Prerequisite: College bound Credit: (1/2) Elective This course will be done through the VPL program. Drama/Theatre Productions Course #1235 Grade Level 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1/2) Speech Drama/Theatre Productions is an introduction to theatre basics and stagecraft. This course includes improvisation and character development, writing and directing, and prop creation. There will be hands-on learning in set design, construction, and lighting. This class will perform a fall play. Musical Theatre Course #1312 Grade Level 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Elective This class is a combined class of drama (Mrs. Dalton) and music (Mrs. Craven). Students will work on a project of producing a musical production to be presented to the public. If time allows it might be two productions. Students will learn about set design, acting, choreography, singing, and the history behind some musicals. College Speech Course #1246 Grade Level 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1/2) Elective The student will learn the fundamentals of public speaking. During the class the student will be given the experience of presenting each of the types of speeches, which they might be called upon to deliver during their life. The class can be taken for dual credit through NCCC for three hours of college credit. Reading Strategies Course #1250 Grade Level 9, 10 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) This course is designed for students who are below grade level in their reading skill. Students will receive intensive instruction in reading comprehension and various reading strategies. Some of the course activities are computer based.

Creative Writing Course #1231 Grade Level 11, 12 Prerequisite: English II Credit: (1) Elective Creative Writing is a one-year elective course for students interested in expanding their writing skills. Areas of emphasis will include poetry, short stories, nonfiction, and drama.

Mathematics Algebra I A Course #1516 Grade Level: 9 Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation Credit: (1) Math Materials: Scientific calculator, 2” binder This course is designed to strengthen basic skills with integers and fractions. Students are introduced to the basic concepts of Algebra with patterns and linear functions, proportional reasoning, modeling situations using multiple representations, area, and perimeter. Algebra I B Course #1517 Grade Level: 10 Prerequisite: Algebra 1A Credit: (1) Math Materials: Scientific calculator, 2” binder This course is designed to continue introducing the basic concepts of Algebra 1A including linear equations, geometry and algebra of right triangles, quadratics, and statistical analysis such as mean, median, and mode. Algebra I Course #1503 Grade Level: 9 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Math Materials: Scientific calculator, 2” binder This course is designed to introduce students to skills from working with positive and negative numbers through graphing lines on an XY-Plane. Students will learn how to solve equations and inequalities, learn how to use proportions and probability, properties, and students will learn how to factor polynomials, amongst other related things.

Algebra II Course #1504 Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Algebra I Credit: (1) Math Materials: Scientific calculator, 3” binder, 10 tab dividers, note cards (spiral is best) This course will apply real number properties to algebraic expressions, solve systems of linear equations, solve and graph quadratic equations, and factor and simplify polynomials. Math Strategies Course #1535 Grade Level: 11, 12 Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation Credit: (1) Math This course is required for students who are below grade level in their math skills according to the state math assessment scores. Students will receive intensive instruction in the current Kansas state mathematics standards. Geometry Course #1505 Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Algebra I and Algebra II Credit: (1) Math Materials: Scientific calculator, note cards (spiral is best), 3” binder, 10 tab dividers, protractor, compass, straight edge (ruler) This course covers basic terms relating to geometry: similar and congruence relations involving polygons, right triangle properties, introduction to basic trigonometric functions, area and volume of polygons, along with the use of the compass, protractor, and straight edge. Informal Math Course #02001 Grade Level: 10,11,12 Prerequisite: Counselor or Teacher Recommendation Informal Mathematics emphasizes the teaching of mathematics as problem solving, communication, and reasoning, and highlight the connections among mathematical topics and other disciplines. The teaching of general math, including pre-algebra and pre-geometry topics by applying numbers, and algebraic and geometric concepts and relationships to real world problems. Practical Math Course # 1511 Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Algebra I Credit: (1) Math This course is designed to supply the student with the math skills needed to live in today’s world. Loan repayment, keeping checking and savings accounts, budgeting, taxes and drawing paycheck are a few of the types of skills this course will develop.

Technical Math Course # 02153 Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Algebra 1 Credit: (1) Math Technical Math extends students’ proficiency in mathematics, and often applies these skills to technical and/or real world situations and problems. Topics may include but are not limited to systems of measurements, tolerances, numerical languages, geometry, algebra, algebra, statistics, and using tables, graphs, charts, and other data displays. Technology will be integrated into the class as appropriate.

Advanced Algebra (College Algebra) Course #1518 Grade Level: 11, 12 Prerequisite: Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry Credit: (1) Math Materials: TI83 graphing calculator recommended, graph paper, 3” binder, 8 tab dividers, note cards (spiral is best) This course covers theorems dealing with analytic geometry, solving analytic geometry problems, methods of factoring and applying to problem solving, knowledge of functions, basic circle and triangle trigonometry and concepts of limits and calculus. This can be a concurrent-credit course, which requires enrollment with NCCC. The student will receive 3 hours of College Algebra. Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry Course #1519 Grade Level: 12 Prerequisite: College Algebra Credit: (1) Math Materials: TI83 graphing calculator recommended, graph paper, 3” binder, 8 tab dividers, note cards (spiral is best) This course covers the basic concepts of exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations and inequalities, analytical trigonometric functions and their applications, polar coordinates and vectors, analytical geometry sequences, inductions, and probability.

Natural Science Biology Course #1702 Grade Level 9 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Science This course will cover the basic components of all living things, the cell structures and their roles, genetics, and the relationship between animal organisms and their development from simple to more complex organisms. Dissection and lab experience is included. Environmental Life Science Course #1737 Grade Level 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Science This is an introductory biology class designed for non-majors to fulfill an introductory biology requirement. This is an interdisciplinary course that deals with environmental contributions to human life and the problems that are caused by humans’ use of the natural world.

Course will be laboratory and project based with seminars. Earth/Space Science Course #1714 Grade Level 10 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Science This course covers selected topics in Earth and Space Science and their relationship to physics and chemistry. Lab experiences will be included. Biology II/Anatomy and Physiology Course #1709 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Biology with grade of C or better Credit: (1) Science Topics in this course include organization of the body, body tissues and membranes, and body systems. In depth dissections will be a major part of the class. Physical Science Course #03159 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Science The course involves the study of the structures and states of mater. May include such topics as energy, wave phenomenon, electromagnetism, and physical and chemical interactions. Physics Course #1705 Grade Level 11, 12 Prerequisites: Algebra I and II, Biology, Physical Science. Prior grade of B or better in previous science and math courses. Credit: (1) Science Laboratory course in Physics, the study of matter and its interactions with energy. Topics will include kinematics, waves, heat, sound, light, and electricity. Grades will be based on tests, quizzes, projects, daily work, current events, laboratory, and research projects. The modeling physics approach is used in this class. Students will learn the laws of physics by experimenting, graphing data, and formulating the laws from their mathematical model. Problem solving techniques will be emphasized instead of memorization of facts.

Credit: (1) Science Laboratory course in Chemistry, the study of the structure and properties of matter and its interactions with energy. Grades will be based on tests, quizzes, projects, current events, daily work, laboratory, and research projects.

Physical Education Physical Education/Health Course #1601 Grade Level 9 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Physical Education Cost: Separate gym shoes All 9th grade students are required to take and pass this yearlong course. This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to enjoy a physically healthy lifestyle. The three main areas of focus are: health-related fitness, lifetime physical activity, and health and Wellness concepts and skills. The goal of this class is for students to develop the physical, mental, and social skills necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle. A unit of classroom time will be designated to teaching health related issues. Body Fitness Course #1602 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Elective This course combines weightlifting, stretching and running for total physical development.

US Government/ Economics Course #1409 Grade Level 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1/2) Social Science or (1) Social Science is possible This course covers the American governmental system at the federal, state, and local levels with an emphasis on the issues that have shaped political and economic life today. It is required for graduation. Current Social Issues Course #1406 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Social Science This course will explore “current issues.” TV news broadcasts; newspapers, and news magazines replace a text. It is recommended for students who enjoy working independently and have an interest in current world events. It covers politics, history, and current events and includes lecture, reading, and map work.

Foreign Language Spanish 1 Course #1302 Grade Level 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Foreign Language This course consists of a combination of conversation, grammar and reading Spanish. The focus is on the acquisition of skills in these areas accompanied by an appreciation of the Spanish language and culture. Spanish II Course #1304 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: At least a “C” average is needed in Spanish 1 Credit: (1) Foreign Language This advanced course is a continuation of Spanish I. It will include a strong emphasis on oral, writing, and grammar skills. Juniors and seniors may take this course as a concurrent-credit class. NCCC requires an enrollment of eight students. The course will be a 5-hour credit college course. These skills will be used in attaining knowledge of the Hispanic culture. Students are expected to perform for football and basketball games. Creative Art Course #05154 Grade Level 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Creative Art—Comprehensive courses provide students with the knowledge and opportunity to explore an art form and to create individual works of art. Initial courses cover the language, materials, and processes of a particular art form and the design elements and principles supporting a work of art. As students advance and become more adept, the instruction regarding the creative process becomes more refined, and students are encouraged to develop their own artistic styles. 3-Dimensional Art II Course #1331 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: 3-D Art Credit: (1) This course will build upon the experiences of 3-D Art. Students will have more opportunity for self-directed projects and pursuit of personal goals and interest. Ceramics Course #1324 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: 3-D Art Credit: (1) This course will allow students to develop skills of hand building, wheel throwing, and mold making using clay. There will be continued emphasis on personal expression.

Business/Computer Technology Computer Applications Course #1111 Grade Level 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit (1) Elective This course is an introduction to Microsoft Office Suite and Web 2.0 Computer Applications. Students will be exposed to introductory concepts of spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software and a wide variety of web based computer applications. Computer II Course #1112 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Grade of C or above in Computer I Credit: (1) Elective Computer II is an introductory course for Desktop Publishing (InDesign CS2), Multimedia (Adobe Premiere 6), and Web Page design (FrontPage/Dreamweaver), and graphics (Adobe PhotoShop). Basic Internet and email concepts will be covered. Digital/Video Production Course #1126 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Computer I Credit: (1) Elective Multimedia is designed to teach the concepts that will help the student become successful in the video industry. Video production is a combination of artistic ability, creativity, and technical skill. Students will learn to effectively solve visual problems using the tools at their disposal for pre-production, production, and post-production.

Accounting I Course #1115 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit (1) Elective Students will learn the basic principles of an accounting system for a partnership and a merchandising business. Students will use Microsoft Excel for production of financial statements. Computerized Accounting II Course #1116 Grade Level 11, 12 Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in Accounting I Credit: (1) Elective A self-paced class, this course requires students to be able to do work with limited teacher supervision. Students will use accounting software for this course. Students will learn accounting principles for a corporation. Sample of concepts covered: depreciation, cash flow, and inventory. Journalism Course #11101 Grade Level 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit (1) Elective Journalism emphasizes writing style and technique as well as production values and organization. Students are introduces to the concepts of newsworthiness and press responsibility. Students develop skills in writing and editing stories, headlines and captions; and teaches students the principals of production design, layout, and printing. Photography and photojournalism skills will be included. Web Design Course #10201 Grade Level 9,10,11,12 Prerequisite: None Credit (1) Elective Web Page Design teaches students how to design web sites by introducing them to and refining their knowledge of site planning, page layout, graphic design and the use of markup languages to develop and maintain a web page. A major project of this class will be to maintain the high school and district web site pages. The course may also include security and privacy issues, copyright infringement, trademarks, and other legal issues relating to the use of the Internet. Advanced topics may include the use of forms and scripts for database access, transfer methods, and networking fundamentals. Yearbook Course #1224 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Instructor Consent Only Credit (1) Elective

Adobe Creative Suite is used for publishing the yearbook. Primary programs from that group of graphic design tools are InDesign, Illustrator, and PhotoShop. Must be willing to learn photography skills with digital still and movie cameras. Extended teaching of programs is taught by Jostens representatives from Topeka. This course covers publishing skills, techniques, and requires writing ability and a high degree of responsibility. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors should enroll. Computer-Aided Graphics Course #1132 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Computer II would be helpful, and permission of instructor Credit: (1) Elective This course gives students an overview of the graphic arts industry for print. This course also provides a comprehensive understanding of digital image-editing software and page building. Emphasis is on advanced software functionality such as color correction and color management needs as well as commercial imaging practices in a prepress environment. Projects focus on creating documents that follow industry standards and best practice file creation for print production. Software used will be Adobe Creative Suite CS2. Class size is limited.

IHT (In House Training) Course #1121 Grade Level 12 Prerequisite: Approval of Instructor Credit (1) Elective Students will use the computer skills learned in Computer I & II to complete projects for the principal’s office, faculty, and community businesses. Projects completed in the past include databases, PowerPoint presentations, and game programs. This course is required for a student to be a “Completer” in the VE2 Program.

Agriculture Education Introduction to Agriculture Course #1906 Grade Level 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: (1) Elective This course is meant to serve as a foundation to all other agricultural education courses and will allow exploration of the opportunities available to students in agriculture. Plant and Soil Science Course #1908 Grade Level 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Successful completion of Introduction to Agriculture Credit: (1) Elective This course is designed for students who seek more knowledge of plants and soils and the technology that is incorporated with them today. This class will be a study of the preparations before planting, to planting, care, and harvesting. Soils topics include soil materials and formation, land classification and use, soil fertility and nutrients, plus conservation practices and erosion. Basic plant topics include plant structures, growth processes, and reproduction and genetics. Prototyping and Problem Solving Course #1928 Grade 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Elective Prototyping and Problem Solving is a course in which students learn to solve problems using a formal approach. After familiarization with formal problem solving, students are asked to demonstrate its use in various scenarios. The class concentrates on technological problem solving and the creation of technological systems as solutions to problems. Students are not only asked to solve problems in theory or on paper but are asked to construct prototypes of their solutions for testing and evaluation. Career Exploration Course # 22153 Grade Level 9,10,11,12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1/2) Elective This course helps students enter the workforce through career exploration, job search and application, and the development of positive work attitudes and work-related skills. These courses typically cover such topics as career planning and selection, money management, communication skills, interpersonal business relationships and behaviors, and personal responsibility. Work Study Course #1223 Grade Level 12 Prerequisite: Career Development This program places a student on a job related to their career objective. Students must work an average of 15 hours per week. Students must meet with the CCVEP coordinator and sign a statement of vocational objective and receive approval before enrolling in this class. Students must find their own jobs and should have one when school starts. Jobs must be approved by coordinator. Students should also have their own vehicle for transportation.

Leadership Course #22101 Grade Level 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Credit: (1) Elective This course is designed to strengthen students’ personal and group leadership skills. Students will be active participants in the design, creation and implementation of the High School Renaissance Program. Students will be involved in a variety of school and community service projects. Topics in the classroom may also cover public speaking, effective communication, human relations, organization and management and group dynamics.

Community Service Service Learning will serve as an innovative instructional technique that will actively involve students in an area of study through service projects within their community. Students will gain knowledge and a sense of accomplishment through participation in the design and implementation of service projects, reflecting on their experiences and sharing those experiences with others. Seniors will be allowed to leave campus independently on an approval basis only. All service projects must receive the approval of the high school counselor, high school principal and parent prior to the service being performed. 100 hours, a reflection, and presentation are required for 1 credit. Hours may be carried over from one year to the next.

Credit Recovery Courses High school courses are offered via Edgenuity, as online courses, through the Second Chance Learning Center. These courses have been approved for credit from Erie High School. Information regarding the courses available, course content, and course fees is available through the high school counselor. Enrollment is Edgenuity Courses must have prior approval by the high school counselor and high school principal. Upon successful completion of a course, the student will receive credit based on the CUSD #101 Grading Scale.

Youth Pals Course Description This course provides an opportunity for highly qualified seniors to volunteer with elementary students in the school setting. Qualifications include a 3.0 GPA, a good citizenship and attendance record, and a commitment to spend a class period each day working directly with elementary school students. Activities may include working one-on-one or in a small group, tutoring in Reading or Math, and helping with homework or special assignments. This course is recommended for students planning to pursue a career in the education field. Rationale The goals of the Youth Pals Program support the mission statement of CUSD #101. Youth Friends Corps provides an avenue for high school seniors to be good role models for younger students. By being good role models, volunteers demonstrate responsible citizenship, life skills, and critical thinking skills. Youth Pals volunteers must agree to abide by the Standards of Conduct the organization requires.

Courses Offered Through PBL Only Business Management Business Management students will develop an understanding of current business problems and issues. Analytical skills are developed through the use of the case study approach for solving business problems and making effective business decisions. This course can be taken for 1 or ½ credit. Christian Studies This course is designed as a ‘special topics’ course that is tailored to a project of the student’s choosing from various themes of the Old and New Testaments. Students will conduct analysis of special topics with the approval of the advisor and parent. Pharmacy Technician This course prepares students for the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. The course consists of approximately 150 hours and contains an on-line component.

Visual Arts In this course, students will produce works of art that demonstrate control of a variety of media, techniques and processes in each of the following in both traditional media and emerging technology including both a 2-D and a 3-D art project. A written analysis is also required. (See art instructor for details) Early Civilizations The student will research early civilizations between 4000-1000 BCE. This era introduces students to one of the most enduring themes in history: the agrarian civilizations and pastoral peoples of the great grasslands. They will also learn about the deep encounter and exchange among societies. In this era many of the world’s most fundamental inventions, discoveries, institutions, and techniques appeared. (See advisor for details) Career Internship (seniors only) This learning opportunity will enable students and their parents to choose from programs that integrate challenging high school studies and work-based learning and are planned by educators, employers and students.
