Our first Tree Walk was held in BesantNagar. Led by Dr. Narayanaswamy,a retired professor of Botany, a mot-ley group of 30 tree enthusiasts went

along observing and learning about treesby the roadside.

While learning about the trees, walkerslearnt about issues that trees in urban ar-eas face abuse, nailing, and suffocationby indiscriminate paving. People dont re-alise the long-term effects of a tree that iscut and not replaced. In one act of destruc-

tion, a vital eco-system that provided ahaven for many birds, squirrels and insectsis removed. So, the damage goes on until

worrying stories about global warming (formany individuals, this too seems to haveno effect) make you think youd better dosomething. There are several things we cando to create a greener Chennai.

Being aware of the correct procedurefor planting and caring for a sapling is veryimportant. Also, choose species that helpregenerate local biodiversity.

Begin to notice the trees around you the beautiful shapes, colours, flowers andfruits. Also notice the insensitive pruning, stakes that need removal, tree guards thatcan harm, and trees dying from wounds, drought and pollution and do everything

you can for them. Become a tree guardian. Begin by

adopting one tree in your own street, then

wash its leaves, give it a drink, and seeneeds any special care. Then take onother and another. Check up on themery once in a while to see how thedoing.

Nizhal invites corporate organisationbe part of our movement for sensgreening. One could take part in tree veys, awareness campaigns, and mostportantly, to dispel the myth greening is only about planting saplinTo be a responsible tree planter is mimportant, and this means taking carmonitor the growth of the saplings plan

(it should never be about the numbesaplings planted), and to help regenebiodiversity of flora and fauna with a cful choice of species and a focus on bring back indigenous species that are vanishing.

Often, in the course of my work, Imember the concluding line from Sundara Ramasamis poem, Vriksha nidhargal Manithargal marangal pol hum kalaam varum (There will comtime when men will live like trees!). Nihopes so too.

The 30-odd elders of Aruwee, aday care home for destitute el-ders and deprived children, arebreathing a sigh of relief. For

the Rs 5 lakh donated by the CSRwing of Alcatel- Lucent would surely

help them shift to a much largerplace than the asbestos toppedsmall rented room on a terrace, in

which they are staying with muchdifficulty now.

The WELCOM (welfare commit-tee), is a voluntary corporate socialresponsibility group started within

Alcatel Lucent, Chennai, whichserves many orphans, disabled chil-dren and destitute elders joininghands with various NGOs. Thegroup has been working closely withNGOs Good life Centre, Aruwe, An-

bu Karangal and Gnana Deepam.Recently the WELCOM groupbagged the CSR Champions Award2008 and a cash award of US $10,000 by competing with the 130centres of Alcatel Lucent spreadacross the world.

B.V.S. Krishnamoorthy, Director(R&D) Alcatel- Lucent, who gave

away the cheque to Aspy Joyson, founder trustee of Aruwe, said thatthe WELCOM group is working with

Aruwe for the past eight years andthey found them doing true service. The sustained effort of the volun-teers has helped them win theaward. There are 10 core membersin the group supported by 350volunteers. Supported by the HRand communications wing of thefirm, the volunteers are involved inlong-term social responsibility ac-tivities, Krishnamoorthy said.

Apart from the fund providethe corporate, the Pay Roll Gi(PRG) Scheme of the WELCgroup is also a constant sourcfinance from the employees

    A helping hand

B.V.S. Krishnamoorthy, Direct(R&D) Alcatel- Lucent (third frleft) presents the cheque toAspy Joyson (third from rightfounder trustee of Aruwe.

Aruwe, a social welfare organisation, founded in 1993 is run by Aspy Joy-

son and Rachel Victor, both alumni ofSocial Work Department of Stella MarisCollege. Inspired by the field work theydid among the fishermen communityin Kanyakumari and at Otteri Slum

with YWCA during their college days, they set out to help destitute elders.

Since Aspy was from Aynavaram, shedecided to help the elders in the slumsnear her house.

Aruwe, started as a day care homefor elders now also works for the reha-bilitation of children in slums. Aspyand Rachel visited the slum and invitedthe elders to their one room office lo-

cated on the terrace of Apsys maternalhouse. Now the office has turned into ahome for more than 30 destitute eldersout of them 15 reside there, while therest go home after dinner and returnsin the morning.

We never thought that it will turninto a complete destitute home. Nowthe problem we face is space con-straint. It is difficult to accommodateso many people in one room. And alsothe elders find it difficult to climb thestairs. We are looking for sponsors whocan provide us with a piece of land. Themoney we got from Alactel Lucent willbe used for the building, says Aspy,

who has a team of seven, to look afterthe elders plus the 80 children of theslums who they provide with dinner

and supplementary education.Children in slums also have dreams.

One such boy who fulfilled his dream isnow placed in a famous IT company inChennai. He lost his father at a youngage and his mother is mentally retard-ed. He asked us for help and we foundsponsors for him. After finishing hisengineering degree from Anna Univer-sity, he was placed in a software firm. Now he is in U.K.

Last academic dear, one of our stu-dents got more than 400 marks in theSSLC examination, says Aspy addingthat it is difficult to make people un-derstand the importance of education. But there are really bright students

whose lives are spoilt by their very ownparents. One thing I ask educated peo-

ple is not to give alms to kids who begon roads especially near traffic signals.Because the more money you give, infuture there will be more on thestreets.

Aruwes next project is to find spon-sors for the 38 children of Tirunelvelidistrict. The children need Rs. 600each per year for their studies. We haveto find sponsors for them. Though weare struggling here to run this home,

we cannot ignore these children whohave come to us for help. God willshow us some way, says Aspy whilesorting out the application of the chil-dren class wise.

    AU.S.-based language mon-

itoring group crowned Web2.0 as the one millionth

word or phrase in the En-glish language on Wednesday, al-though other linguists slammed itas nonsense and a stunt.

The Global Language Monitor, which uses a math formula to

track the frequency of words andphrases in print and electronicmedia, said Web 2.0 appeared

over 25,000 times in searches andwas widely accepted, making itthe legitimate, one millionth wor-d.It said Web 2.0 started out as atechnical term meaning the next

generation of World Wide Webproducts and services but hadcrossed into far wider circulationin the last six months.

There are no set rules for such acount as there is no certified arbi-ter of what constitutes a legiti-mate English word andclassifying the language is com-

plicated by the number of com-pound words, verbs and obsoleteterms.

I think its pure fraud ... Its

not bad science. Its nonsense,Geoffrey Nunberg, a linguisticsprofessor at the University of Cal-ifornia at Berkeley, told reporters.

Paul JJ Payack, president of the

Global Language Monitor, brushed off the criticism, sayinghis method was technicallysound.

If you want to count the starsin the sky, you have to define

what a star is first and then count. Our criteria is quite plain and if

you follow those criteria you cancount words. Most academics say

what we are doing is very valua-ble, said Payack.

He has calculated that about14.7 new English words or phras-es are generated daily and saidthe five words leading up to the

millionth highlighted how En-glish was changing along withcurrent social trends.

This list included Jai Ho! anIndian exclamation signifying

victory or accomplishment, slumdog, a term that becpopular with the Oscar-winmovie Slumdog Millionaire.

The list also included ccomputing, meaning servdelivered via the cloud or Innet, carbon neutral, a wiused term in the climate chadebate, and N00b, a derogaterm from the gaming comnity for a newcomer.

Some 400 years after the dof the Bard, the words and phes were coined far from StratfUpon-Avon, emerging ins

from Silicon Valley, India, Chand Poland, as well as AustrCanada, the U.S. and the Usaid Texas-based Payack.

    Re

    Web 2.0crownedone millionthEnglish word

Other linguists, however, denounced the listas pure publicity and unscientific, saying it

was impossible to count English words inuse or to agree on how many times a wordmust be used before it is officially accepted

Big bosses giving SantoshTrophy a miss?National football coach Bob Houghton has decidedto give the Santosh Trophy a miss. The British coachfor the Indian national team will instead attend aconditioning camp for the national under-16 andunder-19 boys in Goa.With a settled pool of players for national duty,Houghton, it is believed, is not too keen on addingup the numbers unless an injury forces him to do so.All-India Football Federation (AIFF) acting presidentand Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel andother top officials have also not confirmed theirpresence for the final slated this Sunday.Meanwhile, the national preparatory camp for theNehru Cup may now be held in Dubai in place of

Delhi. AIFF general secretary Alberto Colaco said itwas not possible to hold the camp in Delhi as thepitch at the Ambedkar Stadium had to be renovatedfor the Nehru Cup in August.

ready to run that extra mile towin this trophy. We have playedwell and are high on confidenceand need to capitalise on that. Its a god mix of youth and expe-

rience as we have seven I-Leagueplayers and also some goodplayers from the local League.

The I-League cronies of Kulu, keeper V.P. Satish and MohunBagan defenders Ravanan andMohanraj have looked com-pletely at ease and have been in-strumental in guiding their teamto the last-four stage. Not to beoutdone, the local League strik-ers P.C. Riju and Muthu, too, have forged a deadly combina-tion and have troubled very de-fender with their pace and knackof finding the net. Its an op-portunity for the local lads toshow their mettle. Already theI-League clubs are queuing up to

sign them. That itself speaks forour performance, coach P. Thu-lasi says. Goa is a tough sidewith a host of Indian interna-tionals but we are not concernedabout them. We just need toplay to our potential.

Goa, though, are a better ped-igreed side and will no doubtfancy their chances. We are get-ting better with each passingday. Its the determination of theboys to win and when everybodyis focussed the task gets easier. But its also important to main-tain our concentration, coachMariano Dias says. Weveplayed with a certain rhythmand, more importantly, we havescored heavily too. Goa playedwell throughout tournament

and have showed theirclass in the quarter-fi-nals group stage, a 5-0hammering of Maha-rashtra in their last

game standing outas one of the mostdominant performances evenin this high-scoring tourna-ment so far.

In Marcus Mascarenhas(the hattrick man from theMaharashtra mauling) theyhave a certain starter upfrontand coach Dias is spoiled for op-tions with regard to his partner. Both Dempos Joaquim Abranch-es and Freddy Marcarenhas are ahandful and no team will dare totake them lightly.

The experienced pairing of na-tional team regular MaheshGawli and Covan Lawrence formthe central defensive pair with

skipper Felix DSouza guardingthe goal. A clean sheet can wellbe expected from the trio andthe likes of Muthu and Riju willhave to labour extra hard tosnoop behind this formidablefortress.

India coach Bob Houghtonsfavourite Climax Lawrence andBevan DMello, who had helpedhimself to a brace against Mah-arashtra, will shepherd the mid-field with Wilton Gomes andNicholas Rodrigues adding theirweight behind the strikers.

An intriguing contest is in theoffing but the city stars can foronce hope their fans are paro-chial and fill the near-empty sta-dium and shout them to greaterglory.

    Jackos strange demand forchild choir

Michael Jackson ismaking strangerequests for hiscomeback concertsstarting Saturday hewants a childrenschoir that will haveexactly equalnumbers of black, white, mixed-raceand Asian singers.

According tomirror.co.uk, Jacksonalso wants every childto know signlanguage and they

are supposed to be inthe age group of 5 to13 years. The weirdrequest was sent to casting agents on behalf ofpromoters AEG Live, who are organising his 50concerts at O2 Arena here.

Normally when we cast choirs for acts, its quitea laborious task. But in this case, its proving a nearimpossibility. Jacko is a perfectionist and wants itexactly right and that means every child being ableto do sign language. AEG are desperate to keepJacko happy and so are pulling out all the stops tomake it happen. But its a race against time, aninsider said.

Jackson also wants that the six marching snaredrummers should be clean shaved. He insteadwants them to be young adults, clean-cut and ofmixed ethnicity.

Finally, Selvaraghavan has re-vealed that his much-antici-pated magnum opus, Aayirathil Oruvan, starring

Karthi, Reema Sen, Andrea Jere-miah and Parthipan, would hit thescreens soon hopefully by August

first week.Addressing a press meet on

Wednesday in the city he said:This is my dream venture and Idont believe in beating aroundthe bush, as I had already directedmovies based on existing themes. So, I wanted to try something dif-ferent in Kollywood. This is a fanta-sy-cum-adventure film, in whichcomputer graphics has been widelyused. Im confident that all my de-dication and hard work will makethis movie set the box office onfire.

The audio of the movie, set toscore by G.V.Prakash Kumar, willbe released at a glittering eventlater this week.

Selva dismissed the reports of riftbetween him and music directorYuvan Shankar Raja. Yuvan wasbusy with other projects, so I decid-ed to rope in G.V.Prakash Kumar. Itdoesnt mean that we both are atloggerheads. We have given someexcellent results in the past, andthis time Yuvans absence wontmake any difference, said the di-

rector, who has also penned thelyrics for the movie.

For over 2 years, the film hasbeen extensively shot across manycities, including, Chennai, Hydera-bad, Mumbai, Jaisalmer and NewYork. Most part of the movie hasbeen picturised inside dense rain-forests, involving more than 2,000artistes.

Actor Karthi, who shot to famepost-Paruthiveeran, is back after along hiatus, is harping on the yet-to-be released Kollywood potboil-er. Even though the film took 2years to be completed, I think itsworth the wait. I was always readyfor hard work and dont lamentover working on a single project

for such a long time, he added. Healso hailed cinematographer Ram-ji, as the pillar of the film and com-mended his camera-handling skills. The young hero also ruled out thathe has not got any immediate plansto work together with his brotherSuriya.

Music director G.V.Prakash Ku-mar said he had confidence in Sel-

varaghavan and the music hascome out well. I hope this film willbe a turning point in my career. There are around 10 songs of dif-ferent genres and for the first timein modern Tamil film industry, Ihave used many ancient musical in-struments. Veteran singerP.B.Sreenivas has also crooned asong.

Glam doll Andrea, who plays therole of an archaeologist, said it wasa good experience for her. I learnta lot on the sets and was awestruckby the tireless contributions madeby the junior artistes. Its a reallychallenging role for me and Imlucky to be part of such a megaproject.
