Requirement: Equipment-Specific Lockout ProceduresOSHA CFR 1910.147 The Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout)

Synopsis: Machine-specific lockout / tagout procedures are required for equipment that has more than one energy source, as well as for equipment that has a single energy source in most conditions.

The Joint Commission indexes OSHA 1910.147 multiple times in its Environment of Care Crosswalk. Lockout/Tagout is referenced in the Safety and Security chapter [Elements of Performance for EC.02.01.01], Medical Equipment chapter [EP for EC.02.04.03], Utilities chapter [EP for EC.02.05.05] and Roles and Responsibilities chapter [EP for EC.03.01.01].

Requirement: Confined Space ProceduresOSHA CFR 1910.146 Permit-Required Confined Spaces

Synopsis: Employers must evaluate the workplace to identify permit-required confined spaces. Procedures must then be developed and implemented to cover acceptable entry conditions for the designated spaces (isolating, purging, ventilating, etc.) and the proper use of barriers. Employers must provide a full range of equipment (testing, ventilating, PPE, etc.), designate and train active role participants, and more.
