HISTORY EARLY 2000- EPrints series began

NOVEMBER 2000- EPrints 1.0 was released with OAI 0.2 support.

24TH JANUARY2007- eprints version 3 was officially released and was described by its developers as a major leap forward in functionality, giving more control and flexibility to repository managers, depositories, researchers and technical administrators.

APRIL 2008- current version of eprints is 3.0.5 was released.

Page 3: Eprints digital library software.final

Eprints has been developed at the

university of Southampton School of

electronics and computer science.

Page 4: Eprints digital library software.final

When first version of Eprints was released it

became the first and one of the most widely used

free open access, institutional repository software

for archiving preprints and post of faculty

members.

EPRINTS

-is a significant milestone towards ideal

repository software.

-Is a free and open source software for building

open access repositories that are compliant with

the open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata

Harvesting.

Page 5: Eprints digital library software.final

-primarily used by many organizations for building

institutional repositories.

-repository software has been developed to address

the growing demands on repositories to

accommodate a wider variety objects and metadata,

to integrate with a wider range of services and

applications and to support higher deposit rates to

serve the needs of the whole institution.

DOCUMENT TYPES THAT CAN BE ADDED

IN THE SOFTWARE

-eprints supports to add the following document types in

the repository:

ARTICLE- an article in a journal, magazine, newspaper.

BOOK SECTION- a chapter or section in a book.

CONFERENCE OR WORKSHOP ITEM- a paper, poster, speech

, lecture, or presentation given at a conference, workshop

or other event.

BOOK- conference volume

Page 10: Eprints digital library software.final

MONOGRAPH- this may be a technical report

,project report, documentation, manual, working

paper or discussion paper.

PATENT- a published patents

Page 11: Eprints digital library software.final

THESIS- or dissertation

ARTEFACT- an artist’s artefact or work product.

SHOW/EXHIBITION- site specific performance-based deposit

COMPOSITION- a musical composition

Page 12: Eprints digital library software.final

PERFORMANCE- performance of a musical event

IMAGE- a digital photograph or visual image

VIDEO- digital video

AUDIO- sound recording

DATASET- a bounded collection of quantitative

data ex. Spreadsheet

EXPERIMENT- experimental data with

intermediate analyses and summary results.

TEACHING RESOURCE- lecture notes, exercises,

exam papers or course syllabuses

OTHER- something with in the scope of the

repository, but not covered by the other

categories.

The software have the capability to define the

domain/scope of digital Library for whom it is intended

for, and Eprints is basically intended for creating

preprints/post print archives, but the current version also

support adding other type of documents such as

audio/video.

All text formats are by default supported by the software,

but software also supports to upload JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP,

TIFF, file formats, Adobe postscript, Adobe PDF, HTML file

format, MP3, AVI, MPEG file formats.

Page 14: Eprints digital library software.final

Software checks for duplicate entries while uploading the

digital documents on the basis of “Title”

Supports to upload digital objects from existing URL as well.

Has a facility to acquire material from network through

authorized Eprints user. Eprints user can upload documents

through his/her login area from anywhere on Internet.

Supports to import metadata from XML/PubMED and allow end

user to separately upload full texts. It is easy to import

metadata in Eprints if available in XML or eprints supported

format.

Page 15: Eprints digital library software.final

System supports to import bulk metadata/contents.

Metadata is separately imported in Eprints.

System supports to export content/metadata. While

exporting metadata software supports to export individual

item in the repository with following file formats:

o ASCII Citation

o BibTex

o Dublin Core

o DIDL

o EP3 XML

o EP3 XML with Files Embedded

Page 16: Eprints digital library software.final

o EndNote

o HTML Citation

o METS

o MODS

o Open URL Content Object

o Open URL Dissertation

o Open URL Journal

o Refer

o Reference Manager

o Simple Metadata

Eprints create a unique numeric ID for each document

that gets added into the repository.

Software has weed out policy and it allows to put an

embargo data for each item that gets added into the

repository as well it has “retire document” option for

every item that is added into the repository.

System supports to delete items from the repository , but

does not support any cross linking of objects from one

collection to other.

COMPARISON OF EPRINTS AND DSPACE

EPRINTS DSPACE

Installation -easy to set up

-It is possible to chose

between a source- or

binary-installation.

-If any installation

problems are arising a

comprehensive support

is ensured.

-requires a little more

effort

-But in fact DSpace is

easy to run and

maintain for any

experienced systems

engineer.

-There is no support

service for the DSpace

installation. But there is

a detailed system

documentation

Page 19: Eprints digital library software.final

Programming

languagePerl Java

Operation

system

Both environment variants

had been tested: Solaris and

Linux.

Furthermore it is also

possible to install Eprints2

on any computer that is

running with GNU/Linux or

UNIX operating system.

DSpace had been tested on

Linux Suse 7.3.

In general DSpace can run

on Solaris, Linux and

Windows systems.

Page 20: Eprints digital library software.final

Functions -Eprints is free software

which creates online

archives.

-It is possible to store

documents in any common

format that the archive

administrator defined to be

accepted.

-DSpace can be used for self

archiving by institutions and

faculties.

-It provides long-term

physical storage and

management of digital items

in a repository.

Reusage -Eprints is widespread all over

the world. In August 2003

there are 72 worldwide

archives running Eprints

software officially listed.

-It is not reported how many

archives are running DSpace

software. One example of an

European repository that

implemented DSpace is

"Erasmus University:

Research Online".

Page 21: Eprints digital library software.final

Technology -Eprints uses

traditional

technologies and runs

on pure Open Source

systems: mySQL is the

world's most popular

open source database,

recognized for its

speed and reliability

and Apache has been

the most popular web

server on the Internet

since April of 1996.

-Eprints is programmed

by using the script

language "Perl", that is

low level but powerful.

-DSpace operates with

new technologies such

as the Postgres

database, that is more

advanced than mySQL

and Tomcat for jsp/java

web application, that

has higher

performance than

eprints.

-Dspace supports and

includes also handle

server, which ensures

that each document

has unique and

persistent URL.

Page 22: Eprints digital library software.final

Interoperability -Eprints is freely

distributable and

subject to the GNU

General Public License.

This means that its

source code is open

and freely modifiable

by any programmer

who wishes to modify

it (on condition that

modifications are all

free and open).

-The DSpace system is

freely available as

open-source software.

This allows to make

any necessary changes

to the downloaded

copy. The system was

designed to make

adaptations for

individual

organisations as easy

as possible.

Page 23: Eprints digital library software.final

search -Eprints allows to scan

each of the metadata

field types in the

database by simple or

advanced search. Any

metadata field can be

searched with fine

granularity by SQL

querying the database.

-DSpace offers two

levels of text search:

simple and advanced

search. It's submission

process also allows to

use a qualified version

of the Dublin Core

metadata schema for

the description of each

item. These

descriptions are stored

in a relational

database, which is

used by the search

engine to retrieve

items.
