prayer for light Presider Let us pray. O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the

earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

All Amen.The candles at the Altar and other candles in the space are now lighted. (Congregational candles will be lit later in the service.)

Presider How wonderful are the works of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When they turned away and rebelled, your love remained steadfast. From them you raised up Jesus our Savior, born of Mary, to be the light upon our way and the living bread, in whom all our hungers are satisfied. And so, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of Christ.

On the night before he died for us, our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

We now celebrate, O God, the memorial of Christ our Savior. By means of this holy bread and cup, we show forth the sacrifice of Christ’s death, and proclaim the resurrection, until Christ comes in glory. Gather us by this Holy Communion into one body in the Risen One, and make us a living sacrifice of praise.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever.

passing the gift of light While the candles of the congregation are lit, the Presider says the following:

From generation to generation, an endless list of saints, missionaries, and martyrs have carried the Light into the world and labored to lay the foundation stones for the Church of our day.

From Jesus to the Twelve and Mary Magdalene and the other Mary at the tomb to Paul and the Apostles and the earliest followers of the Way through the laying on of hands to our immediate forbearers, Samuel Seabury, the first Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States, Thomas Fielding Scott, the first Bishop of the Diocese of Olympia, and the many bishops, priests, deacons and laity who have worshiped and served in this Diocese and in this community of faith that bears the name of Mark the Evangelist, the Light of the Gospel has been received, has been passed on and has come to us this day.

You hold a candle, a candle which represents the Light of Christ that has been passed to you. You and I, as children of God and members of the Body of Christ, are called to share the Light and to spread the love of Christ in all the world.

As a symbol of living into our Baptismal vocation, as bearers of the Light, join in the procession carrying our flaming candles to the Burning of the Greens and show that God’s gift of radiant love and the light of Christ shines through us like the Star into the darkness of the world.
