Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Happy New Year!
It is my hope that 2014 starts well for you. As many
know, the New Year is a time when people celebrate by
creating resolutions that they hope to live by during the
upcoming year.
Every year it seems that there are resolutions that come
up, whether it is making a resolution to spend more time
with family and friends, to work on eating healthier and
becoming more fit, to get more organized or to quit smoking. But with everyone making
resolutions, some struggle to understand why it takes a new year to do these things and
others are left quitting shortly after starting.
Strengthening or growing in faith is not one of the things that you see on the most popular
resolutions each year. That is why, as we enter into 2014, I wanted to share with you how
Hope can become a part of your new year resolution. For some of you, it may be that you are
hoping to attend church more often. Others of you may see the new year as an opportunity to
get involved in one of the many activities that we have here at Hope. It could be joining one of
the committees here, coming to more family events as they are hosted, coming to check out
what Bible study has to offer, signing up to help with one of our many community outreach
activities or even stopping in for an adult forum one Sunday after the early service.
However, while there are many opportunities within the church building, don’t forget to think
about how you can help us serve out in the community.
Over the next few weeks, we encourage you to think about how Hope can help change your
future in 2014 and maybe this will be one resolution that sticks!
Blessings to you as we start the adventures of new year together.

Confirmation Update
Young Adult Ski Retreat
Don’t miss our annual Young Adult
ski retreat to Grand Targhee Resort
in Alta, WY. This trip is for all
current college students and any
young adults who are no longer in
high school. We will depart from
Hope Lutheran on Friday, January
17 and head to a rental home near
the ski resort. On Saturday we will
ski all day. On Sunday we will drive
over the pass and go into Jackson
Hole for Church and a
snowshoeing adventure in the
Grand Tetons. The cost of this trip
is greatly reduced to make it
affordable for college students, and
is $75 for people who have their
own equipment and $100 for those
who need rentals. The fee covers
transportation if traveling with the
group, meals beginning with
Breakfast on Saturday and ending
with Breakfast on Monday, lift
ticket, snow shoe rental (though if
you own snow shoes please bring
them!), and admission to Grand
Tetons. We will return on Monday,
January 20, which is Martin Luther
King Jr. Day.
Space is VERY limited, and on a
first come first served basis. The
only way to sign up is to give your
$75 to Paul Goodman.
Coming in January: Confirmation will begin again on
Sunday, January 5 at 5:30 and this
spring almost every gathering will be
from 5:30-7. We will begin with a
review night, followed by learning
about the Apostle’s Creed and the Ten
Commandments. This spring we will
also have several guest speakers,
including Rabbi Ed Stauffman, who
will teach us about Judaism, Dr. Rahul
Amin, who will teach us about Islam
and more! We will also have two fun
nights, including a trip to Bozeman
Hot Springs, and another to the Spire
climbing center. It should be a
GREAT spring! The schedule for
January is as follows
January 5: Review Game Show with
prizes.
January 12: Overview of The Apostle’s
Creed
January 19: NO CLASS: MLK
WEEKEND
January 26: Does God Still Create
Things Today?
February 2: How Can God be Three
in One?
February 9: Family Night: Family
Creeds
February 16: NO

WEEKEND
February 23: Special Guest Speaker:
Purchase gift cards with a percentage being
given to our congregation!
You are now able to purchase gift cards from hundreds of
businesses like Lowes, Safeway, Exxon, Olive Garden, and more. Hope Lutheran will
automatically receive a percentage from each card purchased ranging from 3-18%. You still
give the full face value of the card to spend locally or give as gift card. This is an excellent
way to not spend an extra dollar but increase revenue for Hope Lutheran. Checkout:

Join a Choir & Sing Your Way to Happiness
Study found singing in a chorus boosted mental well-being,
sense of meaningfulness
FRIDAY, Dec. 6, 2013 (Health Day News) -- Singing in a choir might be good for your mental health, a new study suggests.
British researchers conducted an online survey of nearly 400 people who either sang
in a choir, sang alone or belonged to a sports team. All three activities were associated with greater levels of mental well-being, but the levels were higher
among those who sang in a choir than those who sang alone.
The poll also revealed that choral singers regarded their choirs as more meaningful
social groups compared to how athletes viewed their sports teams.
The study, presented Thursday at a meeting of the British Psychological Society in
York, England, did not actually show a cause-and-effect link between singing in a choir and being happy, however. "Research has already suggested that joining a
choir could be a cost-effective way to improve people's well-being," study author Nick Stewart, of Oxford Brookes University, said in a society news release. "Yet we
know surprisingly little about how the well-being effects of choral singing are brought about."
"These findings suggest that the experience of using your voice to make music may be enhanced when you feel part of a cohesive social group," he said. "Further
research could look at how moving and breathing [in concert] with others might be responsible for creating a unique well-being effect."
Chancel Choir meets Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 P.M.
