MISSIONThe Eastern Orthopaedic Association (EOA) was establishedin 1970 under the leadership of Howard H. Steel, MD and 12prominent orthopaedic surgeons. Its purpose is to promote,encourage, foster and advance the highest quality and mostcost effective practice of orthopaedic surgery and mattersrelated thereto by providing an educational format for the freediscussion and teaching of Orthopaedic methods andprinciples among Orthopaedic Surgeons, both member andnon-member; and to establish a forum for practicingOrthopaedic Surgeons to update their knowledge andawareness of new techniques, treatment methods, anddevices available for patient care, teaching, and research byusing the most appropriate educational methods.

TARGET AUDIENCEThe 48th Annual Meeting of the Eastern OrthopaedicAssociation has been developed primarily for orthopaedic andtrauma surgeons.

The 48th Annual Meeting of the Eastern OrthopaedicAssociation (EOA) is right around the corner—October18-21, 2017 at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel. The hotel islocated on South Beach, one of Miami’s most excitingneighborhoods, and boasts ocean-front rooms andspacious meeting areas.

The Scientific Program, headed by Richard Wilk, MD, is filled with an arrayof topics presented in podium presentations, symposia, and interactivesmall-group discussions, and will take place in the mornings. Afternoonsare free for relaxation, social events, or optional educational activities. TheEOA’s meetings are known to foster audience participation in a friendlyenvironment. My Presidential Guest Speaker will be J. Richard Bowen, MD,from Nemours/duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE. The HowardSteel Lecture will be given by Mr. Dick Yuengling of Pottsville, PA, who willspeak about his family brewery, the oldest in the United States.

Social events will be focused on the South Beach area. A WelcomeReception with food and drink will be held at the Hotel beachfront lawn onThursday night. This event is a great kick-off start for our meeting filled withlearning and relaxation. Day trips and tours, as well as deep-sea fishing, areavailable for those interested.

EOA is pleased to announce that James Richard Bowen, MDis the 2017 Presidential Guest Speaker. Dr. Bowen is aNemours Professor of Orthopaedic Education and Researchand a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at the Nemours/Alfred I.duPont Hospital for Children. He also serves as Professor ofOrthopedic Surgery at both Jefferson Medical College ofThomas Jefferson University and Georgetown University

Medical Center, Washington, DC. Dr. Bowen served as the Surgeon in Chiefand Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery from 1984-2005.

Dr. Bowen is a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina, wherehe also completed his training in general surgery. He completed a residencyprogram in orthopaedics at Albany Medical Center Hospital in New York andin pediatric orthopaedics at the duPont Hospital for Children. Dr. Bowen alsoserved in the military as Major, USA, MEDDAC, Fort Bragg Womack ArmyHospital for two years. He is certified by the National Board of MedicalExaminers and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. His clinicalinterests include scoliosis, hip disorders and growth discrepancies.

EOA is pleased to have Dick Yuengling deliver the 2017Howard Steel Lecture. Mr. Yuengling was born and raisedin Pottsville, PA. He graduated from Pottsville High Schoolin 1961 and attended Lycoming College in Williamsport,PA for one year, longing to become involved full time atthe family brewery. During high school and college, Dickspent his summers in various jobs throughout the plant.He served six years (from the late 1960’s to early 1970’s)in the Pennsylvania National Guard.

Dick worked at the plant until 1973 and then bought his own beerdistributorship in Schuylkill County. In 1985, Dick bought the company fromhis father who had become ill. At that time, the brewery was selling 137,000barrels of beer. Dick made the decision to bring in an outside sales andmarketing manager to stimulate the company’s growth. He committed tomaking the necessary to investments in his brewery and do what it took tosurvive and grow his company.

Since those early days, the brewery has grown twenty times in size,reaching a milestone of over 2.7 million barrels and this year, celebrating its188th Anniversary. With distribution now in 20 states, the brewery currentlymarkets seven products year round, plus three seasonal beers.

Dick resides in Pottsville and is deeply involved in his hometown. He is amember of the Chamber of Commerce, the local volunteer fire departments,and the Pottsville Lions Club. Dick has also served on the Board of Directorsfor Keystone Financial Corporation as well as the Pottsville Hospital. He isan active member of the Pennsylvania Brewers Association and the NationalBeer Wholesalers Association.

Dick’s four daughters are Wendy, Jennifer, Debbie and Sheryl. They workfull-time at the brewery to ensure the Yuengling remains a family businessfor generations to come.

3. Allow participants to assess potential deficienciesin their knowledge base as it pertains to thepractice of orthopedic surgery

4. Present ample opportunities for participants toexchange ideas with the presenters, the facultyand other enrollees through paper presentations,guest lectureships, symposia, multimediaeducational sessions and poster exhibits.

OBJECTIVESEducational objectives will be met through a combination ofpaper presentations, lectures and workshops in plenary,concurrent and specialty sessions with ample time affordedfor open discussion. The following objectives will beaddressed during the Scientific Program, such that at theconclusion of this course the attendees will be expected to:

5. Improve their diagnostic, treatment and technicalskills in the management orthopaedic afflictionsby assimilation of scientific advances.

6. Discuss basic science paradigms as they relateto treatment advances.

7. Understand some of the basic principals inpractice management.

8. Critically assess emerging trends in orthopedicmedicine and evaluate their evidence basis.
