1 Integrate Entuity with Oracle Enterprise Manager

Entuity® network management provides a top-down segmented view of a network by grouping physical and virtual network components together that support a specific business function. The integration with Oracle Enterprise Manager allows these network services to be associated with the other hardware and software components managed by Oracle Enterprise Manager that constitute a complete application view of service delivery. This powerful association allows enterprises to quickly detect network problems affecting application service delivery that are otherwise hidden from their view.

Oracle Enterprise Manager

Oracle Enterprise Manager provides management capabilities across the entire application stack of an enterprise's IT infrastructure, e.g. hardware, middleware, databases, applications, and IT services made available to the (end) business user.

Oracle Enterprise Manager provides automation and simplification of many administrative and operational tasks, e.g. management of configuration, monitoring the health of key IT assets. A major benefit of Oracle Enterprise Manager is automation of early detection and isolation of problems that can severally impact availability of IT assets when left unattended. Oracle Enterprise Manager’s knowledge of a large portion of the entire application stack allows operators to understand how problems emanating from one layer impact the other layers and how to best prioritize their remedy.

Network Management Plug-in for Oracle Enterprise Manager

Entuity Network Management Plug-in for Oracle Enterprise Manager adds the network component to Oracle Enterprise Manager’s application stack. This integration requires a valid license and inclusion of configuration files to Entuity. The integration includes:

Two management plug-in archives: Entuity Network Manager allows Oracle Enterprise Manager to access Entuity’s

network performance data, including the receiving of event information through forwarded traps. This plug-in includes two inventory reports and provides links back to key pages and perspectives within Entuity.

Entuity Network Service allows Oracle Enterprise Manager to include Entuity network infrastructure service state data in to its service management.

A sample configuration file for configuring Entuity to forward traps to Oracle Enterprise Manager.

In summary, the Entuity integration with Oracle Enterprise Manager allows users to:

Understand how well the network layer supports IT assets monitored in Oracle Enterprise Manager

Entuity® Network Management Plug-in for Oracle® Enterprise Manager Guide 7

Entuity Network Management Plug-in for Oracle Enterprise Manager

View key network issues detected by Entuity directly within the Oracle Enterprise Manager interface in the form of (important) network alerts

View a list of network services that the network has to support and monitor their current and historical status directly within Oracle Enterprise Manager. Entuity network services automate the monitoring of the impact of low-level infrastructure performance on business services and applications.

Include network services as a component of Oracle Enterprise Manager managed services, allowing for clear identification of the state of the network infrastructure underpinning the delivery of each service

Understand the health of the network by reporting the reachability of Entuity business views, which are master sets of devices

Generate network performance information in Oracle Enterprise Manager using Entuity data

View network inventory, with Entuity providing for devices under its management key inventory information, e.g. manufacturer, model, firmware version

Launch the Entuity web UI directly from Oracle Enterprise Manager for simplification of work flows, easy drilldown, when troubleshooting network problems

Launch Entuity Business Perspectives, network dashboards for business users and senior staff, directly from Oracle Enterprise Manager, and also launch Entuity’s report center which contains an extensive set of network related reports

Add an abstraction of a network monitoring point (Entuity server) as a managed target within Oracle Enterprise Manager, to monitor the health of your network infrastructure.

Module Availability

This integration is available with Entuity. (For details on Entuity’s technical specification see the Entuity Getting Started Guide.) Entuity Integration Module for Oracle Enterprise Manager is approved for use with Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.

Module Security

Entuity access permissions are granted based on view membership according to the standard Entuity security model. The Entuity user account you use when configuring the Entuity agent in Oracle Enterprise Manager determines the data Entuity can forward to it.

The events Entuity can forward are determined by the user account used with the Entuity event forwarding function, snmpforward.

Entuity Preparing for Deployment

Preparing for Deployment

Before you deploy the plug-in:

Ensure Entuity is installed and licensed for Oracle Enterprise Manager. When running the Entuity webserver using the https protocol with a certificate from an

unrecognized authority, register the certificate. (See Using HTTPS with Self-Certified Certificates.)

Set-up in Entuity the user accounts Oracle Enterprise Manager requires to access Entuity. (See the Entuity User and System Administrator Guide.)

Ensure Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c is the version to which you are installing the integration.This integration requires that you setup the Oracle Enterprise Manager Command Line Interface (emcli) and a repository for management plug-in archives. (See the Oracle Enterprise Manager documentation.)

Using HTTPS with Self-Certified Certificates

You can configure Entuity to run under HTTPS using certificates from recognized certification authorities or self-certified certificates. When using Entuity with a certificate that is not from a recognized certification authority, then you must register a certificate trust with the agent monitoring the Entuity components.

For example, to register a certificate (in a Linux environment):

1) Change directory to the AGENT_HOME/bin directory, where AGENT_HOME is the agent directory containing all of the files required to configure and run the Oracle Management Agent on this host, for example /opt/oracle/Middleware/agent/agent_inst/.

2) Register the certificate:

./emctl secure add_trust_cert_to_jks -password welcome -trust_certs_loc <MyCACert.txt> -alias privateAuth

where:

-trust_certs_loc parameter must contain the path and filename of the trusted_certs.txt file. This file must only contain certificates in base64 format and no special characters or empty lines.

3) When the certificate is registered stop and then restart the agent.

From the AGENT_HOME/bin directory enter:

emctl stop agent

emctl start agent

Entuity recommend you always consult the Oracle Enterprise Manager documentation when configuring Oracle Enterprise Manager.

You can configure Entuity to automatically forward events to the Oracle Enterprise Manager server. Entuity includes a sample configuration file, with default settings that restrict the number of event types Entuity forwards.

Figure 16 SNMP Trap Forwarding Integration Architecture

An overview of Entuity’s SNMP Trap Forwarding integration is:

1) Entuity generates event data.

2) Entuity configures the event data ready for forwarding.

The snmpforward configuration specifies the trap forwarding filter, for example the type of events that can be forwarded as traps if they occur in the specified view.

3) snmpforward sends data to Oracle Enterprise Manager.

Entuity® Network Management Plug-in for Oracle® Enterprise Manager Guide 27

Entuity Configuring Entuity snmpforward

4) Oracle Enterprise Manager accepts the traps data, recognizing the originating Entuity server from the trap source’s IP address.

5) From the Entuity home page Oracle Enterprise Manager users can view Entuity event data as mapped alerts.

Configuring Entuity snmpforward

Configuration of the SNMP trap forwarding process, snmpforward, is through two files:

entuity_home\etc\startup_O/S_site_specific.cfg, which contains a section that references the forwarding configuration file, and a routing section within it, applied to an instance of snmpforward. When Entuity starts, snmpforward also starts using the defined configuration.

snmpforward configuration file. Entuity includes a sample configuration file entuity_home\etc\snmpforward_oem.cfg. It configures the events to forward, the user accounts to use and the Oracle Enterprise Manager server.

snmpforward_oem.cfg is backed-up to entuity_home\etc\bkp during Entuity upgrades, and the version in entuity_home\etc overwritten. When you use snmpforward_oem.cfg you should reapply your site specific changes after an upgrade, alternatively rename your snmpforward configuration file.

Using the Sample Configuration

This section details the changes required to use the sample configuration in entuity_home\etc\snmpforward_oem.cfg. To view more details on how to configure snmpforward for Oracle Enterprise Manager see Appendix B - Integration Configuration Files. (See the Entuity User and System Administrator Guide for snmpforward details.)

The sample integration allows forwarding of seven event types to Oracle Enterprise Manager. Events are specified in the [include_events] section of the snmpforward configuration file, using the event name to identify the event type. (For a full list of event names see the Entuity Events Reference Manual.)

The sample configuration forwards seven event types:

Entuity Configuring Entuity snmpforward

To configure snmpforward to forward events as traps to an Oracle Enterprise Manager, configure sections:

1) From the snmpforward configuration file set the routing parameters:

[snmp_route_1]

agent_addr=127.0.0.1

where:

agent_addr, sets the IP address used by Entuity to forward traps. It must match the IP address entered when configuring the SNMP trap source in Oracle Enterprise Manager.

2) From the snmpforward configuration file, set the Entuity user account and view used by snmpforward:

[snmp_reader_1]

username=admin

view=Regional

where:

username is the Entuity user account used with snmpforward. view is the Entuity business view from which Entuity forwards events. You can only

specify one view.

3) From the destination section of the snmpforward configuration file, set the Oracle Enterprise Manager to which the traps are sent:

[snmp_dest_1]

host1=oracle_em_server:3872

where:

hostn specifies the IP address, or hostname, and SNMP port number, 3872, of the target Oracle Enterprise Manager server. You can specify one or more hosts.

4) Update the appropriate start configuration file (e.g. startup_win32_site_specific.cfg, startup_unix_site_specific.cfg) to initialize snmpforward when the Entuity server starts.

An example section is included in snmpforward_oem.cfg, which you can copy to the startup file:

[oem_snmpforward]

state=normal

capabilities=polling

type=command

start=${ENTUITY_HOME}${FPS}integ${FPS}SNMP${FPS}snmpforward${ENTUITY_HOME}${FPS}etc${FPS}snmpforward_oem.cfg snmp_route_1

Entuity® Network Management Plug-in for Oracle® Enterprise Manager Guide 29

Entuity Configuring Entuity snmpforward

directory=${LOGDIR}

is_critical=n

where the only parameter you might want to amend is:

start, which defines the location and name of the configuration file and routing section applied to snmpforward.

5) Stop and restart the Entuity server for the configuration changes to take effect.

Appendix A Entuity Events in Oracle Enterprise Manager

The sample configuration detailed through snmpforward_oem.cfg, forwards seven event types to the Oracle Enterprise Manager.

The integration maps Entuity severity levels to Oracle Enterprise Manager severity levels.

Entuity event severity and event description are configurable from the Entuity client, through the Preferences dialog. When you amend these settings from the client on the Entuity server the forwarded events include these changes.

AvailMonitor Low View Device Reachability

Entuity measures device reachability by pinging a monitored device’s IP management address every two minutes. Entuity raises this event when the number of devices responding to the ICMP ping and therefore reachable is, expressed as a percentage, below the Device Reachability threshold for the view.

Default severity level: severe, color code: orange.

Typical CausesHigh utilization of the area of the network where the devices within the view are.

ActionsInvestigate the devices within the view. If the device reporting the event is a router, then Telnet to the router to ascertain possible causes for the outage.

AvailMonitor Normal View Device Reachability

Entuity measures device reachability by pinging a monitored device’s IP management address every two minutes. Entuity raises this event when the number of devices responding to the ICMP ping and therefore reachable is, expressed as a percentage, is now above the Device Reachability threshold for the view.

Default severity level: information, color code: green.

Typical CausesDevice reachability within the view has transitioned to be within the set threshold

ActionsNone.

Network Outage

Network Outage events are raised on information Entuity collects using traceroute and ICMP ping. It indicates an outage on your network, caused for example by node failure, unreachability of a managed port.

The Details column of the event indicates the particular category of the outage, how Entuity identifies the outage category is a product of how it handles traceroute data. Entuity discovers all IP addresses configured on a device and then determines which ports, if any, these IP addresses belong to. The success of this association is dependent on the structure of the SNMP MIB. Also if a port is unmanaged within Entuity then an IP address cannot be associated with the port.

Default severity level: critical, color code: red.

Typical CausesThe Details column in Event Viewer indicates the particular cause of the outage:

Managed IP On Device Unreachable: Indicates that an IP address is not responding to ping: The port for the IP address is not managed by Entuity but the device is managed by

Entuity. This may be caused by a routing problem, interface shutdown. Entuity cannot determine the port associated with the IP address because the IP

address is not fixed to a port. Port Unreachable: Indicates that an IP address that is associated with a port is not

responding to ping. When Entuity is managing the device through a network cloud, Entuity raises this event when some of the device’s IP addresses are down. Event details lists the unreachable IP addresses in the cloud.

Node Unreachable: Indicates that all of the IP addresses of a network node are not responding to ping. The node (typically a router or a switch) has transitioned to the down state.When Entuity is managing the device through a network cloud, Entuity raises this event when all of the device’s IP addresses are down. Event details lists the unreachable IP addresses in the cloud.

Entuity Server disconnected from network: Indicates that all discovered IP addresses are not responding to ping, suggesting the disconnection of the Entuity server from the network.

Entuity® Network Management Plug-in for Oracle® Enterprise Manager Guide 46

Entuity Network Outage Cleared

The Network Outage event is only raised against devices that are the root cause of the outage, the Device Unreachable event, when enabled, is raised against any device Entuity identifies as unreachable.

ActionsIn the Impacted column of Event Viewer Entuity displays a count of the nodes, servers and applications impacted by the port down or node failure. You can view the list of impacted objects - or at least those components for which you have permission to view - by from the context sensitive menu clicking Show Details.

When Entuity raises a network outage event the action you take depends upon the event type raised, on your network administrator role and whether you have physical access to the device. When event Details identifies the cause of the outage as:

Managed IP On Device Unreachable or Port UnreachableFor these two categories check that the relevant network is routable from Entuity. If the network is not routable and this is:

Intentional then to prevent the raising of this event consider excluding the network from Entuity management through Entuity's configuration settings.

A Port Unreachable network outage check the operation status of the port. If this is down it may indicate a damaged or pulled out cable or that the device at the other end of the link has failed.

Node UnreachableIf all of a device's IP addresses are not responding to ping and the device is also not responding to SNMP polling it is probable that the node has failed. You can review the incident history for the device, for example for fan failure and temperature incidents. If the device does not restart the only recourse is a physical inspection.

Entuity Server disconnected from networkFrom the Entuity server machine use the ping utility installed as part of its operating system to ping network devices. If ping fails to elicit a response check for Access Control Lists and firewalls that may be blocking ICMP ping. If ping succeeds check that the server's firewall permits applicationMonitor access, you may have to add a rule for the Entuity process.

Network Outage Cleared

Indicates an outage on your network, caused for example by node failure, unreachability of a managed port is now resolved.

Default severity level: information, color code: green.

Typical CausesThe Details column in Event Viewer indicates the particular network outage clearance:

Managed IP Address Reachable

h

Entuity® Network Management Plug-in for Oracle® Enterprise Manager Guide 47

Entuity Service Down

Indicates that the IP address is now responding to ping. The port for the IP address is not managed by Entuity, but the device is managed by Entuity.

Port ReachableIndicates that a port is once again responding to ping. For router ports a filter ensures only ports with an associated IP address are included.

Node ReachableIndicates that a node (typically a router or a switch) has transitioned to the up state. All of the IP addresses of a network node do not respond to ping.

Entuity Server connected to the networkIndicates a restored connection of the Entuity server to the network.

ActionsNone.

Service Down

Indicates the named service is down.

Typical CausesThe number of components failing in the service is sufficient to cause the service to fail.

ActionsClick Dashboards > Service Summary. You can view the current status of all services and then select the required service to drill down and view the status of its components.

Service State Off

Indicates the named service is now set to not generate a state. The event details indicate Status is set to None.

Typical CausesUser has amended the service configuration setting Type to None.

ActionsNone

Service State Unknown

Indicates the state of the named service is unknown.

Default severity level: severe, color code: orange.

Typical CausesThe state of one or more of the components in the service is unknown.
