GMS Focus Training Seminar

E nterprises Shipping & Trading S.A. suc-cessfully participated in the 2018 Athens Focus Training Seminar and fulfilled the

annual TTX requirement as a USCG Non-tank Vessel Response Planholder and a California Contingency Planholder. The FTS is an interac-tive, seminar-style exercise and lecture that takes one day to complete.

The seminar was conducted by our QI, “Gallagher Marine Services” on Tuesday 15 May 2018 at the Divani Apollon Palace & Thal-asso and in addition to the

VRP/NTVRP Activation

It is paramount that the Master immediately notifies the QI when an incident occurs. The QI will then pro-

vide guidance on actions that need to be taken.

*** Attention: All notifications are to be initiated imme-

diately, or within 30 minutes of incident discovery, at most.

I t is with great pleasure to an-nounce that Enterprises Shipping and Trading S.A. has once again

been awarded with the “GOLD RE-SPONSIBLE MANAGEMENT EXCELLENCE” AWARD at the annual European Busi-ness Ethics Network awards ceremony. The GOLD RME Award was presented to EST by EBEN Greece President Antho-ny Gortzis at a ceremony held at the “Aigli Zapeiou” on 4th July 2018.

This great accomplishment is a result of the efforts made by all employees with-in the company, shore based and sea-going, to ensure social, cultural, eco-nomical and environmental sustainabil-ity. The EBEN Model is a voluntary standard that provides guidelines to the compa-nies that want to operate in a socially responsible, ethical and transparent manner.

annual drill accreditation hosted a number of prominent speakers, who focused on the follow-ing subjects:

Mr. Matthew Reudelhuber, USCG Environmen-tal Protection Specialist discussed U.S Ballast Water Regulations & Developments.

ITOPF Senior Technical Advisor Ms. Pauline Marchand provided an overview on the Role of ITOPF in Pollution Incidents.

Mr. Thomas Wiker, GMS Vice President provid-ed a very thorough North American Regulato-ry Update.

Mr. Stamatis Fradelos of ABS provided an over-view on “Air Emissions – Regulatory Update & Compliance Options”.

During the seminar it was stressed out that the USCG considers that the ship has successfully activated the VRP/NTVRP ONLY when the QI has been noti-fied. We therefore take this opportunity to remind you that the QI should be immediately notified of a discharge or even of a substantial threat of dis-charge in the US.

POS IDONIA 2018 The In t e rna t i ona l Sh ipp ing Exh ib i t i on

Pos idon ia i s a Rea l Dea l

T he world’s most prestigious shipping trade event has scaled new heights this year with an unprecedented display of the collective

might and minds of a gigantic global industry which accounts for nearly 95 percent of interna-tional trade.

While the commercial aspect of Posidonia has long been acknowledged as one of the world’s most prolific, the event has also grown to be the bellwether of world ship-ping and this year, a total of 40 seminars and conferences set the global maritime agen-da, debating the burning is-sues of environmental regula-tions, safety, clean fuel, lead-ership and digitalisation.

And as the gates of the Ath-ens Metropolitan Expo

closed to bid farewell to the 2,009 exhibiting compa-

nies and some 23,500 visi-tors from 92 countries, the Posidonia Exhibition opens

a new chapter in its 50-year-long legacy with an ambi-tion to celebrate a century of achievements in tandem

with the expansion and growth of the Greek ocean

going merchant marine fleet, which today ac-

counts for 20 percent of the global and 50 percent of Europe’s dwt capacity.

Day of the Seafarer - 25 June 2018

sz

T his year, once again, 25 June marks the annual Day of the Seafarer (DotS).

Seafarers wellbeing 2017 and 2018 have seen strong momentum in the industry to address seafarer's wellbeing, particularly their mental health.

To give further exposure to this important issue, IMO’s choice for the 2018 Day of the Seafarer theme is "seafarers' wellbeing".

By addressing the issue of seafarers' wellbeing and particularly mental health, this campaign can in-form specific strategies to tackle stress and other issues affecting seafarers' mental conditions - and make the tools available more widely known.

The campaign seeks to highlight and showcase best practices and good examples but will also, inevitably, bring out areas of concern and exam-ples of shortcomings. This year, IMO will also promote good initiatives and material developed by various maritime stakeholders to advocate for higher standards of

welfare as well as highlight what they are doing to improve conditions for seafarers regarding issues re-lated to seafarers' wellbeing, such as: Shore leave Abandonment Mental health Wages No criminalization Repatriation Resources available to Positive Mental Health MLC convention

The Day of the Seafarer recognizes the unique and vital role of seafarers in the global community and thus we take this opportunity to thank all our seamen onboard and ashore for their valuable contribution. Source: https://www.imo.org

W e would like to thank the crew of the following vessels for submitting their IDEAS as well as the Captains for supporting them do so which had as a result the submission of numerous IDE-As during the months of May and June.

m/t Energy Puma mv Jaguar Max mv Furious The company is currently collecting all IDEAS from the fleet which will be pre-sented to the Management and feedback shall be provided at the end of the September. For those who are about to submit their ideas, please check out our issue 133 for more information. Having in mind that all of us have good ideas for improving our job and the Company as a whole, we expect the participation from all ranks.

Best Pract ices from the Industry: Retro-Ref lect ive Door Handles

A s already mentioned in our previous news-letter, the value of implementing “Best Practices” that can improve safety stand-

ards onboard or simplify our daily performance is of great importance especially, when they address matters related to chaotic processes or dangerous work spaces.

Of even greater importance is to share them with the rest of the fleet.

This best practice” is from the industry, but definitely, among EST vessels there are plenty more already in place which we would like to publish them in our forthcoming newsletters.

As such, please send us your “Best Practices” through the Near Miss software and keep in mind of company’s initiative to reward the three most mean-ingful near misses / best practices.

Retro-reflective strips have been fitted around the door handles on cabin and exit doors making the handle easy to see in smoke or darkness.

New QHSE Safety Campaign: Slips, Trips & Falls: Identification and Prevention

kg

A few days ago, we launched a Safety Campaign focusing on the identification of the causes of Slips, Trips & Falls (STF) and their prevention.

But what is so special about slips, trips and falls? They are ‘accidents’ aren’t they, part and parcel of life; maybe something which have to be expected aboard ships, which are mobile, sometimes even violently moving, places of work? They are special because STF represent nearly one in three of the large personal injury claims submitted to Clubs. They are also special because they repre-sent, not just money, or the squashed metal or dam-aged ships, but genuine pain and suffering from people who have been injured or even killed, be-cause they have slipped, tripped or fallen on board a ship. So these claims go beyond numbers, each of them a story of individual injury, which has hap-pened because of a moment’s carelessness, thoughtlessness or complacency, as people have moved around a ship, possibly doing their jobs, or

even just because the ship is not only their place of work, but where they live. A proactive and precautionary approach can be very useful in reducing the incidents of STF, in first identifying hazards which have the potential to hurt people. Very often accidents occur because nobody has considered that what they are doing might be hazardous. Just walking around the ship with a sharp eye and an open mind can help to identify features which might, in an unguarded moment, hurt people. The Campaign focuses on the root causes and the other factors increasing the risk of STF incidents and provides useful tips on how to prevent them. The material can be used as food for thought dur-ing onboard training sessions, while each seaman will be invited to share his relevant experiences and reflect on the lessons learnt, to the mutual benefit of the whole group.

IMO Data Col lect ion System ( IMO-DCS)

B oth the EU and the IMO are ambitious to reduce GHG (greenhouse gases) emis-sions from ships, and two similar -albeit

separate for the moment- regimes have been in-troduced: EU MRV – EU Monitoring, Reporting and Verifica-tion of CO2 emissions (data collection started 1 January 2018) IMO DCS - IMO Data Collection System on fuel consumption (data collection starts 1 Jan-uary 2019) Both EU MRV and IMO DCS requirements are mandatory, and intend to be the first step in a process to collect and analyze emission data re-lated to the shipping industry.

Whilst the EU scheme is focused on CO2 emissions from shipping activities to, from and within the EU area, the IMO scheme covers emissions from ship-ping globally. Whether, how and when the two regimes will converge is not yet decided.

■ 2019 (1 January to 31 December) ■ Reporting to verifier by the end of March 2020

■ The data collection and reporting methodology

shall be described in an SEEMP Part II. ■ Part II is an integrated part of the Ship Energy

Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP). ■ Confirmation of compliance by Flag or Recog-

nized Organization (RO) ■ The deadline for confirmation of compliance

with the SEEMP Part II is 31 December 2018.

As we get closer to the IMO DCS implementation dates, we will keep you informed concerning the issuance of your ship’s SEEMP Part II. Source: https://www.dnvgl.com/maritime/imo-dcs

Loose C l icks “sink” Ships

L ike the previous cyber awareness posters that we have published in EST Newsletter, this month’s featured poster is part of the

“Be Cyber Aware at Sea campaign”. Along with a short film, the poster graphically illustrates how a simple click on your computer could lead to the ultimate disaster of a ship sinking. All users must therefore:

Be wary of pop ups, emails and websites asking

for sensitive information. Stop and Think: Be suspicious of “warning notic-

attachments. Be extra cautious of files: .exe .scr or .bin

Tobacco: What You Don't Know Can Kill You

I t is widely known that smoking tobacco can damage the lungs. But many people do not know that it can also cause heart disease and

stroke. That information comes from World Health Organi-zation (WHO) officials in Geneva, Switzerland. The WHO marked May 31 as World No Tobacco Day. The WHO’s 2018 campaign focuses on the damage smoking does to the cardiovascular system. Health experts at the WHO say that cardiovascular diseases (CVD) kill about 18 million people each year. Tobacco use and second hand smoke exposure cause nearly 17% of all heart dis-ease deaths. They add that tobacco use is the sec-ond leading cause of cardiovascular disease, after high blood pressure. Douglas Bettcher is the director for the prevention of non-communicable diseases at the WHO. He says most people know that smoking increases the risk of

lung diseases and cancer. However, studies show many of these same people do not know that tobacco use can also cause heart attacks and stroke. "There are major gaps in the knowledge of cardi-ovascular disease risks of tobacco use. And in many countries, these knowledge gaps are very substantial. The percentage of adults who do not believe that smoking causes stroke are, for exam-ple, in China, as high as 73 percent." Knowledge is power. And, in this case, knowledge can save lives.

The global tobacco epidemic kills more than 7 million people each year, of which close to 900 000 are non-smokers dying from breathing sec-ond-hand smoke. Nearly 80% of the more than 1 billion smokers worldwide live in low- and middle-income countries, where the burden of tobacco-related illness and death is heavies .

On Macron’s orders: France will bring back compulsory national service

The French government will trial the programme Uni-versal National Service in 2019. Girls and boys will have to do a minimum one-month placement, with a focus on civic culture. That could involve teach-ing, working with charities, and traditional military training with the police, fire service or army. They can then volunteer to do a further three months to a year after that, which could involve an area linked to defense and security, or more volun-teer work. Putin-Trump meeting agreed

1. France vs. Argentina

This is the first of the quarterfinals and it is a heck of a way to start. Argentina will be hungrily seeking goals, as Messi doesn’t trust the defense to hold out for long. France may back itself to go straight for the throat, and this one figures to be fierce, fast and full of thrills.

2. Brazil vs. Mexico A Mexico win would be a huge shock and would end the curse of having lost at this stage

six straight times. Who better to do it against? Realis-tically, Brazil should be too sharp and has a greater sense of steel about it these days. The joyful flam-boyance and attacking mind-set has not been lost though, and given that Mexico is going to throw everything it has into this one, it is a must-see.

3. Spain vs. Russia The loca-tion of the game, Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, will be to Russia’s

liking, but on paper that’s about the only ad-vantage it has. Spain was shaky during group play but has quality all over and might be ready to burst out. If it can overcome the roars of a fierce patriotic home crowd, the 2010 champion should be fine. Either way, it is going to be fun.

4. Uruguay vs. Portugal Ronaldo carries the spirit of Portugal with him, and it is hard to see it winning unless he sparkles. Will the supporting cast be strong enough? The South Amer-

icans have attacking firepower of their own, plus a true world-class star in Luis Suarez, who loves playing in the World Cup and always seems to hit the head-lines somehow.

5. Colombia vs. England

England got the path it wanted by finishing second in the group and now has a deep run in its sights. Colombia’s determined display against Senegal to book a second-round position showed what it is all about. This is a more level contest than many realize.

6. Croatia vs. Denmark

A chance to watch one of the World Cup’s most enjoyable teams, Croatia, and arguably its most

productive contributor so far in Luka Modric. of Real Madrid. Denmark can’t match the Croats for overall skill and technical movement, but the Danes are a rugged bunch who will surely be in a typically un-compromising mood.

7. Belgium vs. Japan

Belgium has one of the strongest squads in the tour-nament, however, will love that it has landed this matchup. The eight goals it scored in its first two games was a far truer reflection of its ability than that farcical third match against England, and Bel-gium believes it can go deep. Much will depend of the feisty Japanese squad’s ability to stay solid at the back and to withstand what figures to be an early onslaught.

8. Sweden vs. Switzerland

Not a bad game by any means, and hats off to both of these nations for earning their place in the Round of 16. Earning is the right word for it, with Swe-den guaranteeing its spot by holding its nerve and taking care of business against Mexico.
