ENSHRINEMENT 2010Mason Square Monument
•Although the City of Springfield and Springfield College are recognized as the “place” where the game of “Basket Ball” was invented, no monument or marker celebrates the exact spot where the first game was played•A Springfield native and Mason Square resident has undertaken a significant project to commemorate and celebrate the location of the first game in Mason Square•The project has broad and enthusiastic support from the neighborhoods, the city, and the Basketball Hall of Fame
ENSHRINEMENT 2010State & Sherman Street
ENSHRINEMENT 2010
Proper Recognition- “The First Game”•With streetscape improvements, a safe and secure
location has been identified by the city just across the street from the location of the original “School for Christian Workers” gymnasium•While busy State Street intersects the proposed monument location and the exact spot where the first game was played, a second piece will mark the exact spot and both sites are linked in the evening by a strong beam of light emanating from both sites
ENSHRINEMENT 2010Proper Recognition- “The First Game”•The city will construct a 30 foot circumference area of granite and brick to have the look of a contemporary basketball.•Five information panels, up-lit at night, will rise and tell the story of the first game and the significance of the Mason Square location•Two brass statues– one 7 feet in height– will mark the spot of the first game.•Concept: a player from 1891 is passing to a youth of today– from the Mason Square neighborhood– to mark the games beginning, its impact today, and the future impact of basketball on the world stage
ENSHRINEMENT 2010The Benefits•A historically significant site in Springfield is honored and celebrated•A challenged neighborhood community is “finally recognized” for a worldwide contribution•Pride is built in the city and in the neighborhood•The monument becomes an educational resource for the
five public schools within walking distance •The monument becomes a historical site to visit by tourists drawn to the Hall of Fame to live basketball history
ENSHRINEMENT 2010
A Monument of Significance• The total project has a value exceeding $200,000• The City of Springfield Parks Department will commit
$35,000 in site, foundation and electrical work• The Hall of Fame has negotiated the services of its
Master Sculptor Brian Hanlon (Tom’s River, NJ) at no cost for design and hand sculpting of the pieces ($50,000 cost savings)
