Your next essential step in becoming an Eagle is registering to attend Student Orientation, Advising and Registration . . . we call it SOAR. All first-year students are required to participate in one of the sessions. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend.

During your SOAR session, you will register for classes, have your photo taken for your EagleCard (that’s your student ID), sign up for a meal plan and so much more! We also encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to:

• Talk with a financial aid counselor• Learn more about programs and services during the Academic and Service Fair• Meet with a representative from the housing office• Talk with a representative from your academic department of interest• Visit the University Bookstore• Socialize with other first-year students• Talk to current Eagles about ways to get involved on campus

ACT scores have a significant impact on your college career. As you know, your ACT is a part of Morehead State’s admission requirement, but you may not know the classes you will take your first year of college and the scholarships you are eligible for are also influenced by your ACT scores.

Your subtest scores in English, math and reading provide readiness information about specific academic areas. If your test scores in one or more area fall below the readiness standards listed here, you will be required to take a placement test(s) to determine whether you will need to take developmental education courses in that specific area.

These courses may extend the amount of time required to graduate because these credit hours do not count toward degree completion. The higher you score on each subtest, the more beneficial it is for you.

ACT COLLEGE READINESS REQUIREMENTSThe Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education has designated the following readiness standards.

English Math Reading18 19 20 22 (College Algebra) 27 (Calculus)

If you do not meet the college readiness standards, or your ACT scores aren’t where you would like them to be, you have the option to retake the ACT.

Statistics show that careful preparation can lead to improved scores. The most cost effective action is to study and retake the ACT. If you do not meet the readiness standards upon retaking the ACT, you will be required to complete placement testing.

PLACEMENT TESTINGYou will take a placement test in the subtest area(s) in which you have scored below the readiness standard. For example, if you scored 19 in reading, you will be required to take the reading placement test.

The results from this test will determine whether you are ready to enroll in a college level general education course or if you need to complete a developmental course. You are encouraged to take placement test(s) as early as possible.

The following placement testing options are available at MSU’s Office of University Assessment & Testing:

ACT Residual: If you prepare for the ACT Residual, you may improve your score(s) to the readiness standards. There is a fee for this exam.

COMPASS Exam: Take the specific section(s) of the COMPASS exam in the area(s) where you do not meet the readiness standards. Check with your guidance counselor to see if the exam is offered at your high school.

To take the COMPASS, you must pay a fee. For a list of test sites, visit www.act.org/compass/sites.

KYOTE Math Placement Exam: You may take the KYOTE math placement test if you do not meet the readiness standard in math. This is a free exam.

Your college experience is about learning, but there’s a lot to learn outside the classroom too! Getting involved with a student organization, participating in community service projects through the Center for Regional Engagement (CRE), performing in a musical or theatrical performance, or even getting a job on campus are all great ways to enhance to your education and build your resume.

With more than 100 student organizations, you’re sure to fi nd one (or several) opportunities that are right for you. When you’re on campus for SOAR, make sure to talk to current Eagles about the organizations that you may be interested in joining this fall.

Whether you’re serious about your workouts, or just want to hang out with friends, you’ll fi nd what you’re looking for at the Recreation & Wellness Center. The state-of-the-art facility merges aquatics, fi tness and wellness, and intramurals in a 100,000 square foot building. It houses three basketball courts, a competition size pool with zipline and vortex, fi tness area complete with various types of workout equipment, walking track, racquetball courts and locker rooms. We offer a variety group fi tness classes throughout the week and have personal trainers on staff. For leisure time, the lounge area is home to two 32” televisions, air hockey and more.

Prefer to spend your time outside? A large lawn provides space for all types of outdoor activities. Feeling adventurous? Challenge yourself with the ropes course or take a break from campus on an Outdoor Adventures get-a-way. Student trips include hiking, canoeing, rock climbing and much more. Don’t forget Eagle Lake is just steps away and Cave Run Lake, home to great fi shing, boating, camping or backpacking, is only a short drive from campus. Living on campus allows you to connect with the campus community by meeting new people and sharing new experiences. We offer a variety of housing options including traditional double occupancy/community bath style residence halls, suites with a large living room area, private in-room bathroom/shower area shared by four individuals, and apartment style living.

To apply for on-campus housing, visit www.moreheadstate.edu/housing to complete your application and pay your $200 housing deposit. There is no deadline to apply, but keep in mind room assignments are made in the order they are received. The earlier your application is received, the better your chances are of receiving the accommodation and roommate you requested. Your room assignment will be sent to your MSU email prior to the fall semester.

At MSU, all first-year students under the age of 21 are required to live in University housing. Apartment housing is reserved for students who have accumulated a minimum of 48 college credit hours with a cumulative 2.5 GPA. For special consideration, including the need for year-round housing, contact the Office of Housing.

MEAL PLANSIt may not be home cooking, but don’t worry, you won’t go hungry. All first-year students enroll in a meal plan to make sure you have food available from the first day of classes to the last. We offer a variety of plans to choose from and have an enormous variety of dining options – from our all-you-care-to-eat restaurant to national brands such as Chick-fil-A, Starbucks and Taco Bell.
