Enrichment at Hills Road Sixth Form College
All Year 12 students follow a compulsory Enrichment activity, which can be taken as either a full-year course, running over two terms, or two half-year courses (i.e. one course in Term 1 and another in Term 2).
The Enrichment programme is designed to extend and broaden students’ A level programmes through providing the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and experiences in a variety of activities. You will be able to choose which Enrichment activity you’d like to follow from an extensive list found above. These are the Enrichment subjects that are offered in Term 1 for the 2017-2018 academic year.
On Friday 8th September, at 12:40pm, you will be sent a link via e-mail to sign up to your chosen Enrichment. You have until midnight on Sunday 10th to do so. Please ensure you make a considered choice as changes to selected Enrichments will only occur in extreme circumstances. Things to consider are; does the enrichment run over one or two terms? Does the enrichment take place at lunch or after College? Does the enrichment include a payment or specific equipment?
Please note that ONLY Enrichments that fit with your timetable will be shown on your sign-up page. Sign-up is live, and first-come, first-served, so places will disappear as they are taken. Once all are gone, that Enrichment will drop off the list of options.
ONE TERM ENRICHMENTS Start date Mon 11th September. You will be required to choose a Term 2 Enrichment in early Dec, to start in January.

meditation. Mindfulness is, however, based on the principles of meditative reflection, and many people who practice
regularly have found it very effective in dealing with symptoms of stress, anxiety and negative thinking. The course
will introduce you to some of the basic techniques for mindful practice; the extent to which you benefit will depend
entirely on the amount of practice you do in your own time. Each session will involve a review of your experiences of
the previous week’s practice, the introduction of a new technique and some mindfulness practice. Practice will generally
involve sitting or lying quietly, eyes closed, listening to a guided meditation. Loose clothing is preferable but not essential,
shoes will be taken off and you must be comfortable with sitting or lying still for extended periods of time.

COLLEGE SPORTS TEAMS – FULL YEAR
Course Information: Many students have already attended trials for the college sports teams
– badminton, football, hockey, netball, rowing, rugby and tennis. As such you do not need to select
an enrichment because sport will be your enrichment for both terms and this will already be timetabled
to allow you access to training and matches. (You will be blocked from making an enrichment choice)
For those interested in playing volleyball, basketball, Table Tennis, Squash, or taking part in X- Country
(male and female) or Cheerleading, the training for these sports occur after college / lunchtimes so they do not
have timetable implications, as such; you can take part in these sports as well as another enrichment activity.
All sports compete in a wide range of matches, from ‘friendlies’ to Association of Colleges National
Competitions (see a sample of the sports teams’ achievements in the prospectus). With all team sports it
is expected that students will commit themselves for a season’s training and matches. It is sometimes
possible to represent the College in more than one sport, but students need to consider their studies before
committing themselves! Please also be aware that in order to represent the College in these sports it is
important to have your place in the team confirmed following trials and this will appear on your timetable.
There are many other college representative teams e.g. – swimming, equestrian, orienteering etc. further
details will be available at the Societies Fair. However, these activities are not available as enrichment
activities.
Who will this enrichment suit / not suit? For those with an interest in competitive
team sport

DUKE OF EDINBURGH GOLD AWARD (EXPEDITION) – FULL YEAR Course Information: Course information: Please note that all students wishing to take part in D of E at Hills Road will already have applied. If your
place has not been confirmed, your application has not been successful. Many of you may have already taken part in this at Bronze or Silver level
in your present school. You do not need to have completed either Bronze or Silver to take up the Award Scheme at Gold level. At Hills Road you will concentrate on the ‘Expedition’ section of the Award, although you will be given help to get started on the other four sections too. Like other advanced study, you are expected to take more responsibility for the planning and arrangements for your Gold Award and therefore the other sections will be mainly your responsibility! There are five sections to the Award at Gold level: Expedition, Service to the Community, Skill development (over 200 to choose from), Physical activity (individual or team sport), and Residential activity (minimum 5 days with people you don’t know). We aim to provide you with a high and safe level of training
in the classroom and in two expeditions. The experience, group coherence, confidence and spirit engendered will place you in a good position to undertake the assessed expedition which takes place in August/September before you enter the Upper Sixth.
Commitment:
Attendance at all the Expedition Training Sessions. These may take place after college & one will be for a full day on a Saturday. You will be expected to take part in two practice expeditions. These will take place on the first Bank Holiday weekend in May and the last week of your
L6. A final expedition opportunity should be available in the last week of the summer holiday.
You need to have and to keep these dates available. It will be necessary to have personal equipment such as boots, waterproof jacket and trousers, sleeping bag, a large rucksack and compass.
Once the two practice expeditions have been completed we will sign your Award Handbook and help you to plan an assessed venture. It will be necessary to complete both training expeditions, even if you already have a Silver Award. As there are usually too many students asking to take part in the Award Scheme for us to staff safely on expeditions, please write a short statement outlining why you would like to take part on the Scheme. We have to limit our numbers. The following should be considered when writing your statement:
1. Can you attend lessons after College up to 6.30pm when necessary? 2. Could you pursue the Award at another centre? 3. Are you available for the practice trips? This is very important. 4. Have you any ideas for actively following one or more of the other Duke of Edinburgh Award elements (service, skill, residential activity) during the next two
years? 5. Have you had any experiences which show that you will have the personal resources of stamina, perseverance and ability to work in a team which is required
to undertake a four day, 80km walk in wild country?
6. Your enrichment entitlement at Hills Road will be entirely used up by joining the Award Scheme. You will NOT be able to select another. 7. Can you afford the cost of taking part? The total cost for registration with the scheme and all 3 expeditions (including camp fees, transport, insurance, maps
and loan of appropriate equipment where necessary) is £370. Financial help is available to help meet this cost for students who qualify for the 16-18 Bursary scheme introduced by the government in 2011 (see separate letter sent in the Admissions pack).
Who will this enrichment suit / not suit? Suitable for all (subject to application)
Is there any time commitment over the normal timetabled hour a week? Yes – See above. Final expedition will be in week one of the autumn term of your U6 year.

ROBOTICS – FULL YEAR Course Information: The aim of this enrichment is to give you the chance to explore the fascinating field of
Robotics, combining mechanisms and software control to build useful objects. However, it is not just about the
technical side of things: we need students who can communicate and ‘sell’ an idea to others as well. We take
part in a range of robotics activities and competitions, from those based around Lego NXT kits to purpose built
autonomous machines.
No previous experience is required, but we look for enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard at difficult
problems. The major activity is based around the Student Robotics competition, where teams of sixth form
students build autonomous robots. In October we are told about the new competition and then there Is a 6
month design, build and programming period before the competition itself. This is a fast growing competition,
last year there were 50 teams, this year they are aiming for over 100.
If you join this enrichment you will be expected to put a lot of effort into the activities, particularly in the build season,
from October to April. Several students stay after College and sometimes work at the weekend. If you think that you would like a challenge,
either technical or in marketing and fundraising and would like to work with us, robotics could be for you.

to see their writing published in a real newspaper! For those students who are interested in editing the newspaper,
