Enrich every momentCochlear implants— improve your hearing beyond hearing aids

Experience clearer sound and a lifetime of better hearing

If you are unable to understand what is being said while using powerful hearing aids, a cochlear implant may help. A cochlear implant may not only help you hear better, it can connect you to the life you love by helping you regain access to clearer sound.1

2 3

“ I realized that the only thing hearing aids were doing for me was raising the volume. I was just hearing louder mumbling. It isolated me a little bit… I knew at that point I wanted cochlear implants.”

Nina – Nucleus recipient

Approved qualifications for cochlear implants:

• Adults with moderate to profound hearing loss in one or both ears

• Children 9 to 24 months, with profound hearing loss in both ears

• Children 24 months and older with severe to profound hearing loss in both ears

• Children 5 years and older with severe to profound hearing loss in one ear*

Cochlear implants work differently than hearing aids. Hearing aids help many people with hearing loss by making sounds louder. However, cochlear implants can be a more effective option for those with more significant hearing loss; specifically moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss. By replacing the function of the damaged inner ear, cochlear implants are designed to make sounds louder and clearer.

Selecting the most appropriate hearing technology is critical to your hearing success

4 5

Can a cochlear implant help you?Signs that your hearing aids may not be providing enough benefit:

• Do you struggle to hear conversations and ask people to repeat themselves in a noisy restaurant or even in a quiet room?

• Do you depend on your spouse or lip-reading to understand a conversation?

• Is it hard for you to talk on the phone?

• Do you avoid social activities because you don’t know what’s being said?

• Are you exhausted at the end of the day from trying to communicate?

• Are you having a hard time keeping up at work?

If you answer “yes” to any of the questions above, a cochlear implant may help you access the sounds you are missing. Don’t wait to start living your life to the fullest.

How much does a cochlear implant cost?Unlike hearing aids, hearing implants are covered by Medicare. The results can be life changingHearing your friends and family in noisy situations is especially diffi cult if you have hearing loss. With cochlear implants, you don’t have to miss out on conversations. In fact, the chart on the right shows that adult cochlear implant users demonstrated a signifi cant improvement in hearing in noise when compared to their hearing aid performance.2

Research and decades of experience demonstrate that cochlear implants help improve:

• Speech understanding, sound clarity and language skills3

• Hearing in noise2

• Quality of life2

How a cochlear implant works1 Microphones on the sound processor

pick up sounds and the processor converts them into a digital signal.

2 This signal is transferred to the implant just under the skin.

3 The implant sends the digital sound signal to the electrode array in the cochlea.

4 The hearing nerve picks up the signal and sends it to the brain, which is understood as sound.

Get back the sounds you are missingHearing loss can happen suddenly or over time. However you lost your hearing, you’re reminded every day of what you’re missing—music, conversations with friends, stories and laughter. A cochlear implant has the potential to help you regain access to sounds and give you a more fulfi lling hearing experience.

The chart below is called an audiogram, which shows hearing thresholds at diff erent pitches or frequencies. It shows the frequencies of speech, environmental sounds and how loud the sounds need to be in order for you to hear them.

The sample audiogram to the left indicates sounds you may have access to with a cochlear implant.

• In this example, sounds below the CI line, as indicated with the gray shaded area, can be heard with a cochlear implant.

• The pictures represent sounds at typical volume and frequency levels.

• Consonants and vowels are spoken at frequencies in the spectrum of sound that fall within the yellow highlighted area, also known as the “speech banana.”

How the Cochlear™ Nucleus®

Implant System worksThere are two main components of the Nucleus® System:

• External sound processor—wearing options to fi t your lifestyle and hearing preferences:

– Kanso® 2 Sound Processor (off -the-ear)

– Nucleus 7 Sound Processor (behind-the-ear)

• Internal implant—options of electrode arrays to match your unique hearing needs

The sound processor and internal implant work together to bypass the part of the inner ear (cochlea) that no longer functions properly and deliver digital sound signals directly to your hearing nerve. This helps you hear better in a variety of situations, from conversations in noisy restaurants to leaves rustling in the wind.

Maximize your hearing with both earsHearing with both ears offers a clear advantage, especially when it comes to distinguishing where sound is coming from and understanding speech in noisy environments.5

SCAN technology automatic features

Our advanced technology makes hearing easier—especially in noiseThe Kanso 2 and Nucleus 7 Sound Processors feature dual-microphone technology designed to filter out background noise and optimize your hearing experience. Our sound processors also feature SmartSound iQ* with SCAN, which is designed to replicate natural hearing by capturing sound and automatically adapting to your environment without the need to make manual adjustments.

The Nucleus Sound Processors also feature ForwardFocus,** which is designed to help you hear better in challenging environments. Once enabled by your clinician, simply switch on ForwardFocus through your Smart App† when you want to decrease noise coming from behind you and focus on the face-to-face conversation in front of you.

* SNR-NR, WNR and SCAN are approved for use with any recipient ages 6 years and older, who is able to 1) complete objective speech perception testing in quiet and in noise in order to determine and document performance 2) report a preference for different program settings.

** ForwardFocus can only be enabled by a Hearing Implant Specialist. It should only be activated for users 12 years and older who are able to reliably provide feedback on sound quality and understand how to use the feature when moving to different or changing environments. It may be possible to have decreased speech understanding when using ForwardFocus in a quiet environment.

Every moment mattersWhy wait? We’ve never heard anyone say, “I wish I would have waited.” In fact, the opposite is true. And once you make this life-changing decision, there are just a few steps to get you on your way to hearing your best.

01 Hearing test Visit a Hearing Implant Specialist, an audiologist specializing in implantable hearing technology, including cochlear implants to determine your level of hearing loss and if an implantable hearing solution is right for you. If you are a candidate for a cochlear implant, you will talk with a surgeon about the procedure.

02 Implant procedure This outpatient surgery is usually done under general anesthesia and lasts only a couple of hours. In a few days, most people are back to their normal activities.*

03 Activation day This is the moment you’ve been waiting for. Shortly after your implant procedure, you’ll be ready for your processor to be turned on.

04 Getting the most out of your cochlear implant The results you experience with a cochlear implant can depend on many factors. Your brain will need time to adjust to a new way of hearing. With rehabilitation and patience, you could be hearing better than you ever thought possible. We’ll be there to support you. Our Customer Support Services can help make sure of it.

Don’t wait to take the next step to better hearing
