Meeting Goals
Share The Wallace Foundation’s Principal Pipeline Initiative (PPI) work with state policymakers
interested in addressing overall principal effectiveness.
Discuss the translation of the PPI district-level work into state policy. Topics and key issues include:
o State principal standards requirements;
o State principal preparation and certification policies;
o State evaluation and accountability requirements for principals;
o Budgetary implications for principal pipeline work at the district-level and across a state;
o Technology and data systems necessary to support principal pipeline work;
o Partnerships and collaborations between states, districts, and the higher education
community;
o How the PPI district efforts may or may not work in rural and suburban areas; and
o How to sustain PPI efforts at the individual district-level and consider opportunities for
spreading best practices.

During this opening session, participants will hear an overview
of the agenda and framing of the issues, meet one another, and
have kick-off team conversations. Conversations will focus on
states’ issue areas pertaining to school leadership as well as
considerations for what would be the most helpful takeaways
from the meeting.

9:45 – 10:45 a.m. Principal Pipeline Initiative (PPI) Overview, Impetus for the
Work, and First Year Evaluation Results
Governor’s Hall – Governor Calvert House
Andy Cole will provide an overview of The Wallace
Foundation’s initiative, including the four pipeline components
on which the PPI districts focus their work—leader standards,
high-quality aspiring leader training programs, selective hiring,
and evaluation and on-the-job support. Brenda Turnbull will
discuss early evaluation results of the project as well as next
steps for monitoring the initiative. Participants will have the
opportunity, after each speaker, to ask questions and apply
discussion topics to their own state.

Charlotte Mecklenburg’s overall Principal Pipeline
Initiative (PPI) project;
Tools and processes for pre-service recruitment,
selection, and training, including creating relationships
between districts and IHEs;
Strategies for developing and implementing a system of
evaluation and coaching support for school principals;
Examples of how the district and state interact as well as
the role of state policy and support; and
Opportunities for how district-level work can inform
state policy and for how state policy can support or
impede district-level efforts.
There will be opportunity during this deep-dive session for
participant Q &A as well as team discussion.

Participants will view the short video, Leadership Matters: A
Call to Action and engage in a team discussion about several of
the issues raised in the video. Leadership Matters: A Call to
Action is part of a documentary film project on school principals
and features commentary by ten education and policy experts.
The video is part of a longer documentary focused on school
principals that was commissioned by The Wallace Foundation.

Atrium
Participants will enjoy a reception and have the opportunity to
participate in several content-themed roundtables. Discussion
may include follow-up questions from the day’s presentations
and/or other exchanges of ideas. Tables will concentrate on the
following four topics:
Principal training;
Evaluation of and by principals;
Common Core State Standards (CCSS) instruction and
principal support; and
Establishing a vision and mission for effective school
leadership.

National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), and National
Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) will discuss:
recent trends in state policy related to school leadership, the role
of state policy organizations in supporting efforts around school
leadership, and considerations for the collaboration between
states and districts on policy reform.
