1. Tell the difference between common nouns and proper nouns
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
1. Orally identify at least 5 common nouns and 5 proper nouns.
2. Arrange common nouns and proper nouns according to category correctly.
3. Underline and circle the correct common and proper nouns in the worksheet
given.

Set Induction
(3 minutes)
1. Teacher puts up some pictures.
2. Pupils identify the names of the items
in the picture.
“Look at these pictures.”
“Can you tell me what they
are?”

Presentation
(15 minutes)
1. Teacher introduces the topic for the
day.
2. Teacher pastes a piece of manila card.
3. Teacher gives short explanation of
what common and proper nouns are.
4. Pupils are shown examples of common
and proper nouns through the use of
flashcards.
5. Teacher explains how common nouns
are different from proper nouns.
6. Pupils take turns to try and arrange
flashcards according to common nouns
and proper nouns.
“Today we are going to learn
about Common Nouns and
Proper Nouns.”
Teacher writes title on board.
Common noun: Names any
thing, place or person
e.g. boy, girl, mosque, pen,
pencil, bananas, cat
Proper noun: names a specific
person, place or thing. The first
letter must always be
capitalised.
e.g. Malacca, Aisyah, Si

Practice
(20 minutes)
1. Pupils gather in groups of five (6
groups)
2. Each group is given one envelope with
a number of flashcards.
3. Pupils must arrange all the nouns
provided in the envelope according to
the two categories of nouns.
4. The flashcards must be pasted on the
manila card provided using tack-it.
5. Pupils are given 12 minutes to
complete the task.
6. After the task is done, the manila cards
will be pasted in front of the class for
everyone to see.
7. Teacher and pupils check to see if the
answers are correct.
“Class, please make six groups,
five members in a group.”
“Each group will get 1
envelope, 1 manila card and
some tack-it.”
Teacher gives instruction.
“You must arrange all the
common nouns together and
the proper nouns together.”
Teacher shows example.
“Paste the answers in the table
provided in the manila card.”
“You have 12 minutes to finish
this task.”
“When you have finished,
paste your manila card on the
board.”

1. Each pupil is given a worksheet to
work on.
2. Pupils read the instructions together,
repeating after teacher. They must find
the common nouns and proper nouns
in the sentences provided.

person one worksheet.”

and circle the proper nouns.”

4. If they can finish the task quickly, they
will be given a second worksheet to
work on. Here, they must find the
proper nouns and capitalise the first

have learnt today.
2. Teacher gives some words and pupils
must state what type of noun they are.
