Healing the World

Dawn spreads her early morning glow,

Cheerily she peeps through the window.

Sasha opens his sleepy eyes and smiles,

Sunday mornings bring in their wake,

Sasha’s work! To give more than take,

Off to the old people’s home he goes,

Over his shoulder, an empty sack he throws.

Many an hour in their company he spends,

Sad, broken hearts he carefully mends,

Their worries he fills in that empty sack,

Joy to them he gives, and promises to be back.

A precious jewel is Sasha’s kind,

Loving and caring always in his mind,

The world would be a better place,

If Sasha’s work we could all duplicate!

11. Read the excerpt from Bhiku’s autobiography and answer the questions.

12

I had been appointed the station master of Pilakua few months back. However, I was not too happy with my job. Hardly any trains stopped at Pilakua because only very few people would get on or off. I always dreamt of leaving this job and joining the army.

On a quiet Sunday afternoon of 19 March 2017, as I finished my lunch, a frightening sight met my eyes. A little boy had wandered off the platform. He was walking on the railway tracks and did not see the fast-approaching train. I panicked. I leapt on to the tracks and ran. Somehow, I managed to rescue the boy just before the engine could touch him.

“Where are his parents?” I wondered. I held the boy’s hand and took him to the station room. The phone was ringing. “A 5-year-old boy got off the train at Pilakua. Find him, Station Master Bhiku!” a voice spoke in panic.

“He is here with me, sir. I just saved him from an accident!”

“How will I ever repay you, Bhiku? My son got off the train and I didn’t even notice. You are a true hero,” the Railway Commissioner sobbed.

“I did my duty, sir, as the Station Master of Pilakua!” I replied with a deep sense of satisfaction.

“Pilakua will not need a new station master,” I thought that night.
