【由来と意味】

近江出身の武将、石田三成の旗印である、「大

一、大万、大吉」は「万人が一人のために、一

人が万人のために尽くせば、太平の世が訪れ

る」という意味です。

英語にもよく似た言葉があります。

近江（現在の滋賀県）に本店を置き、江戸か

ら明治にかけて、日本各地で活躍かつやく

した近江商人

は、「三方よし」の精神を大切にしていました。

２ 英語でことわざ 英語と日本語、よく似たことわざがあります。

Birds of a feather flock together.

類は友を呼ぶ ⇒直訳すると、「同じ羽毛の鳥は、いっしょに集まる」という意味

です。

A friend in need is a friend indeed. まさかの友こそ真の友

⇒困ったときに助けてくれる人が、本当の 友だちという意味のことわざです。

Two heads are better than one.

三人よれば、もんじゅの 知恵ち え

⇒日本語は三人ですが、英語では「一人より二人」という意味です。

３ 英語で早口言葉 動物が登場する英語の早口言葉です。早口言葉を言うのは少し難

しいですね。初めはゆっくり練習して、とにかく楽しもう！

２ 物語を読もう ① Wiping Out the Giant Centipede

in Mt. Mikami.

Once upon a time, a strong man lived in Omi. His name is Tawarano Tota.

A giant snake was on the Seta bridge. It was dangerous. People couldn’t walk across the bridge. But Tota was storng. He stepped on the snake, and he walked across the bridge.

In the evening, a beautiful lady visited Tota. “What’s the matter?” Tota said. “I would like you to help me. I am a dragon. I live under the bridge. I fear the giant centipede. It can wind around Mt. Mikami seven and a half times. My family and I were attacked by the centipede. I changed into a giant snake. And I have been waiting for a strong brave man like you.” “OK. I’ll beat him.” Tota said.

That night, Tota went to the Seta bridge with a sword, a bow and arrows. It thundered and the lighting flashed on Mt. Mikami. The storm was getting worse and worse. He had three arrows. He loosed the first arrow. The centipede didn’t move at all. And then he tried it again, but no dice. The next one was the last arrow. The arrow hit the centipede’s throat. At last the centipede died. At that time the storm stopped. The next morning, the lady visited Tota again. She said, “Thank you very much. I’ll give you these things.” She gave him a roll of silk cloth, a straw bag and a pan. Tota made his clothes from the roll of silk cloth. But he didn’t use it all up. He could get rice all he wanted from the straw bag. He could get anything he wanted from the pan. He lived happily ever after.

② The Sparrow’s Tongue ～ 舌切りスズメ ～

Once upon a time, an old man and an old woman lived in the west of Omi. The Old man had sparrows. And he loved them very much. The old woman had a cat. She loved it very much.

One day, the man went to the mountain. And the woman prepared the rice paste for washing clothes. The cat ate the rice paste. But the cat blamed it on one of the sparrows. “Don’t eat that!” said the woman to the sparrow. The sparrow said, “I didn’t do that. The cat did it.” But the woman didn’t trust the sparrow. “You’re lying!” She cut the sparrow’s tongue. The sparrow flew to the mountain.

誰もがよく知っている日本の代表的な昔話です。おじいさんがスズメの

お宿を探しに行くとき、いろいろ汚いモノを飲まされます。「舌切りスズ

メ」は、この部分に地域の特色があります。多くの試練をくぐり抜けても

スズメに会いに行きたいおじいさんの愛情と、おばあさんの欲深さが対照

的です。この物語のスズメのお宿は滋賀県の湖西地方です。安曇川あ ど が わ

流域に

は竹やぶが多く、竹を利用した 扇おおぎ

）は全国的にも有名です。

After a while, the man came back home and heard the story. He went out to find the sparrow.

He met a farmer. He asked the farmer. “Do you know the tongue-cut sparrow?” The farmer answered, “If you drink a cup of this manure, I’ll tell you.” The man drank it. The farmer said, “There is a bamboo forest on the outskirts of this village. Ask there, and you can find the bamboo forest.”

The man went there. He met an old man and asked him. The old man answered, “If you eat this bamboo, I’ll tell you.” The man ate it. The old man said, “It is not here. It is over there. There is a bigger bamboo forest. Go straight.”

The man arrived at the big bamboo forest. But he couldn’t find the sparrow. He met a woman washing rice. He asked her. The woman answered, “If you drink this dirty water, I’ll tell you.” The man drank the dirty water. The next morning the sparrow said to him, "These are our presents for you. Which would you like, a big box or a small box?" "I don’t want either of them. But if you give me one, I will take the small one."

He went home and opened it. There was a lot of money, gold, silver and more in it. The old woman asked him, "Why didn't you take the big one? I'll go and get it.”

The woman went to the Sparrow’s house. She got the big box. On her way home, she wanted to see inside the box. She

opened the box. To her surprise, snakes, ghosts, centipedes and other dreadful things came out one after another from the box.
