Traffic Rules
- In Japan, cars, motorcycles, and bicycles travel on the left side, and pedestrians walk on theright.
-Driving after having any amount of alcohol or driving without a license will result in a heavy
punishment.
-Driving while using mobile phones is prohibited.
-Enroll in car insurance or bicycle insurance.
Pedestrian
-Walk on the sidewalk.
-Walk on the right-hand side of the road if there is no sidewalk.
-Obey all traffic lights when crossing the street.
-Use pedestrian crossings if there arent any traffic lights.
Bicycle
-In principle, travel on the left side of the road.
-When traveling on the sidewalk, yield to pedestrians and move to the side by the road.-Drinking alcohol,riding with two people, and using un umbrella are prohibited while riding a
bicycle.
-Turn on a bike light at night.
-Obey all traffic lights at intersections and confirm its safe to cross.
-Children under 13 must wear a helmet.

IC Card Manaca
-You can ride just by touching your card to the wicket or bus fare box.-Five kinds available: 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000. (Sale prices include 500
deposit. Usage amount is deducted 500 from the ticket price.)
-A single Manaca can be loaded and used as many times as desired.
-Earn mileage points as you ride. Mileage Points can be used to pay for city bus and subway
fares.
-Connecting such as from city bus to city bus, or city bus to subway within 90 minutes grants a
discount of 80 for adults (40 for children).
-Use Manaca for the Aonami Line, Yutorito Line, Meitetsu Trains and Buses, and Toyohashi
Railway network.
-Use your Manaca to pay at stores and vending machines with the mark on the right.
-Use for payment at all railways, buses, and shops in Japan that have the mark .

Be Prepared for Disasters
-Have a family disaster prevention meeting to determine Earthquake Safe Areas as well as ameans of contacting your family (such as the Disaster Emergency Message Dial 171 system or
the Disaster Message Board service).
-Prepare emergency supplies (food, drinking water, valuables, clothes, medical supplies, radio,
flashlights and all other necessary items.)
-Implement anti-falling preventative measures, such as securing furniture to walls with metal
fittings.
-Check the locations of Safety Evacuation Areas and evacuation routes in a hazard
map.
*Shelters are places to evacuate when houses are collapsed or damage could be
expected (elementary schools, junior-high schools etc.)
*Safety Evacuation Areas are places where residents evacuate in the event
significant fires occur due to a major earthquake (large-scale parks, etc.)
*You can get a hazard map at a ward office or download from the official website of
Nagoya.
-Get a Survival Manual
-Disaster information is announced on the official websites of Nagoya City and Nagoya
International Center.

Earthquake
Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. Be prepared for the event of an
earthquake in order not to panic.
Scale of earthquake
In the event of a major earthquake:
A violent tremor will last for around the first minute.
-Hide yourself under a steady table or desk.
-Turn off heaters and stove burners.
-Open the door to escape.
-Do not rush outside.
-Gather information via radio or TV.
Tsunamis
After an earthquake occurs, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issues a tsunami advisory
or warning if tsunamis are expected. At the same time when JMA issues tsunami warning (for
tsunamis and major tsunamis) for the Ise Bay and Mikawa Bay, Nagoya City issues an Evacuation
Advisory for those evacuation designated areas () telling you to run to higher ground. The
Evacuation Advisory will be announced by sirens, PR vehicles, etc.
Evacuation designated areas: part of Minato-ku for tsunami warnings, Mizuho-ku, Atsuta-ku,
Nakagawa-ku, Minato-ku, Minami-ku, Midori-ku for massive tsunami warnings.
Tsunami Evacuation Building
If an earthquake occurs and a Major Tsunami Warning has been issued for the
Ise/Mikawa Bays, these buildings serve as temporary evacuation places.
The indication shown on the right is attached at the entrance of each of these buildings.
Designated areas: Mizuho-ku, Atsuta-ku, Nakagawa-ku, Minato-ku, Minami-ku and, Midori-ku
Impossible to stand. Wooden buildings fall down.
Difficult to walk without crawling.
Dishes in a cupboard and books fall. Possiblity furniture falls.

Be Prepared for Tyhoon and Flood Damage
Typhoons and downpours tend to concentrate from June to October. Local and torrential
downpours may also occur. Turn on a TV or radio to get weather forecasts and disaster
information.

evacuation to the upper floor of a building, shelter, or safety area.

-An announcement ordering evacuation, as the risk of harm has become
imminent and the risk of one's life has increased.
-When an Evacuation Order is issued, evacuate to the evacuation destination
with the least risk. When evacuating, put out fires and lock up your home. Bring
bare essentials of items, emergency food for three days, and drinking waterwith you.
