Everybody loves a wedding, but people celebrate weddings in a thousand different ways. In the
Philippines, the bride and her assistants must all wear the same dresses. They do this to stop bad spirits
from finding the bride and carrying her away. The groom in Spain gives his bride her wedding ring and
then a little money in order to show that he will work hard for everything they need. In many countries,
the bride and groom both hold the knife in order to cut the wedding cake together. This shows that they
will be a good team. In Scotland, people only eat half of the cake at the wedding. They keep the other to

READING
Our ancestors got their family names from the names of their hometowns. For example, Al Halabi shows
that this family was from Halab in Syria, and Haifawi shows that this family was from Haifa in Palestine.
Also, the name of the family may come from people's jobs as Al-Najjar, Al-Haddad and Al-Ostaz families.
Parents also choose their children's given names in different ways. They often hope their children will be
like their names. For example, if Arab parents call their daughter Nour, they hope she'll bring light into
their life and make them happy. And when they call their son Khalid, they want him to be strong and brave
as the Muslim leader Khalid Bin Al-Waleed.

READING
1) Read the following paragraph and match items in (A) with those in (B) below.
Thirteen centuries ago, in Spain, East and West met for almost 800 years. This happened when the
Muslims arrived there in 711. There was a real contact between cultures. They took the country over very
quickly, and they completely changed the land that they called Al-Andalus. With new crops and better
ways of farming, Al-Andalus soon grew rich. The Muslims needed a capital, and they set it up in Cordoba.
Here, they built beautiful mosques and palaces, and the city became as important as Baghdad. Al-Andalus
became a centre of the Islamic World and the centre of civilisation in Europe. Its science, medicine,
architecture, arts and crafts became famous. Here, Al-Khatib found out how people pass diseases on. Here,
Al-Zahrawi worked out many new medical operations. Students in both East and West studied the work
of people like these for centuries, and we still remember them today. Spain is now a busy, modern country.
But walk the narrow streets of old Cordoba and visit Granada’s amazing Alhambra Palace and gardens,
and you will find a different Spain. Here, ancient Al-Andalus still lives.

1. set up a capital ( ) science, medicine, architecture and arts
2. introduced better ways of farming ( ) Cordoba
3. developed important areas of study ( ) new crops
