No further IELTS tests required

7 English levels starting from Pre-Intermediate; each level 5 weeks

9 commencement dates throughout year

20 + hours per week – 20 compulsory + 8 optional additional support in Learning Centre

Two campus locations – Hobart/Launceston – students study on same campus as degree course

95% success rate (July2014 – July2015 data)

Assessment of commencing English ability needed to determine length of study

Assessed by scores on recognised external tests (IELTS,TOEFL iBT, PTE) or by a Placement Test (Password ) on arrival or offshore via approved agents

Successful completion of Level 6

Entry to: UG courses IELTS 6.0 with all bands 5.5 only

*Successful completion of Level 7

Entry to: all other courses IELTS 6.0 or higher with all required band scores

*Successful completion = achieving IELTS-equivalent scores required to satisfy degree admissions conditions as shown on Offer Letter: e.g. IELTS 7.0 with no band less than 6.5 = 70% with at least 65% in each skill

English Language CoursesCurriculum Structured curriculum over 7 levels with clearly identified outcomes

Aims to build language ability and confidence by focusing on high value skills for success, including:

Critical thinking Use of academic conventions Constructing essays/reports and retrieving and citing relevant sources Managing a university workload Preparing and presenting research assignments Familiarity with and practice in using university-wide e-learning

English Language CoursesAssessmentStudents are assessed on their academic language, research and study skills across the following areas:

Academic writing Academic speaking Listening/note-taking Reading strategies and comprehension Use of English

Progression through Levels 1-5 is based on an overall score of 60% or higher with a minimum of 50% in each skill area. In Level 6, overall 60%, minimum 55% in each skill is required to progress.

Guiding students to achieve their goals is at the heart of what we do

Methodology includes; lectures, small group classes, individual/pair/ team activities, personalised feedback and support, familiarity of and practice with the university’s e-learning platforms

Our expectation is that all students are able to use a computer and

will come with their own.

Foundation StudiesKey Features

A nationally recognised course designed to equip international students with the skills and capabilities to seek entry into UG courses

Taught over 2 semesters commencing February (22 February 2016)

Two streams offered in 2016 – Science, Health & Engineering and Business & Arts

Taught by staff with qualifications in specialist academic areas, most also teach across Foundation and degree courses

Foundation StudiesEntry Requirements

English: IELTS 5.5 (no bands below 5.0) or equivalent (eg UTASAccess Level 4; TOEFL 46 (no score below 10)

Academic: see website for different countries –minimum is completion of equivalent Year 11

Age: a minimum of 17 years at commencement of Foundation. Under 17s considered on a case by case basis and with regard to any age restrictions for commencement of UG courses

Foundation StudiesStructureAll students study a total of 5 subjects including:

2 compulsory units: English for Tertiary Studies and Critical Thinking

Choice of 3 electives: Maths Chemistry Physics Biology Psychology Information Management & Creative Design Business Legal Studies

Foundation StudiesAssessment

Students complete semester 1 and semester 2 exams and both sets of results contribute to a final GPA.

Assignments Group activities Presentations Tests

Students receive a final GPA calculated to a score out of 7 (students need to meet the GPA score required by their faculty)

Students must pass English for Tertiary Studies (with minimum 60%)

Support Services English Language and Foundation students have access to all services

and support available to every university student

In addition, the English Language Centre provides:

A Learning Centre equipped with a range of materials, resources and technology and staffed by our own teachers

Procedures for early identification of students experiencing academic or personal difficulties with a range of intervention strategies available and monitored

A Student Enquiries Desk where information, advice and a range of services are provided by staff trained in the particular needs of English Language and Foundation students

A targeted orientation including course and visa requirements

Study Tours & Group Programs The English Language Centre has a dedicated section catering for short

courses such as Study Tours and Group Programs

Customised programs are delivered to suit the specific needs of groups of international learners aged 18 years and above

Programs vary in size and duration and can be tailored to include English development and practice as well as specific professional, career or special-interest needs
