The Love ConnectionCharacter Lines Conclusions

Romeo

1.1.195-199

"This love that thou hast shown / Doth add more grief to too much of mine own. / Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs; / Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes; / Being vexed, a sea nourished with loving tears."

Love can be confusing. Love is changing; like smoke, love can blind your judgment; love can be wonderful but it can also be heartbreaking.

Benvolio

1.1.235-236

1.2.47-48

"By giving liberty unto thine eyes. / Examine other beauties."

"Tut, man, one fire burns out another's burning; One pain is lessened by another's anguish.?

Benvolio thinks that Romeo can find love with other girls. Benvolio wants his eyes to be free because there are plenty of girls out there. Benvolio doesn't let himself get too emotionally involved or attached.

Capulet

1.2.13

1.2.16-17

"And too soon marred are those so early made."

"But woo her; gentle Paris, get her heart; / My will to consent is but a part."

In order for a marriage/love to be successful, two lovers must be mature and get to know each other first. A marriage must be based on love.

Juliet

1.3.71

1.3.103-105

"It is an honor I dream not of."

"I'll look to like, if looking liking move. / But no more deep will I endart mine eye / Than your consent gives strength to make it fly."

Juliet appreciates the offer of marriage but she is not interested in getting married. Juliet sees the idea of getting married as a force or obligation, not lifelong happiness.

Lady Capulet believes it's time for Juliet to be married. Girls should marry when they are young.

Nurse

1.3.101

"No less? Nay, bigger. Women grow by men."

Men help girls become women. The nurse sees marriage as a way for fame and fortune.

"This love that thou hast shown / Doth add more grief to too much of mine own. / Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs; / Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes; / Being vexed, a sea nourished with loving tears."

Romeo compares love to smoke - it blurs your vision and hurts your eyes. Love is ever-changing and confusing. Love can be beautiful but also hurtful.

Benvolio

1.1.235-236

1.2.47-48

"By giving liberty unto thine eyes. / Examine other beauties."

"Tut, man, one fire burns out another's burning; One pain is lessened by another's anguish.?

Benvolio believes there are plenty of fish in the sea. Benvolio is not looking for true love; he wants lust.

When someone hurts you, hurt them back: revenge. Benvolio does not let his emotions show.

Page 14: English Langua ge Arts - 001...3. Complete Romeo and Juliet 1.4 Study Guide (Answer "After Reading" Questions in Journal) 2. Read Act I, scene 4 of Romeo and Juliet (pgs. 41-49) 4

Capulet

1.2.13

1.2.16-17

"And too soon marred are those so early made."

"But woo her; gentle Paris, get her heart; / My will to consent is but a part."

An early marriage fails because the lovers are immature and not well-enough acquainted. Rushing into marriage is not a good idea.

Lord Capulet believes that true love must be the key ingredient for a successful marriage.

Juliet

1.3.71

1.3.103-105

"It is an honor I dream not of."

"I'll look to like, if looking liking move. / But no more deep will I endart mine eye / Than your consent gives strength to make it fly."

Juliet does not care for the idea of marriage. She's not looking for love/marriage. Juliet views marriage as an obligation, something to be done out of respect for her parents.

1.3.75-79

"We'll think of marriage now. Younger than you / Here in Verona, ladies of esteem, / Are made already mothers. By my count / I was your mother much upon these years / That you are now a maid."

It is best for young girls to marry while they are still young. Girls are meant to be married young.

Nurse

1.3.101

"No less? Nay, bigger. Women grow by men."

Women can take advantage of men by using men to grow in status, wealth, and popularity. Marriage is not all about love.
