Whai is Idiom ?

Idiom is a phrase where the words together have a meaning that is different from the dictionaray definitions of the

individual words

Common Idioms

Some Idioms used by most people that speak English; others are used by a more select group.

Common Idioms that refer to people include

- A chip on your shoulder

means you think you know a lot

- High as a kite

means you ae drunk or on drugs

- Sick as a dog

means you are very ill

Idioms that refer to your actions would be :

- Rub someone the wrong way

means to annoy or bother

- Jump the gun

means to be doing something early

- Pay the piper

means you need to face the consequences of your actions

Some Idioms use color words to convey other meanings. For example,there are several that use the word “ blue “

- “The blues” can refer to both a style of music and feeling sad

- If something occurs rarely, it is said to happen “once in a blue

moon” ,because a blue moon is two full moons in one month,

which doesn’t happen often

- “Out ofthe blue” means something happen that was unexpected

Indonesian Idioms

Idiom adalah kelompok kata yang dirangkai dengansusunan tertentu dimana arti idiom tidak dapat dari arti kata-kata penyusunnya secara terpisah.

1. Berdasarkan bentuknya idiom terdapat dua macam idiom sebagai

berikut :

a. Ungkapan Penuh

yaitu ungkapan yang maknanya tidak terekam atau tidak

tergambar dari unsur-unsur pembentukannya.

contoh :

menjual gigi = tertawa keras-keras

b. Ungkapan Sebagian

yaitu ungkapan yang maknanya masih tergambar pada salah

satu unsur pembentukannya.

contoh :

harga mati = harga yang tidak bisa ditawar-tawar lagi

2. Berdasarkan kata yang membentuknya dapat dibagi menjadi

berikut :

a. Idiom dengan bagian tubuh

contoh :

Lapang hati = Sabar

Mendarah daging = Sudah menjadi kebiasaan

Kepala batu = Tidak mau patuh pada perintah

b. Idiom dengan kata indra

contoh :

Muka manis = Menarik hati

Kurus kering = Kurus sekali

Example

Do up = Perbaiki

Sit down and do up your task!

(Duduk dan perbaiki tugasmu!)

Except for = Seandainya tidak ada

Fifi will marry next year except for the obstacle

(Fifi akan menikah tahun depanseandainya tidak ada rintangan)

Fall out love with = Berhenti mencintai

Parents will never stop to fall out love with their son

(Orangtua tidak akan pernah berhenti mencintai anaknya)
