Textbook of English for Grade - 5
OUR MOTTO
Standards Outcomes Access Style
ENGLISH GRADE - 5 is developed according to the National Curriculum 2006 and
National Style Guide. It is being published since 2014 and in 2015 it was presented under
the new management and supervision of textbook development principles and
guidelines with new designing and layout.
English as an international language is the need of the hour for establishing an
equal opportunity for all. The scope of the book has been enriched with the student
learning outcomes which covers a wide range of reading and comprehension to
meaningful interaction in a foreign language with adequate focus on listening and
speaking in specific cultural environment leading to values.
Learning a language is one of the most absorbing activities which strengthen the
intricacies of mind. With one or two languages already acquired, a child reaches to a
realm of knowledge where most of the language learning strategies get transferred
automatically. Even though, the linguistic demands of every language are different, still
the intellect devises, norms for interpreting meaning are essential component of
learning a language. The book inspires students to inculcate language-based concepts,
skills and attitudes to develop key elements of personality like confidence, curiosity, self-
control, cooperation and communication.
English Grade - 5 aims to bring themes and topics closer to the interests of the
children. The activities are also intended to encourage them towards taking the
responsibility of their own learning. The Proofing efforts of Mr. Ashraf Ali Chaudhary are
also recognised here.
This book is now presented in a new way so that English should become a vital
subject.
Our efforts are to make textbooks teachable with quality, i.e. maintaining of
standards. It is a continuous effort and we will get feedback of the yearly feasibility
reports and redesign the textbook every year.
PREFACEPREFACE
Like before, the National Book Foundation has made specific endeavours to
publish the text and illustrations in much effective form. The meticulous effort of the
team is acknowledged.
Quality of Standards, Pedagogical Outcomes, Taxonomy Access and
Actualization of Style is our motto.
With these elaborations, this series of new development was presented for
use. After educational feedback, research and review it is now published again.

FLAG OF PAKISTAN
Every nation needs a flag as a
symbol of its existence. Our country,
Pakistan has also got a flag having white stripe at the mast and
dark green centre with white crescent and five-rayed star.
Crescent, star and green colour are traditional symbols of Islam
and therefore, the flag truly depicts the existence of Pakistan.
Our beloved flag is rectangular in the proportion of length
and width with a ratio of 3:2. The white vertical bar at the mast is
one quarter the size of the flag and the green portion occupies the
remaining three quarters. The crescent and star are
placed at the centre of the green portion.

The colours selected for the flag are also symbolic. The
dark green colour represents majority of Muslim community and
the one-fourth white stripe at the mast depicts religious
minorities in the country. A unique anthem is created to enhance
the glory of the flag. Its music was composed by Ahmad G.
Chagla and the lyrics were written by Hafeez Jalandhri. Another
feature of the National Anthem is that no verse in its three
stanzas is repeated. We are proud of our National Anthem.
The design of Pakistan’s flag was
presented by Liaqat Ali Khan. It was officially
adopted by the assembly in July 1947. The flags
flew higher on August 14, 1947 on all buildings.
People of Pakistan were jubilant to have a
symbol of independence to celebrate.
It is essential for every Pakistani to show
respect to the flag by keeping it high and flying.
Whenever the National Anthem is played, we must
show respect by standing still and singing in a melodious voice. The best way to
keep our flag high is to work for peace and prosperity of our country.
A-1: Read the text for information and answer these questions:
I. What is the proportion of length and width of the flag?
II. Who presented the flag in the Constituent Assembly?
