WARningIfyouareinstallingtheZodiacAquaPureEiSeriesAPURE35CtoaGoldline®adaptor,itisnecessarytodisconnectthepowertotheGoldlinecontroller.Zodiacrecommendsthatanyprocedurerequiringpotentialcontactwithliveelectricalwiringand/orpartsotherthancordsandplugsconnectedtoelectricaloutlets,becompletedbyacontractorwhoislicensedandqualifiedinpoolequipmentasdescribedonthefrontcoverofthismanual.Failuretofollowwarningnoticesandinstructionsmayresultinpropertydamage,seriousinjury,ordeath.

2. Screwthepowerpackbracketintopositiononawallsurfacewhereitwillmountsecurely,whileensuringitisnomorethan4.6m(15ft.)fromthecell(seeFigure4).

3. Positionthepowerpackinplacebyaligningthebracketwiththecorrespondingthru-holes(seeFigure4).

4. WirethepowerpacktotheLOADsideofthepumportheLOADsideofthepoolpumptimerrelaysothatthechlorinatorcanonlycomeonwhenthepoolpumpcomeson(seeSection3.4).Attachthebondingwireandconnectittoacommonbondingpoint(seeSection3.5).Ifavailable,wirethepowerpacktoanAquaLink®RSControlSystemorPDA(seeSection3.6).

5. Unscrewthelockingringfromthecellinordertoextractitfromtheupperclamp(seeFigure5).

3.6.1 Verify the Controller Type on the Power Pack is set Correctly

BeforewiringtoanAquaLinkRSControlSystem,thecontrollertypemustbesettoJANDYL/MtoallowcommunicationbetweenthepowerpackandtheAquaLinkRSControlSystem.ThedefaultcontrollersettingonthepowerpackisJANDYL/M.Followtheinstructionsbelowtoverifythecontrollertypeissetcorrectly.

nOTE ThecontrollertypemustbesetcorrectlybeforemakingthewiringconnectionbetweenthepowerpackandtheAquaLink,otherwisethepowerpackmaybelockedoutoftheAquaLink.

Toverifythecontrollertypeissetcorrectly:

1. Applypowertothepowerpack.

2. Waitforthestart-upsequencetocomplete.

4.3 Chemistry You need to Know

• Chlorine Stabilizer(cyanuricacid)isneededtomaintainproperlevelsofchlorine.Mostnon-stabilizedchlorineisdestroyedbytheUVradiationfromthesunwithintwo(2)hours.Chlorinestabilizershouldbemaintainedbetween10-50ppm.Forindoorpools,itisnotnecessarytoaddchlorinestabilizertotheswimmingpoolwater.

• Nitratescancauseextremelyhighchlorinedemandsandwilldepletechlorinefromyourswimmingpool.Insomecasesnitratesmayevenloweryourchlorinelevelstozero.Yourlocalpoolprofessionalcantestfornitrates.Makesurenitratesarenotpresentinyourpool.

• Metals(somemetals)cancauselossofchlorineandstainyourpool.Haveyourlocalpoolprofessionalcheckformetalsandrecommendmethodsofremoval.

• Chloraminesshouldnotbepresentinpoolwater.Whenorganicmaterialscombinewithfreechlorine,chloraminesareformed.Thistiesupthefreechlorineinyourpoolanddoesnotallowthechlorineinyourpooltodisinfect.Chloraminesalsocloudpoolwaterandburntheeyes.Shocktoremovechloraminesattheinitialstartupofthepool.

• Super Chlorinationburnsouttheorganicmaterialthathascombinedwithchlorinewhichfreesthechlorineforsanitizing.SuperChlorinationisaccomplishedbyraisingthechlorinelevelquicklyanddramatically.TosuperchlorinatethepoolusingtheZodiacAquaPureEiSeriesAPURE35Cchlorinegeneratingdevice,setthechlorineproductionto100%andthensetthepumpandthecelltorunfor24hours.

• Shocking (Superoxidation)isalsoameansofburningouttheorganicmaterialthathascombinedwithchlorine.Thismethodinvolvesthemanualadditionofchemicals(usearegisteredorscheduledsourceofsodiumdichlor,calciumhypochlorite,liquidchlorineortrichlor)toquicklyraisethelevelofchlorine.Whenthechlorinelevelisquicklyraisedto5-15ppmthepoolwaterissaidtohavebeenshocked.

nOTE Oninitialstartupofapool,itisbesttoshockusingeitherashocktreatmentoraregisteredorscheduledsourceofsodiumdichlor,calciumhypochlorite,liquidchlorineortrichloravailableatyourlocalpoolsupplier.

CAuTiOnNeverusedryacidtoadjustpHinaridgeographicareaswithexcessiveevaporationandminimaldilutionofpoolwaterwithfreshwater.Abuildupofby-productscandamagetheelectrolyticcell.

• The pH Conditionresultingfromtheoperationofasaltwaterchlorinationsystemisclosetoneutral.However,otherfactorsusuallycausethepHofthepoolwatertorise.Therefore,thepHinapoolchlorinatedbyasaltwatersystemtendstostabilizeatapproximately7.6.IfthepoolpHrisesabove7.6haveapoolprofessionaltesttoseeifotherfactorssuchashighcalciumhardnessortotalalkalinityarethecauseandthenbalanceaccordingly.

• Total Dissolved Solids(TDS).AddingsalttopoolwaterwillraisetheTDSlevel.Whilethisdoesnotadverselyaffectthepoolwaterchemistryorclarity,thepoolwaterprofessionaltestingforTDSmustbemadeawaresalthasbeenaddedforthesanitizingsystem.TheindividualperformingtheTDStestwillthensubtractthesalinityleveltoarriveatthecorrectTDSlevel.

• New pool waterinarecentlyfilledornewlyrefinishedpoolmaycontainundesirablematterwhichcouldinterferewiththesaltwaterchlorinator’sabilitytosanitizeproperly.Makesurethewateristestedbyapoolprofessionalandproperlybalancedbeforeturningonthechlorinatorsystem.Newplasterpoolshaveaconstantaciddemandforsix(6)months.TestoftenandmaintainaproperpHtoavoidexcessscalingofthecell.

• Sequestering Agentscanbeusedtocompensateforsourcewaterwhichmayhaveunusuallyhighcalciumhardness.Highcalciumhardnesscancontributetoscaleformationinthepool.


Sequesteringagentswillhelpkeepmineralsinsolutionandundersomeconditionscanpreventscalingfromhappening.Consultyourpoolprofessionalabouttheuseofasequesteringagent.

4.4 Optimum Pool Water Conditions InaccordancewithAssociationofPoolandSpaProfessionals(APSP)standards,werecommendthefollowingwaterbalanceconditionsbemaintainedonanon-goingbasistoprotectthepoolfinishandtheequipmentandtoensurethepleasingappearanceofthewater.TheZodiacAquaPureEiSeriesAPURE35Ciswarrantedtooperateproperlyonlyifthefollowingconditionsaremet:

Free Available Chlorine 1.0-3.0ppmpH 7.2-7.6Total Alkalinity 100-120ppmCalcium Hardness 200-300ppmSalt 4,000-4,500ppmCyanuric Acid (for outdoor pools only)

4.5 Chlorine Testing Ifadditionalchlorineisrequiredduetoheavybatherloads,usesodiumdichlor,calciumhypochlorite,liquidchlorineortrichlortomaintainanappropriatechlorine/bromineresidualinthewater.Useahometestkitoraskyourpoolprofessionaltotestyourwater.Checktheexpirydateofthetestkitastestresultsmaybeinaccurateifusedafterthatdate.Itisrecommendedthatchlorinetestsamplesbetakenfromtwo(2)places,describedbelow.Comparethetwo(2)samples.Ahigherlevelshouldbefoundatthepoolreturnline.Thehigherlevelatthepoolreturnlineindicatesthesaltwaterchlorinatorsystemisproducingchlorine.

4.6 Salt(NaClSodiumChloride)4.6.1 When to Add saltAddsalttothepoolifthesaltistoolow(seeTable1)orifsaltindicatorlightturnson.Foranewpoolornewlyresurfacedpoolitisrecommendedtowaitatleast30days(surfaceshouldbecompletelycured)beforeaddingsalt.Donotrunthechlorinatoratthistime.

Manuallychlorinatethepool.Contactyourdealerforrecommendations.Followthepoolsurfacemanufacturer’sguidelinesforyourparticularpool.Forvinylandfiberglasspools,saltcanbeaddedatstartup.

4.6.2 What Type of salt to use

• Thepurerthesalt,thebetterthelifeandperformanceoftheelectrolyticcell.Useasaltthatisatleast99.8%pureNaCl.Thesaltisanevaporated,granulated,foodquality,non-iodizedsalt.Consultyoursaltsupplier.

• Avoidusingsaltwithanti-cakingagents(sodiumferrocyanide,alsoknownasYPSoryellowprussiateofsoda)thatcouldcausesomediscolourationoffittingsandsurfacefinishesinpool.

• Waterconditioningsaltpelletsarecompressedformsofevaporatedsaltandmaybeusedbutwilltakelongertodissolve.

• Do notusecalciumchlorideasasourceofsalt.Usesodiumchlorideonly.

• Do notuserocksaltbecauseinsolubleimpuritiesmixedwiththerocksaltcanshortenthelifeoftheunit.

4.6.3 how Much salt to use Usesalinityteststrips,aTDS/salinitymeter,oranotherreliablemethodtotestthesalinityofthepoolwater.Oncetheexistingsalinityhasbeenestablished,useTable1todeterminetheamountofsalttoaddtoreachthedesiredlevel.Beconservativewhenaddingsaltasitiseasiertoaddmoreifneededthanitistodiluteifthereistoomuchsalt.

• 4,000ppmofsaltisrecommendedforoptimumwaterconditions.

nOTE Incoolerwaterconditions(lessthan18°C[65°F]),itmaybenecessarytoaddmorethan4,500ppmofsalttokeepthe“CheckSalt”alarmfromappearingonthepowerpack.

• Lowsaltconcentrationbelow3,000ppmwillcauseprematurecellfailure.

• Highsaltconcentrationabove6,000ppmmaycausecorrosiondamagetopoolfixtures.

6. After24hours,verifycorrectsaltreadingbytestingthewatersalinitylevelusingteststrips,electronicmeter,orbyyourlocalpoolprofessional.

7. Whenthesalinityleveliscorrect,turnthepowerpackon.PresstheOUTPUTbuttontosetthedesiredproductionrate.

5.6 Polarity ReversalTheZodiacAquaPureEiSeriesAPURE35Cchlorinegeneratingdeviceisareversablepolaritycellwhichmeansthatforeveryfive(5)hoursofoperationthecellwillswitchitspolaritytohelppreventanybuildupofcalciumonthecellplates.Thisissometimesreferredtoastheautomatedcellcleaningfeature.Duringthetransitionbetweenchangingitspolaritythereisafive(5)minutewaittimewhenthecellwillnotproduceanychlorine.Onceithaschangedpolarityitwillcontinuetomakechlorine.


CAuTiOnNeverusedryacidtoadjustpHinaridgeographicareaswithexcessiveevaporationandminimaldilutionofpoolwaterwithfreshwater.Abuildupofbyproductscandamagetheelectrolyticcell.

3. Total Alkalinity Test. Testpoolwaterfortotalalkalinitywithatestkit.Takestepsnecessarytomaintainanalkalinityof100-120ppm(seeSection4.3).

4. Calcium Hardness.Testpoolwaterforcalciumhardnesslevelusingtestkitorbyhavingawatersampletestedbyapoolprofessional.Adjustasnecessarytomaintainacalciumhardnessof200-300ppm(seeSection4.3).

6.2 Monthly1. Check the cell.Itisrecommendedthatevery

monththecellberemovedandinspectedforscaleformationand/ordebris.Ifcellneedstobecleaned,seeSection6.3forinstructions.

2. Salt Level Test. Usesalinityteststrips,aTDS/salinitymeter,oranotherreliablemethodtotestthesalinityofthepoolwater.Oncetheexistingsalinityhasbeenestablished,useTable1todeterminetheamountofsalttoaddtoreachthedesiredlevel.Beconservativewhenaddingsaltasitiseasiertoaddmoreifneededthanitistodiluteifthereistoomuchsalt.IfthesalinitylevelofthepooliscorrectandthesaltLEDdoesnotgoout,seeSection7.Troubleshooting.

3. Pool Water Sample. Takewatersampletolocalpoolstorefortesting.

4. Stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid). Testpoolwaterstabilizer(cyanuricacid)levelusingatestkitorbyhavingawatersampletestedbyapoolprofessional.Maintainidealrangeof10-50ppm.Followyourpoolprofessional’srecommendations.Forindoorpools,itisnotnecessarytoaddchlorinestabilizertotheswimmingpoolwater.

5. Metals Test. Itisrecommendedthatthepoolwaterbetestedperiodicallyforthepresenceofmetalssuchasiron,andmanganese.Thesemetalsshouldnotbepresentinthepoolwater.Ifthosemetalsarepresent,contactyourlocalpoolprofessional.

section 6. Maintenance instructions

BeforeservicingtheZodiacAquaPureEiSeriesAPURE35CchlorinegeneratingdevicepleaseensureyouhavereadandunderstoodtheImportantSafetyInstructionssection.

iMPORTAnTAlwaystestthechlorinelevelsofyourpoolbeforeeachuse.

6.1 Daily1. Chlorine Test.Testpoolwaterchlorinelevel

withareliabletestkit.Checktheexpirydateofthetestkitastestresultsmaybeinaccurateifusedafterthatdate.Maintainanidealrangebyadjustingthechlorineoutputlevelonthepowerpack(seeSection5.4).Therecommendedfreechlorinelevelis1-3ppm.

nOTE Itisrecommendedthatchlorinetestsamplesbetakenfromtwo(2)places,one(1)atthepoolreturnline,theotherwellawayfromthepoolreturnline.Comparethetwo(2)samples.Ahigherlevelshouldbefoundatthepoolreturnline.Thehigherlevelatthepoolreturnlineindicatesthesystemisproducing chlorine.

2. pH Level Test.TestthepHlevelofyourpoolwithatestkit.Ifnecessary,adjusttomaintainapHlevelof7.4-7.6(seeSection4.3).


6.3 Cleaning the Cell

WARningDisconnectpowertothesystematthemaincircuitbreakerbeforeperformingthisproceduretoavoidriskofelectricshockwhichcanresultinpropertydamage,severeinjuryordeath.

Thepowerpackhasanautomaticcellcleaningfeature(polarityreversing)thatremovesscaledepositsfromthecell(seeSection5.6).

Scalewillforminexcessivelyhardwaterorfrompoolwaterthatisoutofbalanceandinascalingcondition.FollowingtheinstallationoftheZodiacAquaPureEiSeriesAPURE35Cchlorinegeneratingdevice,checkthecellonceamonthforsignsofscale.

Ifthecellhasatendencytoscale,itisrecommendedthateverymonththecellberemovedandinspectedforscaleformationand/ordebris.Somefiltersallowdebristopassthroughtothecellwhichcouldlodgebetweentheplatesinthecell.Asmallamountofscaleformationisnormal.Ifbylookingthroughthecellitisobservedthatthereisexcessivescaleformationbetweentheplatesordebrisispresent,thecellmustbecleanedasfollows:

3. Opentheairreliefvalvetoreleaseanypressureinthepoolsystem.

Fillthecelltothetopoftheelectrodeplateswiththeacidsolution.Afoamingactionwillbegin,whichiscausedbyscale(calciumcarbonate)beingdissolvedfromtheplates.Ifrigorousfoamingactiondoesnotbegin,thecelldoesnotneedtobecleaned(STOPTHECLEANINGPROCESS-gotostep10).Otherwiseallowthecelltoremaininthesolutionuntilthefoaminghasstopped(approximately5-10minutes).

10. Afterthecellhasbeencleaned,disposeofthesolutionbypouringitintothepoolwaterordisposeofaccordingtolocalregulations.

11. Rinsethecellthoroughlywithcleantapwaterandinspect.Ifdepositsarestillvisibleontheelectrolyticcell,repeatstep9.

nOTE Excessiveacidwashingwilldamagetheelectrolyticcell.Do not leave in acid for more than 30 minutes.

12. Ifthecellisclean,reattachthecellasdescribedinSection3.3.

6.4 WinterizingnOTE DonotuseEthyleneGlycol(anti-freeze)inthe

system.

Verylittlechlorineisneededincoldwater.Operatingthechlorinatorbelow11°C(51°F)isnotrecommended.Operatingthechlorinatorincoldwatercanshortenthelifeofthecell.

Ifpreventativemeasuresarenottaken,freezingwatermaycauseseveredamagetothecell.Preventfreezedamagetothecellbyrunningpumpcontinuouslyorwinterizepoolbydrainingwaterfrompump,filter,and

allintakeandreturnlines.Removethecell,cleanandstoreitindoors.Coilthecellleads,wrapinplasticandtapetothepowerpack.

Awinterizingcapisincludedwiththisproducttoreplacethecellduringwinterizingorcellmaintenance.Thiswillenablepoolpumptocirculatewaterwiththecellouttheofline.

Duringthecoldseason,ifyouareusingaFREEZECONTROLLERonpumpequipmentandyouchoosetokeepthechlorinatorinstalled,turntheCHLORINEPRODUCTIONdownto20%,otherwise,chlorineproductionwillexceedtherecommendedlevelof1-3ppm.

6.4.1 Winterizing Procedure

WARningDisconnectpowertothesystematthemaincircuitbreakerbeforeperformingthisproceduretoavoidriskofelectricshockwhichcanresultinpropertydamage,severeinjuryordeath.
