    3.6.1 Verify the Controller Type on the Power Pack is set Correctly

    BeforewiringtoanAquaLinkRSControlSystem,thecontrollertypemustbesettoJANDYL/MtoallowcommunicationbetweenthepowerpackandtheAquaLinkRSControlSystem.ThedefaultcontrollersettingonthepowerpackisJANDYL/M.Followtheinstructionsbelowtoverifythecontrollertypeissetcorrectly.

    2. Waitabout20seconds.Iftheconnectionwassuccessful,aŦ symbolwillappearinthetoprightcornerofthepowerpackdisplay.

    • Chlorine Stabilizer(cyanuricacid)isneededtomaintainproperlevelsofchlorine.Mostnon-stabilizedchlorineisdestroyedbytheUVradiationfromthesunwithintwo(2)hours.Chlorinestabilizershouldbemaintainedbetween10-50ppm.Forindoorpools,itisnotnecessarytoaddchlorinestabilizertotheswimmingpoolwater.

    • Nitratescancauseextremelyhighchlorinedemandsandwilldepletechlorinefromyourswimmingpool.Insomecasesnitratesmayevenloweryourchlorinelevelstozero.Yourlocalpoolprofessionalcantestfornitrates.Makesurenitratesarenotpresentinyourpool.

    • Metals(somemetals)cancauselossofchlorineandstainyourpool.Haveyourlocalpoolprofessionalcheckformetalsandrecommendmethodsofremoval.

    • Chloraminesshouldnotbepresentinpoolwater.Whenorganicmaterialscombinewithfreechlorine,chloraminesareformed.Thistiesupthefreechlorineinyourpoolanddoesnotallowthechlorineinyourpooltodisinfect.Chloraminesalsocloudpoolwaterandburntheeyes.Shocktoremovechloraminesattheinitialstartupofthepool.

    • Super Chlorinationburnsouttheorganicmaterialthathascombinedwithchlorinewhichfreesthechlorineforsanitizing.SuperChlorinationisaccomplishedbyraisingthechlorinelevelquicklyanddramatically.TosuperchlorinatethepoolusingtheZodiacAquaPureEiSeriesAPURE35Cchlorinegeneratingdevice,setthechlorineproductionto100%andthensetthepumpandthecelltorunfor24hours.

    • Shocking (Superoxidation)isalsoameansofburningouttheorganicmaterialthathascombinedwithchlorine.Thismethodinvolvesthemanualadditionofchemicals(usearegisteredorscheduledsourceofsodiumdichlor,calciumhypochlorite,liquidchlorineortrichlor)toquicklyraisethelevelofchlorine.Whenthechlorinelevelisquicklyraisedto5-15ppmthepoolwaterissaidtohavebeenshocked.

    nOTE Oninitialstartupofapool,itisbesttoshockusingeitherashocktreatmentoraregisteredorscheduledsourceofsodiumdichlor,calciumhypochlorite,liquidchlorineortrichloravailableatyourlocalpoolsupplier.

    CAuTiOnNeverusedryacidtoadjustpHinaridgeographicareaswithexcessiveevaporationandminimaldilutionofpoolwaterwithfreshwater.Abuildupofby-productscandamagetheelectrolyticcell.

    • The pH Conditionresultingfromtheoperationofasaltwaterchlorinationsystemisclosetoneutral.However,otherfactorsusuallycausethepHofthepoolwatertorise.Therefore,thepHinapoolchlorinatedbyasaltwatersystemtendstostabilizeatapproximately7.6.IfthepoolpHrisesabove7.6haveapoolprofessionaltesttoseeifotherfactorssuchashighcalciumhardnessortotalalkalinityarethecauseandthenbalanceaccordingly.

    • Total Dissolved Solids(TDS).AddingsalttopoolwaterwillraisetheTDSlevel.Whilethisdoesnotadverselyaffectthepoolwaterchemistryorclarity,thepoolwaterprofessionaltestingforTDSmustbemadeawaresalthasbeenaddedforthesanitizingsystem.TheindividualperformingtheTDStestwillthensubtractthesalinityleveltoarriveatthecorrectTDSlevel.

    • New pool waterinarecentlyfilledornewlyrefinishedpoolmaycontainundesirablematterwhichcouldinterferewiththesaltwaterchlorinator’sabilitytosanitizeproperly.Makesurethewateristestedbyapoolprofessionalandproperlybalancedbeforeturningonthechlorinatorsystem.Newplasterpoolshaveaconstantaciddemandforsix(6)months.TestoftenandmaintainaproperpHtoavoidexcessscalingofthecell.

    • Sequestering Agentscanbeusedtocompensateforsourcewaterwhichmayhaveunusuallyhighcalciumhardness.Highcalciumhardnesscancontributetoscaleformationinthepool.

    • Avoidusingsaltwithanti-cakingagents(sodiumferrocyanide,alsoknownasYPSoryellowprussiateofsoda)thatcouldcausesomediscolourationoffittingsandsurfacefinishesinpool.

    • Waterconditioningsaltpelletsarecompressedformsofevaporatedsaltandmaybeusedbutwilltakelongertodissolve.

    • Do notusecalciumchlorideasasourceofsalt.Usesodiumchlorideonly.

    • Do notuserocksaltbecauseinsolubleimpuritiesmixedwiththerocksaltcanshortenthelifeoftheunit.

    5. Metals Test. Itisrecommendedthatthepoolwaterbetestedperiodicallyforthepresenceofmetalssuchasiron,andmanganese.Thesemetalsshouldnotbepresentinthepoolwater.Ifthosemetalsarepresent,contactyourlocalpoolprofessional.

    Scalewillforminexcessivelyhardwaterorfrompoolwaterthatisoutofbalanceandinascalingcondition.FollowingtheinstallationoftheZodiacAquaPureEiSeriesAPURE35Cchlorinegeneratingdevice,checkthecellonceamonthforsignsofscale.

    Ifthecellhasatendencytoscale,itisrecommendedthateverymonththecellberemovedandinspectedforscaleformationand/ordebris.Somefiltersallowdebristopassthroughtothecellwhichcouldlodgebetweentheplatesinthecell.Asmallamountofscaleformationisnormal.Ifbylookingthroughthecellitisobservedthatthereisexcessivescaleformationbetweentheplatesordebrisispresent,thecellmustbecleanedasfollows:

    1. Ensurethatallpowertothepowerpackandthecontrollerisdisconnected/turnedoffatthecircuitbreaker.

    2. Beforeremovingthecellforcleaning,shutoffanynecessaryvalvestopreventanywaterloss.

    3. Opentheairreliefvalvetoreleaseanypressureinthepoolsystem.

    4. Removetheterminalcapandcellleads.

    5. Undothelockingring.Ifrequired,usethelockingringtoolprovided(seeFigure25).

    10. Afterthecellhasbeencleaned,disposeofthesolutionbypouringitintothepoolwaterordisposeofaccordingtolocalregulations.

    11. Rinsethecellthoroughlywithcleantapwaterandinspect.Ifdepositsarestillvisibleontheelectrolyticcell,repeatstep9.

    nOTE Excessiveacidwashingwilldamagetheelectrolyticcell.Do not leave in acid for more than 30 minutes.

    12. Ifthecellisclean,reattachthecellasdescribedinSection3.3.

    Verylittlechlorineisneededincoldwater.Operatingthechlorinatorbelow11°C(51°F)isnotrecommended.Operatingthechlorinatorincoldwatercanshortenthelifeofthecell.

    Ifpreventativemeasuresarenottaken,freezingwatermaycauseseveredamagetothecell.Preventfreezedamagetothecellbyrunningpumpcontinuouslyorwinterizepoolbydrainingwaterfrompump,filter,and

    allintakeandreturnlines.Removethecell,cleanandstoreitindoors.Coilthecellleads,wrapinplasticandtapetothepowerpack.

    Awinterizingcapisincludedwiththisproducttoreplacethecellduringwinterizingorcellmaintenance.Thiswillenablepoolpumptocirculatewaterwiththecellouttheofline.

    Duringthecoldseason,ifyouareusingaFREEZECONTROLLERonpumpequipmentandyouchoosetokeepthechlorinatorinstalled,turntheCHLORINEPRODUCTIONdownto20%,otherwise,chlorineproductionwillexceedtherecommendedlevelof1-3ppm.

    6.4.1 Winterizing Procedure
