Role Model Behaviour

In the age of information, we know more about the lives of other people than ever before. We can connect at the touch of a button and; through Instagram, Twitter and Facebook; be just one or two clicks away from getting an in-depth look into the lives of those we look up to. With this instant access into the private lives of others, it’s important to consider exactly what posts we like – and ultimately, who we look up to. Today, the examples set by our role models are more crucial than ever as the press publicises their every move. With such an overload of celebrity gossip and scandal in the media, we all have to learn to recognise the true leaders among the masses. When we think about all the people we respect most in the world, the first leaders we think of are those at the top of their game. But a true role model is someone who shines in more than just one aspect of life – such as the work they do behind the spotlight, off the field or outside of their known profession or industry. Psychologist Dr Marilyn Price-Mitchell explains that a role model is defined by five characteristics: their set of values, ability to inspire, unfailing commitment to the community, complete sense of selflessness and ability to overcome the obstacles that life presents them. It’s these traits that help to separate truly inspirational leaders from their famous counterparts. Look at these people who continue to inspire us and who truly embody these five important traits. Themba Bavuma The SA Proteas newcomer played cricket for Gauteng before he earned his green and gold blazer and a spot on the national team. Growing up surrounded by poverty in a poor community in Langa, Bavuma did not have an easy start in life. He now holds the record for being the first black African to have ever scored a century in test cricket. His outstanding performance, both on and off the pitch, continues to inspire young cricketers across the country as he proves that nothing is impossible once you set your mind to it. Mark Zuckerberg In December 2015, the successful founder of Facebook announced that during his lifetime he will donate 99% of his company shares – an amount close to $45 billion – to help develop personalised learning as well as cure diseases around the world. The decision forms part of a

global initiative called Giving Pledge, which has also been signed by Bill Gates, and shows that Zuckerberg is a good role model when it comes to philanthropy. Christian Ronaldo While many people see soccer as a sport that revolves around money and faking injuries on the field, this Real Madrid player has to be one of the best and fittest athletes in the world. Apart from his prowess on the pitch, Ronaldo has done charity work in Gaza, helped build wings for new hospitals and he has even privately funded the treatment of a number of cancer patients. From his humble beginnings as the son of a gardener in Portugal, he is now among the most charitable athletes in the world. Glossary: ‘prowess’ (par 7): great skill or ability. SECTION B: SUMMARY QUESTION 2 You have recently read an article on how to manage your time better. You would like to share this information with your friends. Read the extract (TEXT C) below and write a list of SEVEN ways to manage time. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Your summary must be written in point form. 2. List SEVEN points in full sentences using NO MORE than 70 words. 3. Number your sentences from 1 to 7. 4. Write ONE point per sentence. 5. Use your own words as far as possible. 6. Indicate the number of words you have used in brackets at the end of your summary. TEXT C

You need to understand your own unique rhythms. We all have times of day when we’re able to be more productive than others. Identify the time you are most productive. High levels of stress (internal or external) are not helpful when it comes to managing time effectively. Internal stress is self-imposed (“I need to get straight As!”). If you put a lot of internal pressure on yourself, consider what is important (and what’s not). External stress is can be deadlines. If you feel too much external stress, change the situation by starting assignments earlier or dropping extracurricular activities. If there’s a big Math test on Monday morning, but your friends are all going to the movies on Sunday night. What do you do? Think about your priorities. If you study before the movie, you’ll be ready for the test. Being late for activities or not completing homework on time, are all signs of poor time management skills. Use some tools like alerts on your phone or a calendar to schedule projects. Maybe you are not paying attention to time and are always running behind. A phone timer or a watch can help you to always stay aware of the time. While technology has a lot of upsides and downsides, technological devices are highly distracting. Find ways to control the distractions. Focus on how long tasks take, how to plan your schedule using strategies like blocking out time to complete certain tasks. Set goals for the day and think how you will complete each goal. https://yourteenmag.com/teenager-school/teens-high-school/time-management-for-teens

QUESTION 5: LANGUAGE STRUCTURES AND CONVENTIONS 5.1 Read the passage (TEXT F) below which has some deliberate errors and answer the questions that follow. TEXT F

Everybody needs friends. Relationships has inspired novels, poetry, films, songs and television more than any other subject. This is because they involve strong feelings and are central to human being’s lives, and underpin society. People of all ages spend hours talking and thinking why they and others behave the way they do around each other. Take time one day to listen to what other people around you are talking about, weather it is on your way to school, in your home or among your friends. What proportion of the conversation is about relationships? When we are with people whose company we enjoy and who think the same way as we do, we feel comfortable and relaxed. We feel as though we belong. We also feel good about ourselves. We are able to talk, to let off steam, to share secrets or just to chat about the things that are important to us. Sometimes we might even just talk to fill the silence. The important thing is that we are communicating and sharing. Being a teenager you probably feel as though the people of your own age are the only ones that really understand you. But you can make friends with people of all ages.
